Trying to play other games after TLoU

You don't have to post this in 5 different threads.
No need to reinvent the wheel for the sake of the people who have seen the other two threads. I'll post it wherever I feel it's relevant -- namely, whenever people suggest TLoU is a shooter, interactive movie, or something less than a game. Because it's a game, and an incredible one, for that matter.

It's a case where no game quite scratches the itch TLoU does. The worst part is when you get near the end and you realize you're on the final stretch. :(

Took me until now to hit 35% I am purposely taking breaks in between. Did same with walking dead. Just need to savor it.

OP i feel your blues my man. After finishing TLoU i tried jumping into Mirrors Edge which i was so pumped for and just couldnt do it. I've slowly been chipping away at it but man i need another story driven intense game to fill the hole. On NG+ playthrough of it ao i guess its helping the balance haha.

Play The Walking Dead by TellTale. Its not horror, you will be fine

Actually I forgot to list that above. I did continue playing it today (still on the first chapter) and while the story seems interesting, the gameplay is terribly clunky. I want to play a full game not a point and click adventure right now...

I made the mistake of playing Bioshock Infinite after finishing TLOU. The interaction between Booker and Elizabeth felt so janky and the dialog between them lacked subtlety and felt flat (except towards the ending, that was amazing)

OP get Hotline Miami. It rocks thought its similar in that there is alot of killing lol.

Anyways just ignore the hate TLoU gets. Its something else. People always talk about Half-Life 2, Portal games, ICO and such that are some mind blowing shit. I've played those and TLoU shits all over them.

TLOU is not a shooter. And it's nothing like Uncharted.

[snip]
That's a great write-up and all fair and good, I've just been so burned on what I perceive as similar zeitgeisty stuff time and time again that I'm drawing the line with TLOU. Maybe I'll give it a shot way later in the year or further than that, but I'm not going to let myself be drawn in by release window high again. I'll be glad to eat crow if it eventually ends up seeming like an experience unlike most, but I just have serious doubts about it going in knowing my tastes with how people commonly gush about the hot topic of the time.

I'm already sick of it. Knowing how I feel about these types of shooters having been disappointed with Naughty Dog's Uncharted efforts and the splooging people had over Bioshock Infinite, I knew not to fall into the hype for TLOU. It's just getting kind of overbearing hearing about it in every other thread already.

I feel the same way, but it's a bit easier to ignore this time around after watching the way gaf reacted to UC2.

This is what I'm talking about by the way:

Just let it go in one ear and out the other.

You want to play a game with good gameplay that also tugs on the heart strings?

Like someone else mentioned about, Valkyrie Profile... I prefer the DS game, VP: Covenant of the Plume

How many hours long is Last of Us roughly? I'm trying to decide if I should get it or not.
Is it similar to the Uncharted games? I finished 1 and 2 in about 8-10 hours I think, and that was really taking my time with them.

That's the way I felt about Ellie and Joel tbh. I didn't have any issues with Joel he was your typical cliche post apocalyptic survivor but Ellie....I wanted to put a bullet in her myself every time she opened her mouth.

I'll really never understand the "I played this great game, now I can't enjoy others games" mentality.

I played The Last Of Us. I loved it. Doesn't mean I have issues playing other great games...

The Last of Us was great. But's it's just a game guys. It's not a life-changing event.

You can't find a better game. Turn in your gaf account, sell your systems, and find a new hobby.

Depends but probably around 15 hours.

why is this always the standard response when someone doesn't gush over TLOU

If you've played TLoU and didn't like it, that's perfectly fine.

If you've played TLoU, didn't like it, and you can't possibly imagine how someone else, with a different taste than yours, could possibly love this game, you lack fucking imagination and empathy.

And that doesn't even cover the part where you decide to go there and mock people for having too much fun with a game.

Assuming someone like that hasn't played the game IS in this case giving them the benefit of the doubt.

I don't mean 'you' personally, obviously.

And yeah, this reasoning applies to other games too. Nothing wrong with not liking something, but claiming people are having a better time than they should have is a forum equivalent of coming to a party where everyone seems to be having fun, deciding you don't like it, so you're gonna take a shit on the carpet.

It took me 20+ hours but I don't rush through games

Took me about 17 hours on normal mode.

Anywhere between 13 - 20 hours seems about right though. Some people rush through, while some take their time.

Ugh, TT's The Walking Dead is a terrible suggestion for a follow-up to TLoU. TWD barely has gameplay at all, and what threadbare interaction is there is slow, repetitive and cumbersome. To go from the harrowing suspense, improvised tactics and emergent design of TLoU to the "walk over here, move a cursor over there" of TWD is just... No.

I really think Shattered Memories is the better choice, even if its world and enemy encounters aren't as interesting as TLoU. The grounded sense of surveying your surroundings with the flashlight and such is the main parallel, and the story is excellent.

