Trump adviser: Trump open to Social Security and Medicare cuts.

Donald Trump’s presidential campaign waffled again on the details of its economic policy, with a top adviser suggesting a Trump administration would be open to reductions in Medicare and Social Security spending if the campaign’s tax cuts don’t achieve extraordinary budget surpluses.

To date, Mr. Trump has stood by his promise to leave untouched the entitlement benefits that older Americans receive, while proposing an unprecedentedly large tax cut. Outside analysts have concluded that combination would worsen the country’s long-term fiscal position.

The campaign in recent days has muddled but not reversed those positions, with the candidate or his top aides suggesting they were open to paring back his proposed tax cuts or, on Wednesday, potentially trimming entitlement benefits.

“After the administration has been in place, then we will start to take a look at all of the programs, including entitlement programs like Social Security and Medicare,” said chief Trump policy adviser Sam Clovis, during an event in Washington. “We’ll start taking a hard look at those to start seeing what we can do in a bipartisan way.”

Note that the probability of Trump achieving a budget surplus is zero considering that he wants massive tax cuts.

So Trump may want to cut Social Security and Medicare benefits.

So economically left!

Meeting with Ryan went well I see

Also:

Literally laughed out loud.

"if the campaign’s tax cuts don’t achieve extraordinary budget surpluses"

When have they ever. And the last thing we want are budget surpluses, extraordinary or otherwise.

Won't surprise me if by tomorrow he comes out in favor of gay marriage equality. Dude is a hot mess. He never stays on track, not even for a day. He is constantly changing his views.

I thought republicans didnt dare touch those programs because they need the elderly vote?
A lot of elderly folk will still vote GOP anyway, usually because proposed "reforms" (gutting) of SS/Medicare/etc are usually intended to be grandfathered in and because it's more important to be racist. But yeah, you don't want to ruffle their feathers too much, Democrats' huge win in 2006 was in large part due to Bush's failed attempt to privatize Social Security.

I'd be fine with Social Security cuts, as I prefer a Chilean type retirement system, but cutting Medicare would probably be a bad idea. Unless negotiating drug prices counts as a cut.

Trump is "open" to everything, because he doesn't believe in anything or have any real policies. He equivocates and tries to appear concilliatory on everything.

remember me
Lol this is stupid even for him. Only establishment talking heads and very serious people in think tanks want cuts.

They do what Paul Ryan did in 2012 and say that the cuts won't affect anyone over N age (usually around 55).

It's quite disgusting, basically pander to old people by cutting stuff that won't affect them.

I wouldn't necessarily say in large part, in 06 I think was driven by weariness over the Iraq war, Katrina, and the cluelessness of the GOP majority (Mark Foley, etc.). But yea, it was a big defeat as that was Bush's major domestic policy initiative 2nd term.

Kinda sums up most of trump's policies lol

Honestly wouldn't surprise me at this point if his entire run was just a way to revive Trump-brand steak to sell to suckers who believe what he spews out of his... whatever.

Seriously, why are they giving Trump the time of day? Did they hate Obama that much? Is this some sort of pay back or something? I really don't get it.

Nothing wrong with the laffer curve.

The problem is the belief held by policymakers that no matter what the tax rate is that we're always on the right side of the curve.
No, it's basic been entirely disproven by modern economics. Laffer still goes around advising politicians on what the entire economics community understands is a falsehood. He's knowing peddling a crock of shit to gullible right wing lawmakers.

Meanwhile, every single advisor and manager on his team are lifelong republicans. So we shouldn't be surprised if every actual policy position his campaign puts out ends up being very republican in nature.

It's like a more extreme version of what we saw with W. Bush, minus the coaching to get Trump on the same page.

When Trump decided to join the race, I thought there would be some real potential for things to get interesting. I don't mean the obvious clownish antics, but rather the fact that he actually came out initially saying that he was against cuts to entitlements and open to tax hikes on the rich. So you'd have a candidate that's got the appeals to racism, but also decides to defend the idea of a welfare state. That's pretty unique for American politics!

But no, that was a short lived dream as Trump went back to supporting the same shitty supply-side policies that ever Republican politician has supported for decades.

Trump and Hilary will start moving towards the center all the way until November.

Cutting entitlements is more center than his previous stances ... wat?

I thought republicans didnt dare touch those programs because they need the elderly vote?

At least last election, Paul Ryan suggested delaying the entitlement cuts until after the old people died and sticking the younger boomers with older retirement age and medicare vouchers.

The lawmakers aren't the gullible ones.

The most remarkable thing about all this is how much he's not willing to commit to anything and might just flip flop.
His supporters will call it "looking for the best deal" while the rest of the world will just see he's completely out of his depth, sleep deprived, and surrounded by mediocre advisors.
No shit he spends so much time and energy on buffoonery, you wouldn't want anyone looking for an actual political platform.

I don't mean to alarm you but you have dogs on your face
Trump says what he means and means what he says. Cutting Medicare and SS would be terrific, the best cuts.

This would piss off my mom, who is a rabid Trump supporter. Unfortunately she believes that literally everything on the internet is fake.

The funny thing is he has to flip flop away from the center thanks to him alienating a lot of the right while having very little space to make it up on the left.

These entitlements yeah. Current healthcare coverage is subpar because the elderly receive Medicare and social security so they oppose any improvements for the rest of us because they already have it good. Meanwhile us pay into these entitlements and benefit not one dime off it. Go Trump, tbh
