Trump: rebuilding army and extremely vetting refugees

Correct me if im wrong but isnt the army still on XP and pays MS like a bajillion dollars a year to still support it for them?

The military as a whole is moving off of XP, but it's taking a really long time. I'm not sure about Bajillion, but I did find some numbers as of last year for the navy was 9 million for extended support.

Though that is just the navy, the other services may ad much bigger numbers. Not truly sure of the scale however.

Thank you

Some people here need to do some basic reading about the readiness level of the United States military.

If you want a real eye-opener about the US Navy's capabilities vs. the Chinese PLAN take a look at this: A Thousand Splendid Guns

How about we restructure the military away from ww2 thinking of equipment needs.

We don't need as many planes, we don't need as many ships. We do need to upgrade and clean some up, but we don't need to build for a massive land war especially at the same time the president wants to get out of NATO.

If you believe in NATO, and looking out for US allies in Asia then you absolutely do.

The US was able to downsize during the immediate post-Cold War because it lacked any near-peer adversaries for the foreseeable future. For example, as the article I linked mentions, the Navy moved away from sea control and prioritised land attack which has now led to a very real threat posed by the Chinese PLAN. This deprioritizing of sea control also followed a drastic reduction in the overall military inventory. So while America didn't change any of its commitments to its allies, it greatly reduced its ability to assist them. Combined with the war on Terror, and you have real crisis they are facing. If the US doesn't start to rebuild, it won't be the dominant military power anymore.

Not really in danger of anything, PLAN with his old aircraft carrier(yes it's a second hand russian aircraft carrier) poses no challenge for USN

And where is all that cash is going to come from?

20% tax on Canada Imports?

The sizes he is proposing makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck. Never in history has a power swelled their military to sit at peace.

There will be a major war soon (say, within 5 years), i think. It is not gonna be pretty. Maybe not World War size but... not good.
I mean, the so-called-POTUS fuckwad has previously asked why they can't use nukes they have. And now he wants to "rebuild" army.

Modernizing an army is understandable. Everyone does it. But the US armed forces are already the most modern ones...
The way i see it, the only thing rebuilding an army can mean is to make it bigger, and do a purge, remove anything that doesn't agree with the president fuckwad and his administration.

This is not gonna end well.

I hope i'm wrong. But i don't think i am.

Adding on to the pile. I don't understand what he's trying to rebuild.

Does he not understand that this is not the WW2 era? We don't need 1,000,000 infantry to storm a city...nowadays we can to that with a coupla drones and like 100 guys (exaggeration, but you get the idea).

Multi-front war needs manpower.

Also rebuilding works nicely as an euphemism for a purge...

I will admit it is possible Trump is simply a complete and utter idiot but... let's not underestimate idiots.

What exactly is involved in rebuilding the most overfunded defense system in the history of mankind

Modernization does matter. Major Modernization programs in the Navy for instance have been complete garbage leading to a number of programs being scrapped and then shit programs like the Littoral Combat Ship somehow getting through.

Zumwalts were supposed to be the new class of destroyer and now they are just an overpriced 3 ship class that has left a giant whole in Destroyer Modernization. Next Generation of Cruiser was a disaster so another area with no replacement in the foreseeable future.

We should have stuck with the Assault ship Concept instead of the Zumwalts in the end. Assault ship was intended to be a Power Projection Ship that could even replace the aircraft Carrier for missions but the plan was to only buy 2-3 of those and they said hey we will be buying 30+ Zumwalts so scrap the Assault ship. Now we have 3 Zumwalts we are buying for almost 8 billion each whose job can be done better by cheaper submarines etc

Full order on immigration.

I guess he doesn't realize that there's already "extreme" vetting of refugees? I'm not sure how more extreme you could get other than not letting them in at all... that's probably the endgame.

He's such a dickbag. What does "rebuilding the army" even mean?

Rebuilding? What? I don't understand how active Military individuals can be pro-Trump right now.

My best friend's nephew is in the Marines. In his own words he voted Trump because Trump is most likely to take us to war, he's itching to fight. Says he didn't want to go through all that training for nothing. He enlisted right out of high school 3 years ago.

Absolutely. But what does this "rebuilding" mean? Firing everyone who doesn't agree with his fascist views?

Purges are also common in authoritarian states.

Leave soldiers like Yekshemesh best friend's nephew who follow leaders to war without question.

And generally increase military spending most likely.

President Donald Trump said in a new interview Friday that persecuted Christians will be given priority over other refugees seeking to enter the United States, saying they have been "horribly treated."

