It sucks a bit that such players do not even think about those funny stability updates preventing security breaches, crashes, fixing SDK issues so that your favourite develope does not have to spend extra weeks if not months to work around those issues in s reliable way or rely on post launch patches.

Both competitors were forward thinking from the start.
Except external storage has a clear advantage!
1. You can choose your drive and enclosure.
2. You are not limited by physical size constraints.
3. You don't have to settle with shitty seagate disks in order to "max out" the console.
4. External is elegant, specially considering the fact that its meant to be that way. An adapter tumor on the top or a cable connected to an outside wannabe external setup is very un-elegant.
5. You actually ADD to your storage!
Besides, Sony is in a unique position to be an AND company, all they have to do is be consumer friendly about it. Fears of hacking as a valid reason to ignore consumer friendliness speaks poorly on them.
Seriously, why wouldn't you want them to support replacing internal storage AND adding storage? They can do, they can totally meet and exceed the console competition in regards to storage and make a very consumer friendly option in doing so, but they haven't yet...
So I am hoping they do for their next major feature for their next update. It's not that far fetched of a request, specially if the competittion's been doing it since 2012. I truly want this to happen, would make the PS4 an even more attractive console to some of us.

After backwards compatibility got MS such good press, I'd be shocked if we don't see PS Classics make their way into one of the next couple of updates, hopefully with disc support too.
While I personally find upgrading the internal drive far superior, I also expect external storage support at some point too. Like has been said, Nintendo and MS already allow it, and it's inclusion would give the PS4 the best of both worlds.
Mostly I want folders though. As much as I like the look and functionality of the UI, finding anything that's not been used for a while is bloody annoying.
Other than that, a bit more customisation would be nice and easy for them to implement.

External HDD wouldn't be useful for a lot of people because Sony had the brilliant idea of restricting USB slots to only two on the front, and giving the DS4 a really short battery life.
What this means is that people with wireless headsets are inconvinienced, because who's going to give up the essential USB slot at the front that's basically meant for charging your DS4?

Pre-launch "yes" answer from Penello is irrelevant, Xbox One did not support external HDDs before June 2014. You said it did since day 1.

Honest question: can the PS4's optical drive even read CDs? I've heard mixed things. I know at the very least, I would love to play my digital PSP and PS1 games on the console; would be great don't you think?
Never did I mention the Xbox in that post, I said the competition has been for it day one, and Wii U, this gen's first console, certainly supported it on launch day; it was also planned and thought for for the Xbox One prior to launch (as in that link and various other reports), though it did miss the launch wilndow.
Yeah, backing up some of my larger save files can take forever.

No idea, can't think why it wouldn't be able to though, certainly in the context of possible firmware updates at least.
Mostly I want to be able to just use PS2 games, since I still have to have the system hooked up to my TV, and it'd be nice to be able to finally retire the old girl to storage.

It puzzles me that Sony has repeatedly refused to put at least one rear USB on their consoles...
But with the design of the PS4, they could release a seamless power hub that hugs along the edge with ports on the side if they wanted to. Band-aid fix, but it would sure as hell make for a cleaner setup than a regular powered hub at any rate.

Having the video player decoupled as it's own app (i.e. not directly built into the OS) should mean they can update codecs without a firmware update, but we'll see.
IIRC, there was talk about doing it with save states (i.e. if this variable equals something, that means they beat this boss so give them this achievement).
And on the thread topic, it looks like, so far, there's been a spring update and a fall update every year. If you're going to continue that cadence, you'd want to do it around September/early October, as you don't want to risk screwing up the firmware and messing up consoles too close to the holidays. As far as features, I can't think of any major ones I see them implementing. Saving profiles for custom button mapping seems easy enough to do, and adding support for external hard drives could happen, but they obviously don't consider that a priority. I do think that PS1/2 support is coming eventually, but I think they'd want to announce that at a press conference instead on just as part of the firmware update blog posts. So unless they announce it at TGS (which is possible, as that's where they announced themes IIRC), they'll probably hold that announcement for PSX and the update for next spring.
Wow you are really hung up on this memory thing. Seen so many posts from you about it. If external storage is really your hold up for buying a ps4 and not just a "talking point" then you have no worries since there's not many games you want to play on ps4 any way and storage shouldn't be an issue. 500GB should be plenty for you.

I know they won't (because of PS Now), but if they could do PS3 emulation would you want that too? This is also a pipe dream, but what about PSP/PS Vita emulation?

Streaming games as small as PS1 and PS2 games is an enormous waste of bandwidth. Streaming them is basically an unfeasible solution. Local emulation is the only thing that makes sense, which is probably why there are no PS1 or PS2 games on PS Now.
Also, this seems like a good of a place as any to ask:
Is there any way right now to clean up your home screen applications? Because it is terrible and drives me insane. Apps are organized by order in which they were installed, or recently used, or something really stupid. So my home screen is a completely unorganized timeline of apps and games mixed in with no rhyme or reason.
Is there seriously no way to, at the very least, group it so all my games are together on the home screen instead of separated by Video or PlayStation Music and other stuff?
I really, really hate it.
Right now it's like
What's New > Video > Game > Music > PS Now > Game > Game > Photo > Game > Library
And this is really stupid. Why is it like this. Who thought this maximizes functionality. Why would cutting up and separating all your installed games by system apps seem like a reasonable design.

I think you misunderstood what I said. I was saying if we ever do get local PS1/PS2 downloads, we likely won't also get local PS3 downloads, as it could risk cannibalizing PS Now.

I highly doubt that sony would put any effort into it's OS besides patching exploits. If there's exploits, it'll get worked on and patched within days. Fans telling what they would like to improve on? "We hear ya" and goes back to not caring nor bother trying to improving it.

I'd like to think that Microsoft's BC announcement at E3 will put some pressure on Sony to include PS1 and PS2 emulation on the PS4, both digitally and physically. There's probably a lot of money to be made in bringing over that catalogue of PS1/PS2 Classics on PSN to their current-gen console, so whatever engineering hassle is involved in making it happen, it'll be worth it in the long term.

having to suspend a game to use Spotify and the MediaPlayer is weak. it doesn't make sense when the old MusicUnlimited and the USB player had better usability and didn't suspend games.

Yeah, that's really annoying. I can't tell you how many times I started a game and, on a whim, decided I'd rather have Spotify playing in the background. I decide against it every time, because I don't want to quit out of what I am playing.

Yes, of course. If they got PS3 emulation on PS4 I would gladly take it, same with PSP and Vita. Being able to play all games I want on one console would really be a dream come true.

It's more than a little ridiculous that we're likely to get to the PS4's 2nd birthday without folders or any decent way of organising your content.
I mean, this is operating systems 101, and they botched it so badly. Give us folders or saveable filters with enough metadata to make them worthwhile. What we have now in the library is utterly pathetic.

I'm pretty sure XB1 does that now. If PS4 did it, I'd install my disc based games to the external drive, reserving the internal drive for downloadable games only.

Yay! It did end up coming out in September (final day, but...). So, if the pattern I think I found is correct, we won't get the next major update (3.50?) until February 2016. Could we possibly get hints about its contents at PSX?
