Just thought I'd chime in on this emo thing.

It's pretty evident to me that he's a fan of it, since that Boxcar Racer side-project as basically an homage to Dischord-era "real emo" / post-hardcore.

I can only imagine he was referring to what's passed for emo since the early 00s, which has been a pretty gross, slick pop punk / watered down hardcore / power pop / modern rock fusion.
Which is a bit ironic to me since I feel that's been his own output for the last decade or so, but whatever.

Im not a *huge* fan of Blink, but ive listened to enough of their stuff through the years to be atleast a little bummed about the news. It always sucks to see bands you like break up, regardless of who's fault it is. Especially one that seems to have been a big part of peoples youth's. Hopefully they can work it out at some point.

Oh well. To Spotify!

They can't he owns part of the band and rights to songs. He could block them from using the material if he wanted to. They are probably trying to use this to get him to either sale his share or sign a contract letting them do what they want and designating his share of the revenue.

Hopefully, they need to use the emails where he previously agreed to recording at this time (thereby booking studio time, not cheap) and say you come record with us now, or we will let you out of the agreement you made if you release your rights. He'll still get royalties, I'm sure, but he has to release them to move forward without him if he doesn't want to be part of it.

Good riddance. A Skiba/Barker/Hoppus project would be fucking nuts. I want that to happen so badly.

I completely agree. I'd much rather this happen than them work things out with Tom.

Blink-182 was my favorite band in middle school. I learned all their songs while learning how to play guitar. I didn't really listen to them after Enema, but I will always have a soft spot for their first 3 albums. I'm sad to hear Tom is being pain in the ass to work with (again). I never got to see them live :(

Also, I had this patch on my backpack in 8th grade:

Damn I remember listening to that Motion City Soundtrack album back in the day, maybe 8-10 years ago? I don't remember it anymore, time to load it up on Spotify if it has it.

I love Tom's sound in AvA, too bad he seems to be a dick..

I personally love AVA, but this sucks for DeLonge Blink fans.

He seems like he might be ... difficult, I guess, to work with.

Refusing to record in person, having to email your bandmates back and forth your recordings. Refusing to listen to the masters/mixings of the complete songs (ie. the other musicians contributions that weren't his). Only talking over email. Only talking to bandmates through your manager.

Yeah, I would say difficult to work with sums that up. This guy basically wasn't even in the band. He's a fuckin asshole.

Now I'm kinda excited to see what 3 fully dedicated band members for blink 182 sound like and not 1/3 holding the rest back.

He comes into the restaurant I work at frequently with his family. Probably just putting that (family) above his work, maybe not. His wife has a business he works with I believe as well. Regardless he has always been nice whenever I talked to him, never had a huge ego, but then again, I'm serving him food so it's not like I'm having a full conversation with him or anything.

tom's publicly spoke about how that was a mistake. they recorded dogs eating dogs together and spoke about how much more fun it was.

i dunno, tom's obviously at fault if even half of what has been claimed is true, but like most things in life i think the reality is a lot more complex than him simply being the outright villain. he doesn't seem very good at vocally communicating his feelings, and there's obviously a lot of shit that they've still never resolved as a band.

i remember in the angels & airwaves documentary when tom gave his side of why blink ended, the non stop touring and how he never saw his wife and newborn child. then you have mark saying his communication was fucked up, etc. then you have tom's painkiller addiction and all that stuff. i think they were both being sincere but at the same time unreliable and the truth was pretty clearly somewhere in between.

Rest

All these years later I still chuckle at what a fucking moron that guy is.
Don't ask me, I didn't put the words in his mouth. I thought it was weird too because, as I said, recent emo was strongly influenced by his band, and his style in particular. What exceptions there are, or if he's backpedaled, aren't things I can tell you about.

Yeah I think this is a good thing, I mean one album since 2009 is just pathetic when they said the it would come out in 2013. at least now I know not to blame all 3. not to mention neighbourhoods although I thought it was decent was more AVA with mark and travis than real blink

I didn't know that about Dog Eating Dogs. Actually thought the EP had songs that sounded better then their reunion LP. For shame.

Still, I don't get how he could make his bandmates go through his manager. What kind of shit is that? No matter who is to blame, Tom's actions in the past was inexcusable. And it seems that what he's doing again is the same thing. Not showing up for recordings? Only talking through emails? Bandmates can ONLY reach him through a manager?

That is pretty fuckin awful. These are his "friends" his bandmates. Ridiculous.

yeah it's certainly inexcusable behaviour, no doubt

it's just a shame because they clearly have so much musical chemistry together : (

Every time I think about how childish marks singing is I remember delonge is in the band and somehow much much worse. Why does delonge song in a weird fake accent? It's like he's channeling his inner toddler. Also every other nu-emo band copied his weird manchild accent. I cannot tell a lie though, somehow that shit just makes sense when you're 16 and hang out with a friend group that is overwhelmingly white.

