Trying to play other games after TLoU

Gonna go out on a limb and guess you have not played The Last of Us.

Ehh, I feel like the only person on this forum who rented it, played for about an hour, got bored, didn't play it again for a few days and then lamented the money I wasted for keeping it for so long and then returning it to Redbox without actually even playing it.

The pacing in TLoU is so damn good. Also, I love how music barely ever plays in the game. It's so quiet! Really, I've never seen a game with such subtlety and restraint.

For every enemy encounter, you have 15-20 minutes of just quiet exploration, searching every nook and cranny, scavenging for supplies, crafting items, reading notes and letters you find, chatting with the other characters, taking in a new sweeping vista at every sight. I think this might be one of its addictive qualities, actually; you get sucked into this game because the game doesn't distract you. It just lets you take it in.

And then you get to the enemy encounters and it's tense as hell. I hardly fired any bullets in this game -- I hardly had any bullets in the first place -- but running away, hiding and sneaking were often the best (and most fun) strategy. Enemies are smartly placed and you can read their patterns well, so it's rather intuitive to come up with ways to distract and elude them, moving in and out of the complex room layouts like some sort of beautifully choreographed dance. You never feel safe, though. It's remarkable they can strike that balance.

Infinite has a diferent style and tone. Its more stylized and exagerated right down to story, characters and dialogue. Doesnt mean its worse than TLoU. Not at all

Personally, I think he's right though, I didn't bond with Elizabeth at all, she felt just as much an automaton as the Handy man, and only existed to hand me ammo and supplies. It didn't help that she wasn't especially well modeled or animated in the cut scenes (compared to the Disney princesses she was referencing), or the models in Dishonored (which were similarly styled).

The dialogue in infinite also lacks subtlety, even if the themes are interesting. It's a very finely crafted game, but The Last of Us is on another level, and I can see how playing infinite after that would be a come down.

Another fantastic thing about The Last of Us was the narrative and gameplay pacing, which rarely got tedious. In comparison, I remember being very ready to wrap up Booker's story long before the secrets and mysteries were revealed.

I don't usually do this, but I actually am interested in TLOU and am not in the mood for another Uncharted just yet so I've been waiting. When I see impressions I take them seriously, but sometimes I have to make sure the post isn't coming from somewhere else. What's up with this:

The Last of Us' autosave has a glitch. Read if you're playing. [Apparently fixed]

What's up with all the negativity around The Last of Us now?

Halfway through the year...what's your GOTY so far?

Why can't the industry give us more games like TLoU?

You don't say...

Are you saying none of my points are valid whatsoever? MANY people have stated that AI is broken. And that save game bug DID exist.

Are you trying to insinuate I have an agenda?

I paid money for the game. I gave it a fair chance.

OP go play Shattered Memories. Seriously, its not really a horror game. Its a mindfuck trip

Go go go

Just as tense as LoU and has an extremely memorable female companion.

She just might not be the kind of female companion you're used to in a videogame.

Game isn't overly long either. Maybe 12-15 hours on your first playthrough It's split into 8 "levels", not including the tutorials which show you everything you need to play the game. On Normal or Easy it's challenging but not overly so too.

edit: and this is on the bottom of the page so you won't read this :( or you will be put off by the grafics :(

The graphics are the least archaic and offensive thing about ss2.

If you want to stay in the story heavy territory and not go too far back, Virtue's Last Reward. The feels my mind went through in the last couple of hours of this game...

Shattered Memories

Underappreciated, really. Needs to be Wii version though. Motion controls done right, adding to the atmosphere.

This thread just got more interesting.

Some TLoU fans are already doing a great job of making the rest of us look like a brainwashed cult of loonies, lets not shit the entire point and click adventure genre while we are at it :/

I suggested it because its very character driven. And what it does, it does it very well.
But TWD is character-driven at the expense of gameplay. TLoU is not, which is why TWD (or any point-and-click) would be a disappointing follow-up if you're coming off TLoU all high from the emergent stealth design.

You claimed to have played the game for the first time yesterday (you're supposedly a few hours in) but have been talking about encountering glitches and other flaws for over a week.

edit: two weeks

After I quit TLoU I jumped back into my most recent replay of Witcher 2. Was quickly more into it than I ever was playing TLoU despite it being my 4th time through the game.

I'm sorry, but from what I managed to get through before the gameplay finally told me "I hate this. It's not fun" was that is basically a tired retreaded zombie story with great production values. Other than Ellie I was not super impressed by the acting in it either. Joel's accent felt all over the place and drove me nuts.

Portal 2 is a great choice to play right after the Last of Us. Silly, funny, and lighthearted but still a product of absolute genius.

we are hitting grandiose levels of hyperbole now

Have you ever considered that someone else was posting from my account?

Smh. Fwiw the person who posted about the bus actually went on and loved the game. And I personally didn't.

Keep trying to find an agenda though!

I feel the same way, but it's a bit easier to ignore this time around after watching the way gaf reacted to UC2.

This is what I'm talking about by the way:

Just let it go in one ear and out the other.

