I have been trying to research treadmills and wanting to stay at around $1500 or so.. I want something that is good and will be reliable and last a few years. I am pretty overweight (over 300lbs) so it will have to be something that can hold up and eventually I would like to get into jogging/running on it when I am able to.

I tried looking at the used market, but everything in my area is just nordictrack/proform/weslo crap, and while it is cheap, I don't want to have to go through the hassle of having to dispose/replace it in less than a year. I would rather just spend the money now to get something that I will be able to use for a long time. I have also looked at some of the more specialty brands like True and Precor but they are way out of my price range. Everything I read about Icon Fitness (nordictrack/proform) is making me want to stay away from them.

The Yowza Daytona looks like it would be a perfect solution for me. There have been some good things to say about Yowza but internet reviews these days are so unreliable because I don't know if they are paid reviews and if they have even tried out the machine. The Daytona hits everything I would want from a treadmill and is even under $1500 using a 5% coupon (5%yowza) and includes a fitbit which would be really nice to have.

Not sure what options are available locally to you OP, but where I live there's a business that takes 2nd hand treadmills from the gyms, hotels, etc (the really good high end ones) and completely refurbishes them, and sells them- probably for around your price point, with full warranty, etc. IF that option is available I would look into it first. I got a NordicTrak for like $800 (marked down from $1500) like 5 years ago, and while it still works, it's a piece of crap. I'd much rather get a professional one, even if it's a refurb,

I'm asking because if the answer is "I want to lose weight" well, the treadmill is going to be useless then.

Well some of it is too lose weight, but I also want to be able to get to a state of walking around with friends/family and not get winded during vacations. I use to run some back in high school and enjoyed it when I was in shape, I got injured a few years back and fell off the wagon and haven't been able to get back up again. I don't have much of a neighborhood where I live so I don't have a good place to walk, and don't want to have to drive to a part everyday so I can walk 20-30 minutes.

Plus my wife is wanting a good treadmill, so there is that.

I'm asking legitimately here, as you very well might know more about fitness than I do, but what makes you say that? From what I've understood for someone at 300 lbs just starting exercise routine, you would want to start with low-intensity workouts such as walking for 20-30 minutes a day.

Unless you just meant that as a snarky comment to point out that like 75% of the people who buy treadmills stop using them regularly after the novelty purchase period ends, in which case, yeah, that's probably a fair point.

Undoubtedly it's the latter.

Not to derail, but I'm in the market for a stationary bike. Any recommendations?

Has anyone tried the Peloton?

These ones looks like you would go "Yowza!"

In terms of calories, exercising burns very little. A 300 lb man burns about 150 calories per mile, possibly more depending on speed. It's far easier to just operate off a 150 calorie deficit. Not saying don't exercise, but if you want to lose weight, most of it will be done in the kitchen.

I'd recommend joining a gym and using their treadmills. You'll get access to far more equipment with a less up-front cost.

You probably thought about this a lot so maybe this isn't helpful, buuuutttt would you ever just consider going to a gym? For like $20/month you get way better equipment and you can upgrade to other things when you eventually (and you will) get sick of a treadmill. Also being at a gym is pretty good from a motivational standpoint in my experience.

Edit: I also love row machines. Get a helluva better workout.

This is what I'm saying...

I have thought about it but a one time expense for a treadmill and a bench with some free weights is a lot better long term, especially for the two of us. Other thing is just the time. I can finish with my treadmill workout in the time it would take me to drive to a gym and back.

I know losing weight is like 90% diet/10% exercise. I was wanting to get into some cardio because I hate dreading things that should be fun. For instance, we went on a cruise a few months ago with some friends and they wanted to do an excursion that involved a lot of walking. They all had fun and some got tired, but after 20 minutes of walking I was hating every second of it and kept thinking about the next time we stopped so I could sit down and take a small break. I moved into an office job seven years ago and that took a huge toll on my health. I was just thinking a good treadmill would help with that.

If you are on the heavy side. Maybe you should look at an elliptical machine? They are easier on the joints than a treadmill.

Why not try going outside to walk/run?

If you walk/run at home, you are more likely to get distracted. If you are outside and away from technology and other things, you can stay focused on exercising.

I had a treadmill once and hated it. I wouls rather (and I do) run in 0 degree weather than run on a treadmill.

One thing I'd suggest is considering a treadmill with iFit support. It makes it so you can have an external display show the Google Street View as you progress. Makes the walk/run a lot less boring as you get to see various locations.

The iFit was really appealing to me, but that is only supported under the Icon Fitness brand of equipment (Nordictrack/Proform), and the feedback I have read about them have not been good, at all. Plus iFit is $12/month.. which I wouldn't mind paying, I just don't think that their workout equipment will last that long.

Gyms have benefits beyond that. For starters, it's a dedicated space to working out. You get there, you enter a "workout" mindset. Your mind isn't drifting towards laundry or TV, it's focused on sweat. Pools and pools of glorious sweat. If you have a dedicated room in your house for fitness, go ahead. If it's doubling as your garage or laundry room....

Also, going to a gym or walking outside will allow you and the wife to workout at the same time. May seem obvious, but with one treadmill and two people to use it, you won't save as much time vs going to a gym.

Good points. We have a weird 10x10 room right off the living room with a door and fully closed off that I plan on putting the treadmill and a bench and some free weights into. We have thought a lot about it and spent a few months talking about it and if we would be able to hold eachother accountable, etc. So we are pretty dead set on a treadmill at home, I was just wanting to know if anyone has used a Yowza machine and if they had any feedback.