Do you think Chris carabba will make a comeback? What about Reel Big Fish? I can't wait to hear what saddle creek puts out next! The New Thursday album rules. Pennywise is real punk. Fuck emo kids pop-punk 4 ever. Alien antfarm is a reference to aliens watching or controlling humanity! Whitney Houston is my 3rd fave female artist. Have you heard of the band Less Than Jake? AFI used to be good. Let's go skateboard for some reason!

I mean, I agree that there is probably more to the story. Maybe Mark and Travis never let go of their resentment? Maybe they never could fully bury the hatchet? So it was this thing that kept spiraling out of control?

I dunno. It's just strange to me though that Tom is doing this (the hiding behind the manager shit). AND...I still think the fact that, he was only willing to correspond over emails for their reunion LP is pretty fuckin amazing (in a bad way). Like...why even re-join a band if you can't even be bothered to record.

So yeah. Maybe this isn't 100% his fault. But there is just so many things that boggle your mind by Tom's actions.

EDIT: Damn, listening to "Dog's Eating Dog's" :*(

That song gave me hope that their next record would be better. Love that song. Tom's vocals actually mix with the music (unlike Neighborhoods which felt more like his solo work).

I saw Angels and Airwaves open for Weezer once. Was weird seeing Tom prance around the stage trying to be like Bono with his beer gut hanging out. :p

I like some of Angels stuff, but I always thought the concept behind the band and the kind of image Tom wanted to make for himself, was so ridiculous.

Never liked angels. I did like that on song they put in rock band though. It was fun

Tom is such an asshole. The new AVA album is pretty good, though. So, if he wants to do more of that shit, more power to him.

Pretty much this. Tom's clearly a pain to work with- witness the post Love part two departure of members from AVA.

But AVA's peaks are way higher than Blink's, and the new album is quite good. So I don't really have a problem with him solely focusing on AVA.

I love Blink, but ever since they got back together, it felt like the direction they wanted to go in was strained. Stick with the early 2000s stuff that feels dated now, or move in a more modern/AVA direction. Neighborhoods felt like the latter, but since they didn't commit fully to that direction, it felt flat to me.

RIP Blink with Tom. Hopefully the new guy is decent.

They're going to have a tough time filling the shoes of a shitty guitarist with a horrible voice.

Tom has a charm (the way mediocre musicians can make by forcing their way). But yeah, it's funny that Tom puts himself on this pedestal of being this incredible artist and gift to music. Honestly, I just wish the guy would allow the band to move forward if he doesn't want to be apart of it.

It seems like the bandmates don't even care at this point, like if he really doesn't want to be in the band okay. They support him. But just stop dicking them around. Tom sounds like a flaky friend you knew in middleschool. Or that moody partner you once dated, that flips back and forth and can't make up their damn mind.

They probably just want some resolution.

Reading that Mark flew all the way back to Los Angeles from London on a whim because Tom wanted to do a Christmas EP...just speaks volumes. They would do anything for Tom. But it seems like Tom basically does what he wants, and doesn't give back. Doesn't give a shit about them or what they want.

Reel Big Fish and Less Than Jake are on tour together right now. I'm going to see them in New Orleans next Friday. Should be a decent show.

MCM to me, were always more a bombastic theatrical band, and not emo. They took a lot influence from Bowie and Queen. Which was evident from the Black Parade (which was more of a classic rock album). I actually love MCM (I know not everyone likes them). But I really like them.

But yeah, Emo is like any genre. Starts off as something, then gets really big in the mainstream. Reminds me of dubstep, and how a lot of people viewed dubstep as Wub Wub Wub (or how major artists would use those break down). But there were a lot more intricacies to the music, and the scene. Same with Emo.

I remember being in higschool, and Emo blowing up as a popular thing. That said, I'm not trying to be all hipster and saying REAL Emo is not popular. Just that, a lot of the more popular bands that were labeled as Emo, had IMO different musical style/stucture than what actual Emo was. Like all genres, I think it evolves into an image or style, rather than the actual technical aspects of the music, that originally made it that label.

For sure. It's weird to think of Burial as dubstep with all the recent changes.

Anyway, Tom was always my least favorite member. I enjoyed them for a few years and it was nice to finally have music to talk to my friends about, but it's rough for sincere listens these days.

I could see him leaving again, but doing it through your manager? That's cold.

TAJ

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
I only heard the first single from their last album, but Tom's vocals on that were close to the worst I've heard on a professional recording.

There should be a real (for lack of a better term) emo thread

I want somewhere to freak out about Mineral, Knapsack and The Hotelier playing Groezrock this year

Man, I would love to see Mineral and Knapsack.

I've seen Jealous Sound probably 15 times, they used to open for EVERYONE. I once saw them on the bottom floor of Blondies, a pizza shop in SF. Most of the "audience" was just there to eat pizza haha, they looked completely confused.

Tom just posted this to Facebook.

