This is getting major play right now. There's no way Trump doesn't respond in some way. I cannot wait for Trump to fuck up the only presidential thing he's done thus far.

Color me skeptical, wouldn't put it past political posturing that goes away once the nomination is through.

I hate being in tin foil hat territory but with this administration I can't help but think the worst, combined with wanting the dems to fight sny nominee no matter how reasonable after what they did to Obama. Seats been empty too long as is, why not make them sweat it out.

Even extremely regressive judges tend to view no one as above the law and understand the rule of law is vital to society functioning. Trump trying to rally a cult of personality that obeys him as supreme leader and ignores the judiciary seems to be his end game while paying lip service to the judicial branch as long as they are republican judges.

I would not be shocked if they 8-0 him at the SC just to send a message.

He is just saying this to sound reasonable to Democrats that can filibuster him.

Or he's saying it because he believes in checks and balances and the role of an independent judiciary.

Scalia would've said the same thing. So would literally every SCOTUS justice in history.

Gorusch not being trump's lapdog is pretty much the absolute best case scenario here. Glad he's not just ignoring it.

He should stay quiet and turn liberal once installed at his seat, just to irritate Dear Orange Baby Leader.

Pulling a Souter

Would be nice if after all the bs over Garland, something like that happened. Of course, watch congress actually get off of its ass and impeach him if that really was the case...

maybe he was trying to pull him in for a bro hug or something, they seem awkwardly far apart even for a normal handshake

For getting nominated, yes.

It's remarkable how low Trump has set everyone's expectations, that a Scalialike will coast in because he believes in the idea of the judiciary.

I don't like the sound of this. Judges are not supposed to be subject to political bias.

This is where you get folks complaining about" legislating From the Bench."

I would much rather the judicial system do what it has been doing, which is evaluating the constitutionality of law.

I would sooner be in favor of eliminating the judicial branch altogether If all we're going to do is play the partisan game.

Lol, seriously. Saying he believes in he judicial branch shouldn't even be close to backstabbing Trump or becoming liberal or whatever.

The only reason this would backstab Trump is only because of how fucking sensitive he is to anything.

Uh..... No that's not how it works at the supreme court level. All the judges except maybe Kennedy are 100% in the partisan game. And this judge is 100% in the partisan game from his record. Though, that's mostly because they're picked for their views.

I disagree with the skepticism here. Traditional conservatives haven't completely bought into Trumpism; they're just playing nice because, for the time being, it's politically expedient to do so.

Supreme Court Justices, once appointed, are much more insulated from politics. If Trump's executive orders are as blatantly unconstitutional as they appear to be, I have no doubt that SCOTUS will rule 9-0 against him.

So Trump is going to replace him just like how he going to replace the house speaker. If he gets the position, at least we know he is not a lunatic like Trump.

I ain't falling for this shit again.

Seen it happen too many times. A Republican says something vaguely critical about Trump, they get a flurry of headlines as liberals RUSH to proclaim them "The Adult in the Room" who's going to keep Trump in check and set him straight from the inside. Then we all turn around looking shocked and stupid when they turn around and fall in line with the Trump agenda right when it counts.

We saw Romney do it.

Then Cruz did it.

Then Lindsey Graham did it.

Then John McCain did it.

Spare me, Gorsuch.

There's a clear ideological split between judges, but that's not the same thing as partisanship. Even Judges that are the most ideologically distinct from another will still vote together over 60 percent of the time.

oh please, the judiciary has been political since it's existed. people just want to pretend otherwise.

gorsuch believes that corporations can have religious beliefs, is that not political?

Gorsy wants another yanking!

Conservatives should be all over Gorsuch now like they were with RBG, telling him to not be political.

Oh wait, he's male, he can say whatever he wants.

That's my assumption. Gorusch is a Constitutional troglodyte, & worse, one picked by Trump. I should know better than expect decency from him.

More plausible headline:

Aides of Trump Supreme Court pick Gorusch pander to Democrats to ease confirmation process

CNN reporting that the White House is confirming this...

Its literally the ONE thing they aren't lying about.

This was definitely a tactic.

Some of you guys seriously underestimate the intelligence of Supreme Court judges or nominees because of their political leanings. At the end of the day, those men and women are the cream of the crop and much smarter than most.