Infinite has a diferent style and tone. Its more stylized and exagerated right down to story, characters and dialogue. Doesnt mean its worse than TLoU. Not at all

TLoU blues

Biggest mistake I did was go watch Man of Steel directly after finishing the game. All I remember from the movie now is baby superman's penis and lots of explosions. But TLoU is so fucking heavy, I just start gazing off into the horizon whenever I think about it.

Not necessarily tugging on heart strings. Just something with great character interaction and good gameplay. Something you get addicted to...

It's okay, I hate good/popular things sometimes too.

I'm already sick of it. I already played the game.
I loved the game, i think it's great.
It's my GOTY so far.

It's mostly due to the increasing hyperbole surrounding it, that i fear i may end up getting sick of it by the end of the year, a reaction which, by the way, i consider completely silly and irrational.
The game is what it is, despite the characterization people make of it, and yet... it has a clear influence on my opinion of it.
I hate that.

Heh, I call this Dark Souls syndrome. It's when you play a game that's fantastic at some things and now you find other games that aren't fantastic at those things boring. The reason I call it Dark Souls syndrome is because playing Skyrim or even The Witcher 2 after playing Dark Souls is like having your head dunked into a bucket of cold water because the combat is such a downgrade, even when those other games may excel at other things. However, it undoubtedly applies to any other game that really excels at one aspect like Devil May Cry 3 or (Apparently) The Last of Us.

Best advice is to switch genres completely. Hotline Miami, Super Meat Boy, and Super Mario Galaxy 2 are good suggestions; they're very focused on gameplay that is nothing like The Last of Us, and they don't focus at all on the things that are weaker than The Last of Us.

18 hours for me.

I know that feeling OP. The Last of Us is so good that a lot of other games feel sort of lacking in comparison. I'm only managing to get by by playing something completely different on every level (Medieval 2: Total War). The regular AAA fair I can't bring myself to play right now though. I'm strongly considering playthrough #3 on Last of Us...it's still very much on my mind.

Im sure it was due to her potty mouth (which would be understandable) but thats believable in that scenario. Else there was something wrong as the player gets attached to both players unlike other games where the connections arent there with players or the characters lack emotion or seem flat in character.

Some TLoU fans are already doing a great job of making the rest of us look like a brainwashed cult of loonies, lets not shit the entire point and click adventure genre while we are at it :/

I suggested it because its very character driven. And what it does, it does it very well.

TLoU blues

Everyone saying Rogue Legacy, I agree 100%. Its the first game I am playing since beat and really enjoying TLOU, and it is an amazing experience so far. Its so far away from TLOU in genre in style, but it is almost just as good of an experience.

Wow. Really op?

This lou hype is ridiculous.
I don't usually do this, but I actually am interested in TLOU and am not in the mood for another Uncharted just yet so I've been waiting. When I see impressions I take them seriously, but sometimes I have to make sure the post isn't coming from somewhere else. What's up with this:

The Last of Us' autosave has a glitch. Read if you're playing. [Apparently fixed]
(6-14-2013)
it has happened to me as well i have lost an hour and now it wont auto save or regular save at all, as they are greyed out. not too happy and im not touching this game until they sort it out

What's up with all the negativity around The Last of Us now?
(6-14-2013)
Pretty much this, the game does have numerous bugs and AI issues and frame rate/graphic disparity (it looks fantastic in some areas and fair drab in others). the core game itself is very good however. but i don't see how it got all those near perfect scores

Halfway through the year...what's your GOTY so far?
(6-30-2013)
Haven't played tlou yet but my god if it isn't absolutely fucking mind blowing this ill be gaf all over again with the uncharted 2 overhype. I bought into that too and yeah pretty wack game.

From what I have played though, bio inf, then probably guacamelee.

Why can't the industry give us more games like TLoU?
(Today)
Well I did end up buying it and have played roughly 5 hours into it? And without complaining too much, yeah. I'm not having a whole lot of fun. The game is at its best when it's telling its story. When I'm actually playing it, it goes between frustrating and just bland/linear.

The only thing keeping me going is the knowledge that it is a pretty short game and that the story does not disappoint. But yeah pretty much every time I actually get to play the game, it's like "ugh more of the same stealth kill stealth kill stealth kill move to next area"

It does do atmosphere well ill give it that. These ND games are just not my thing I guess.

You don't say...

Go play RE4, or the new Fire Emblem, or Mario Galaxy 2, or Half Life 2, or . . .

TLoU isn't the best game ever. Far from it, in fact.

Just as tense as LoU and has an extremely memorable female companion.

She just might not be the kind of female companion you're used to in a videogame.

Game isn't overly long either. Maybe 12-15 hours on your first playthrough It's split into 8 "levels", not including the tutorials which show you everything you need to play the game. On Normal or Easy it's challenging but not overly so too.

edit: and this is on the bottom of the page so you won't read this :( or you will be put off by the grafics :(