You know I never over hype myself with games. I have loved all the games I mentioned but was never an "OMG you have to play this ish" because even though I had a great experience with them, the story or characters never really interested me when I finished those games. Never really wondered what happened to them next. Didnt get any connection with them. TLoU is different. The characters are just so well written, acted and voiced, I got to say its a great performance. The story is great in that it leaves you wondering why x person did this or will they be ok from now on at the end. I have never experienced that with any media including movies. (I feel gamers with kids might even feel something more special)

Having said that, it seems some of you guys over hype yourselves over every major release which is stupid, really. But if you guys are burnt out, I dont blame you. At least give it a go in the future. Its up there with games that have to be played at least to see what the fuss is about.

I've stopped playing big, AAA, cinematic games entirely after TLOU. I'm gonna be sticking to Nintendo games and indie games for a while.

Erm no, you're just inconsistent as fuck. One post you say that you haven`t bought TLOU yet, and then for a couple other posts you are pretending as if you actually played the game yourself.

Make up your mind dude, did you actually play the game or not?

Read my post above...

Something similar happened to me when I played Dark Souls. Couldn't play anything else for months because every other game seemed so boring and stale. Don't worry OP. It takes time. Replay some older games you haven't played in years. It helps.

I am genuinely baffled by this thread.

As am I. Not because of the TLoU love-fest, it's just the latest addition to a list of games that a large and vocal chunk of GAF lose their minds over (MGS4, Uncharted 2, and Dark Souls being other examples) so that's not at all surprising.

I guess I've just never had an experience like this with any game. I mean, I loved Journey and RDR to death and they're far and away my two favorite games of this gen, but they didn't ruin gaming for me because they were just that damn good. The concept just sounds silly to me.

Come on. That looks like a very consistent collection of posts from a guy that isn't as enamored with the game. It doesn't match the consensus but I don't see anything egregious about those posts.
I wasn't calling out the fact that he doesn't like the game, but that he has been saying that he doesn't like the game (and has been encountering glitches and other flaws) for two weeks before he claimed to buy it.

Or am I missing some kind of context?

seriously, I hate to repeat myself, but play Max Payne 2.

it's the perfect counterpoint to TLoU. heavy emphasis on shooting, heavy emphasis on story—but rather than the ultra serious story you get in TLoU, you get one of the most hilariously pulpy games out there with amazing atmosphere. it doesn't take itself too seriously, but everything it attempts, it pulls off incredibly well. 3 may have come out this generation and have pretty graphics but 2 is the real crown jewel in the franchise (1 aint bad either, but I suspect it's too dated to get into at this point).

it's also basically the last great non-RE-4-y/Gears-y cover over the shoulder type third person shooter. pretty arcadey, great gunplay.

it'll also play on literally anything. seriously. It ran on my shitty integrated graphics card on a six year old laptop at silky smooth 60 fps + some graphical mods. It's absurdly cheap. It's the perfect change of pace imo.

Can't see where you're coming from, OP.

Immediately after beating The Last of Us, I started playing Silent Hill (the original). Not only is it my first ever Silent Hill game, it's also my first ever PS1 game (yeah, I know).

I've had no trouble adjusting to the outdated controls or horrible voice acting considering the rest of the game is still quality.

Well, to each his own I guess. If you leave a game with a very distinct feel and go play another that has a quite diferent one, you have to be able to reset your mind and look at things in the context of the world that game is presenting you.
Bioshock games are not subtle, and they are better for it. Suits their bigger than life DNA.

I have no issues going from one to the other. I actually wish I could play Infinite for the first time again :(.
I thought of replaying it as I watched TLoU credits roll, but I have a backlog of awesome titles to go through.

Arkham City next. Or Sin and Punishment 2. Or maybe I'll finish Red Dead Redemption
...ahhhhhh

Yeah, I read closer. I missed that the first time through. I seemed like he bought it at launch and ran into some glitches but continued through but then says he never played it in one of his posts.

Most players will hardly ever shoot their guns in TLoU. Those who do will find themselves scouring every nook and cranny of the environment looking for bullets. I usually only had three bullets per gun -- maybe seven or nine, tops.

You must be awful; almost every enemy I popped dropped ammo. You can literally get through the entire last section using only an assault rifle once you pick one up; this isn't like ZombiU where ammo's a serious problem.

"Emergent stealth design" means there are many ways to approach each encounter, many routes to take, many ways in and out of each area, many ways to distract and elude and evade and stealth-kill or outright direct-kill your enemies, which I detailed at length in this post here. The enemies even change their behavior based on your actions; if human enemies see you have a gun, for example, they become much more defensive. New situations literally emerge, their tactics changing with yours.

I didn't use guns, for the most part, but with the exception of the very last level (where enemies have power weapons, and you can scavenge them), ammo was fairly scarce, unless you're playing on Easy or something.

Have you played the game or not? None of this BS. If you haven't played the game, play the game, then criticize it. If you haven't played the game you can't cry about being unfairly criticized because that's EXACTLY what you're doing!

Edit: The save game bug was fixed the first day of launch of the game.

Personally, the New Super Luigi Bros. DLC has been great for breaks from The Last of Us. They are such worlds apart.
