According to magazine leaks, Judas Code is a F2P Gun Action RPG tri-Ace is developing for the PS Vita. It'll be out this Summer in Japan, and the base game is free, while there will be item microtransactions.

The game is set in the future after a mysterious pillar from space known as Longinus destroys the landscape on Earth during World War 3. In the post-apocalyptic setting, a new humanity fights for survival in this "dramatic warfare RPG".

Players can take on various missions in the cities and progress in the story. Completing missions will also net rewards like random card drops. Building a deck with the cards will determine the player's battle strength. It seems that when the game is played solo, the gameplay is gun action, but in multiplayer it becomes a card battle game or something.

Update 1:
A bit more info has shown up:

- The main character designer is Ryo Nagi
- There will be various different known artists contributing for the card illustrations
- Kana Hanazawa and Yui Horie will be voicing NPC characters
- The main quest missions are single player Gun Action missions
- The multiplayer mode Battleline is an asynchronous mode where players form teams with each other to defeat enemies

Update 2:
First pics from Famitsu.

This is what I expected it to look like:

Surprisingly, this is also what it looks like:

Looks way better than I expected honestly. Not really enthused by the "MP" on the mission map screen, especially with a triangle button prompt to "recover MP". That reeks of a stamina system with microtransaction refills to me. Especially when there's a countdown timer for "refill". Lol. The description in the article mentions a mission type where you have to "Get [x] headshots", so that's really starting to sound like grindy sort of F2P design.

The cards seem to act as equipment/skills of sorts. There's Weapon, Shield, Skill, and Bonus types shown in the screen. If all the equipment and skill stuff are all going to be cards, then that's definitely where they're going to monetize the game the most - with drops and random rewards.

The article also describes the gun action gameplay as having "simple controls", and it confirms that single player story missions are gun action missions, and using the reward from the missions you can strengthen your cards, and the multiplayer mode uses the cards you have collected and powered up for card battles.

Just from reading your post I'm picturing a mix of EoE and that phantasy star card battle game for the GC.

Sounds interesting I guess

So they decided to release the shitty version of Phantasy Star Nova, they had to revamp, as a F2P title ? Just kidding but i wouldnt be too shocked if they would implement stuff they had to cut from Sega PSN project. Gotta pay those bills somehow.

Seems interesting, but let's hope their f2p model is well designed and not gamebreaking

It's probably the card drops. You can presumably buy tickets to get more chances to get rare cards or whatever. That seems to be the main itemization in the game. I guess we can wait for screens to see if the game is even worth paying attention to though.

The switch up between solo gun action and multiplayer card battle sounds like triace wanted to do some of their usual action rpg stuff but still had to earn money, so they married two games into one weird beast.

Or are the cards more like the gun parts in Resonance of Fate?

I can only feel that Tri-Ace is slowly heading to his own grave....

This sounds pretty similar to the direction more indepth social games are heading, which is an easier market to get funds for (even if they're angel investors).

What's perhaps the most surprising is this is on Vita instead of Vita and mobile, but they might have gotten Sony to throw in some funds to cover their risk.

Even the multiplayer is designed in a way that allows you to always find opponents due to them being autobattles, which is really common in social phone games, as PvP and co-op are popular, but people often aren't looking at the specific app enough to do realtime.

This is what I was thinking, F2P market is not easy even on mobile and yet only on Vita, dosn't sound like a very smart move...

Need to see some gameplay before I get excited at all. I'm still confused whether or not this a card battle game or an action one or both.

We'll have to wait for there to be actual screens and video to know how involved a game it really is, but another thing to keep in mind is that Capcom initially also announced Dragon's Dogma Quest as a Vita exclusive title, only to end up releasing it on mobile first. Lol.

Oh how the mighty have fallen. At least they're working on PSNova.

Exclusivity deals have gotten really silly.

Eh, it sounds interesting but I'll have to wait and see some footage as it kind of sounds confusing. If they're self publishing, then I doubt it'll come to NA anyway.

At least it's for a dedicated handh-

Abandon all hope ye who enter here

One of the great system designers when it comes to JRPG (which is why given the additional info, I'm not that worried about the game being P2W).
I'm playing RoF right now and hoo boy, it's the poster child for needlessly convoluted mechanics. I have to roll my eyes when folks say it's stagnation in RPG battle systems that's dulled their appeal, it's exactly the opposite. Everyone's trying to reinvent the wheel, shoving in half a dozen gauges and subsystems to keep track of instead of keeping it simple.