Speaking with the Christian Broadcasting Network, Trump said that it had been "impossible, or at least very tough" for Syrian Christians to enter the United States.

"If you were a Muslim you could come in, but if you were a Christian, it was almost impossible and the reason that was so unfair -- everybody was persecuted, in all fairness -- but they were chopping off the heads of everybody but more so the Christians. And I thought it was very, very unfair. So we are going to help them."

Trump did not name a reason or offer any evidence about why the agencies that vet refugees, including the Department of Homeland Security and the State Department, would have prioritized Muslim refugees over Christians.

rebuilding what exactly? Jesus. We're not at fucking war with a country. If he were a smarter person with foresight I'd assume he's preparing to invade a general middle east region or idk china or mexico or something. Fucking insane.

Has the army been doing something for the last 15 years that might have lead to a lot of worn out equipment as well as pulled money from developing new weapon systems?

He has put a cap on FY 2017 refugees of 50k.

FY 2017 has so far taken in 30k up to January. So by this count, america will be CLOSED to refugees by March/April, until it opens again October 2017.

It isn't clear whether the 50k cap is on applications for asylum or accepted applications, there is a huge backlog of applications too, meaning the 50k cap can be used up by existing applications for 5 years without taking a single new application.

They are also requiring "in the name of transparency" - lol, requesting the relevant authorities publish a bi-annual breakdown on ..
* crimes committed by all approved immigrants/refugees, both terrorism related, radicalisations,
* and those "charged with a major offense" (but not necessarily convicted).
* and ANY OTHER INFORMATION that highlight this group of people that the AG or secretary of homeland security choose that they decide is relevant to public safety and security.

This is part of the demonisation of foreigners in order to boost support for draconian measures.

...the Secretary of Homeland Security shall examine existing law to determine the extent to which, consistent with applicable law, State and local jurisdictions may have greater involvement in the process of resettlement of refugees in their jurisdictions, and shall devise a proposal to lawfully promote such involvement.

hmmm.

Trump executive order calls for temporarily halting all refugee admissions and blocking all entries from 7 Muslim-majority countries - The Washington Post

Trump also signed a couple additional executive orders today that - well, we don't know what they do because the White House's response was "we don't have to tell you what he signed".

They'll be a surprise. Do you like surprises? I like surprises.

He halted Syrian refugees on Holocaust Remembrance Day. Nice.

Further, the stated "purpose" in the order goes on and on about 9/11, but Saudi Arabia isn't included in the 7 country ban? That doesn't make any sen-

Ah. Got it.

Next week is gonna be fun at the office. One of my clients is Iranian and was weeks away from finally getting his green card. A couple more newly retained that we will probably have to just halt work on for now because it may be pointless.

The GOP the last few elections is big into comparing absolute numbers in the military. Remember Romney trying to nail Obama about our Navy being the smallest since WW2? Obama's comeback about horses and bayonets nailed it.

If Trump wants to 'rebuild the military', maybe he should focus first on fixing/staffing the VA.

gottah make them 100 days of trump in the white house promise appear to actually happen by signing all these BS executive orders

14/14

I mean, come on.

Seriously if you told me this was written after Trump became president in order to make him look bad, I would be like sure.

The fact that this was written in 2004 in a book about what fascists have in common is scary as fuck :/

They'll be a surprise. Do you like surprises? I like surprises.

The surprises are the orwellian fine print buried under the headline of the orders.

There is an agenda at work that has an end-game in mind. Secret protocols, if you like. All these executive orders must serve the greater purpose of the un-written protocols which are only spoken in private between Steve Bannon and a few others.

For example it is obvious that one of these hidden protocols is:
* build hatred distrust and fear of immigrants particularly those from troubled areas.
So buried under the headline executive order are paragraphs that subtly serve that more important protocol.

another hidden protocol would be
* Improve the relationship and profile of an authoritarian regime of power as it serves of de-sensitize citizens to future changes.

others might be
* undermine and destroy the freedom of the press
* dilute democratic opposition by handing power to state governors friendly to future authoritarianism
* blunt the vote from minorities
* encourage oligarchs and remove oversight of money from them.

What we see are campaign slogans turned into executive orders, what we don't get to read are the secret protocols they can only be inferred.

This is why Trump never allowed detail in the campaign, which the press promptly mis-interpreted as vacancy.
Detail would have allowed insight into the actual plans

You should read the article I linked earlier.

An article that compares number of ships, but forget to weight in the dimension of those ships. 60 ships with 220 tons of displacement count to nothing. But what to expect, the USN want money for more and new toys, so they get a scenario that fit their needs. Also I don't think the Harpons will last longer, they were to be replaced I believe.