LETTER TO THE FANS
Where to begin?
The truth is always a good place. Let’s go there.
I love Blink and am incredibly grateful for having it in my life. It has given me everything. EVERYTHING. I started this band, it was in my garage where I dreamed up the mischief.
So what have I been doing behind the scenes? Well, I’ve tried to make things work. I’ve tried to help move this band down 50 different paths using my people, or other people, and people we don’t even know. I tried to put forth ideas about how we can grow and challenge ourselves to become a better band. I’m not sitting around waiting for someone else to do the work. I’m not wired that way.
The big reset was when I tried to put together a band summit in Utah where we’d talk and work things out. It quickly was narrowed down to three hours in someone’s dressing room in a shitty casino. What I hoped would be a positive get-together away from everything turned into an awkward meeting in a smelly convention hall dressing room. But it was there that I told Mark and Travis that as long as we talked, and things were good between us as real friends, that I would be engaged and work passionately. I'd mirror our personal relationship. Exact words.
Then, the EP was the test. Months later, we’re recording those songs. I was in the studio for two months and they came in for around 11 days. I didn’t mind leading the charge, but we had all agreed to give it 100%. And this time- no baggage.
Despite that, we still somehow managed to self-sabotage.
At one point, squabbling and politics forced me to pull the EP down at a time when 60,000 fans were trying to purchase it. And that blew my mind. I’d been trying so hard but that moment ultimately broke my spirit. I then realized that this band couldn't lose the years of ill will.
It was after that episode that I promised myself I would never be in that position again – to rely on the words we said to each other.
I remember asking one of them on the phone, “did you try your best? Like we all agreed to?” He was silent.
Are they at fault?
Am I? Of course. I'm nuts.
But there’s three of us – we’re all accountable. At the end of the day, we’ve always been dysfunctional, which is why we haven’t talked in months. But we never did. In the 8 years we have been together it has always been that way.
Over the past two and a half years, while a recording partner was being sought for a new Blink record, I launched a media company. I just put out a new Angels & Airwaves record and as some of you know, there’s a lot more coming – comics, books, a film, etc. The books will all come with music. This is a wheel that’s already in motion. So you can imagine my frustration when I was handed a 60-page Blink contract saying I couldn’t release an Angels album for 9 months and that the Blink album had to be recorded in 6 months, which was impossible for me. Doing so would force me to breach several artist contracts. Authors, Concept Artists, Animators... Many people.
They did eventually drop the Angels provision, but the part about having to finish a Blink album in 6 months remained. All of these other projects are being worked, exist in contract form– I can’t just slam the brakes and drop years of development, partnerships and commitments at the snap of a finger.
I told my manager that I will do Blink 182 as long as it was fun and worked with the other commitments in my life, including my family.
But Mark and Travis know all of this.
I wrote this same letter to them a year ago. But it created a massive argument, the biggest one yet actually. I just wanted us to do things we all agreed on. But that was their moment to dig in. From their view I was controlling everything. In reality, I was scared to put myself out there again. To repeat the EP experience.
I also wrote all of this to their managers this past December (who told me my bandmates weren’t angry and agreed with some of my ideas of how to grow the band).
So you can imagine my surprise when a press release went out yesterday—without my knowledge—about the band’s future. This is new to me. It’s not in my nature to fuel negativity about the legacy of the band on something as trashy as the Internet world.
But I guess that’s another example of how I differ from most. I follow the light... I follow passion and I make art. I hang with my son, my daughter and my wife.
At the end of the day, all of this makes me really sad.
Sad for us.
Sad for you- that you’re witnessing this immaturity.
I know them very well, and their current actions are defensive and divisive.
I suppose they’re doing this as a way to protect themselves from being hurt.
Like we all do.
And even as I watch them act so different to what I know of them to be, I still care deeply for them. Like brothers, and like old friends. But our relationship got poisoned yesterday.
Never planned on quitting, just find it hard as hell to commit.

I don't know what to believe, I don't even listen to much Blink-182 or any of the later projects much nowadays, but it's sad to see the band I used to listen to growing up blow apart, again.

I'm not as sad as I was a decade ago though.

Bummed that it had to end like this. They are one of my top ten favorite bands of all time for sure. Dude Ranch, Enema of the State, TOYPAJ, and the self-titled album are all fantastic. Box Car Racer album is great, too.

I hope Mark and Travis do some +44 stuff again. A new album would be dope.

Edit: Even after reading Tom's newest letter on Facebook, I feel like I'm still believing more of the Mark and Travis side. Tom has wanted to do his own thing since Box Car Racer. Everyone knows that. The self-titled album was their swan song, and that's okay I think.

Still wish I could have seen them in concert, though.

Holy God Tom. Been brainstorming the last day or so haven't ya?

And yeah, it doesn't look good, seems neither party likes nor trusts each other anymore. There's not a whole lot that you can do to make up with that, there will always be that resentment.

Well this turned out to be a wild story. Dysfunctional is the perfect word. All of this talk of random contracts, emailing managers, etc., it's like a good soap opera.

I like Blink's music for the most part, and was actually a fan of Neighborhoods and Dogs Eating Dogs. Oddly enough my dad got super into them and Angels recently and wanted to see them live but looks like that might not happen at this rate.
