Trump on ban: "It's working out very nicely."

I feel sorry for you guys over the pond, you've got 4 years of this shit to put up with.

Well, at least your mistake is reversible.
If it is, it might take a decade or two. The damage done in 4 years by the Republicans and Trump will be immense. Just look at week 1 for an example.

Not for a very long time unless our elected representatives keep the Supreme Court at 4+4 and RBG manages to stay alive at least for a few more years.

Makes you think how badly the boomer generation has completely fucked everything up.

Undoubtedly. They are to blame for the majority of problems today. And sure, some of them are Democrats! Or perhaps just reasonable and rational Republicans -- far removed from the worst offenders -- but I think we shouldn't go eye for an eye, quite yet.

There will be a time. It is not now.

Err....how is Obama responsible? He went above and beyond for her.

Obama did everything he could to put Hillary in the white house but they still managed to fumble the ball. Hillary and her team are 100% responsible for her defeat. Too many people on Gaf refuse to accept that.

Obama has been POTUS for 8 years. He's accountable too because his public policies, or the absence of them, lead to situations that prevented people from voting (for Clinton) or even turned them into Trump voters.

There are multiple reasons of course, and this is one of them.

Blaming anyone at this point is stupid when that energy could be directed towards strengthening the Democratic Party's bid for 18/20. But this is, in fact, a representative democracy and that the electorate ultimately gave power to Donald Trump is a factual observation. Americans collectively fucked up, including but not limited to HRC.

If you don't draw up an inventory of what the Democrats fucked up you'll lose for sure one for time. Sanders, who was (is) seen as a radical, tried to start it but since Obama is glorified (see the 2 first posts that I quoted) it's impossible. I remember telling you the same things 1 year ago and you (not you personnaly) didn't listen.

That kind of blindness is killing some center-left parties in Europe, it will kill you too.

.

What's the other? Between Torture, NATO, the wall, TPP, the BBC journalist, and general Trump stupidity, the foriegn press has had as hard of a time covering Trump as domesitic media has.

Honestly, the only thing holding our reputation together is the Womens March and these airport protests. The world is paying attention to those too, and it's been great PR for America.

I was referring to the wall. People in his cabinet have at least come out in support of NATO and against torture, making him back off. With the wall though, he signed an EO, got told "lol, no," had a foreign head of state cancel a visit, and then a spokesman talked up 20% tariff on Mexican goods before being told how terrible of a idea that is, and is currently in limbo with the solution right now being that we (the US tax payers) having to pay for it.

Hmmmm, amidst all the chaos, he is doing something in the background. They are keeping us busy, to make decisions that we would oppose, but we are preoccupied with this issue.

Divide and conquer? Appointing people to certain positions? Making deals?

If anything, democrats were more honest with their actions and campaign promices. The only strategy for the future you can get by looking into the past is: "How can we trick these idiots into voting for us". Trump is a president because this country deserves an idiot for a president.

Trump can't keep up the veneer of populism when he has people like actual-vampire Peter Thiel and Steve Mnuchin on his side. That's the problem of GOP appeals to the common man overall, when you work with people who's only interaction with the commoners is "those people i can sorta see through my tinted limo windows."

Hence why Bannon's trying to run a Nationalist game instead, trying to create a self-imposed crisis of America vs the World and use that as a wedge. They aren't being nearly subtle enough about it, is the problem. You need to do things that look reasonable on the surface but are designed to generate an overreaction from the opposition to discredit them, a midnight, unpublished Executive Order designed to exclude people who were previously judged to be here legally isn't a reasonable-seeming action.

Guys, it might be getting worse:

The amazing thing is, the baby boomers--or at least some of them--were the ones that were activists and hippies during the 1960s. Those were the guys protesting Vietnam and espousing peace and free love before going all "Greed is good," in the 1980s.

It's stupefying how quickly idealism can turn into the exact opposite.

It's gonna be a long 4 to 8 years
Impeachment would be nice but one has to assume that isn't happening then if it does hooray/

Tldr:
The enemy that trunp is building up isnt so much muslims as it is urban democrats / liberals ... it is you. So the more scorn that is poured, the cleverer the signs and the put downs, the stronger they get. You end up filling the straw man with flesh and blood and turning a largely imaginary division into a real one.

Bannon is trolling smart people, getting a rise, and putting it on tv headed by a reality show master.

The article is really worth reading, it's going to be a long hard slog and making trump look stupid only helps him.

I think the article is right that it's going to be impossible to get rid of Trump as long as the population is polarized against itself in this way. And many of our short-term victories (which are important and need to be won) aren't going to solve that fundamental issue. Here's what I don't quite understand yet:

In Venezuela, we fell into this trap in a bad way. We wrote again and again about principles, about separation of powers, civil liberties, the role of the military in politics, corruption and economic policy. But it took opposition leaders 10 years to figure out that they needed to actually go to the slums and the countryside. Not for a speech or a rally, but for a game of dominoes or to dance salsa — to show they were Venezuelans, too, that they weren’t just dour scolds and could hit a baseball, could tell a joke that landed. That they could break the tribal divide, come down off the billboards and show that they were real. This is not populism by other means. It is the only way of establishing your standing. It’s deciding not to live in an echo chamber. To press pause on the siren song of polarization.

How do you practically do this, especially in a country as big as the US? Who's going to go to the rural areas? How do you get the other side to engage with you enough to recognize your standing?

I'm a liberal. I bite back.

I think Obama, Bernie, and other people on the left should do a shitton of town halls in red states regardless of what the poor reception might be. Spend a whole day answering questions and shit, move to the next town, etc.

If there's one good thing that came out of this, it made me realize what a piece of shit guy who runs TheBitBlock is. I knew he could be a dick, but I had no idea he would take it this far. I had to unfollow and unsubscribe

His entire Twitter reply history is a horror show
Yeah, it has been several years now since people discovered that Josh Thomas of TheBitBlock is a straight up white racist in the textbook American way. It doesn't show in his videos but his Twitter history is beyond vile.

Yeah he seems like a super nice and understanding guy in his videos. But his twitter feed and reactions to anything that goes against his pro-Trump agenda reveals it's an act
