Nearing the end, a girl from CN stood up and announced that everyone under 18 needed to stand up and would be given something special but had to leave. The kids filed out as the adults kind of looked at each other with a big ? over our heads. Genndy kept grinning.

After all the kids were shooed, Genndy looked at the remaining 20-30 of us and said "We made something special as an inhouse project to show only at CN parties and the like...I loved it soo much you guys are gonna get a treat...Dexter's Rude Removal"

The girl then stood in front of us and warned us with bodily harm if she caught any of us taping anything or even remembering hard. She was pretty much imagining it getting out there and torpedoeing CN with lawsuits. "I want you people to know this will NEVER be made public...so count yourself extremely lucky". Finally Genndy shooed her away.

That would make sense. It wasn't banned, but there was an episode of the Chip and Dale cartoon on Disney that featured some Chinese gangsters who spoke with very stereotypical accents and were dubbed over in later reruns.
The thing is that Tale Spin anthropomorphically uses animals as races all the time (as per The Jungle Book). That back then shouldn't be a big deal, especially for a retroactive ban. Makes even less sense now... I'll re-watch the episode again, maybe I missed a word or something. There are shows you watch as a kid where you KNOW you're watching something that normally would be censored, and that was just another ep. to me.

As for Dexter's Lab... no words. :lol

"Banned" is kind of a misleading term, as there is no organization that is doing the banning (at least in the US). It's just whatever network that airs the show skipping over episodes, either on the first airing or in syndication. They're almost always available on the DVD sets, or when another channel gets the syndication rights, or when the issue is no longer so sensitive.

Cowboy Bebop had a few episodes skipped over in its first US cycle due to 9/11 over-sensitivity, but they're all shown regularly now.

An whole fucking ton of incredibly-not-PC Looney Tunes don't get shown on teleivision anymore. Racist war propaganda primarily, or ones that are just really mean-spirited, and some Speedy Gonzales, I think?

Speedy's cousin, Slowpoke Rodriguez, has been excised from the canon, I think.

The Outlaw Star episode "Hot Springs Planet Tenrei" was banned from airing on Toonami in the US because of nudity and a lot of sexual content. I used to be confused when Gene had those new Caster shells because of that.

Also, I've known about that Dexter's Lab episode since I was in my early teens. I used to really enjoy knowing about these banned episodes. I remember being so freaked out by the Porygon episode because it was pretty scary to think a cartoon could cause so much harm. On that note, I'm pretty sure that episode is banned worldwide. I think 4Kids may have edited it, but they never ended up showing it. I might be wrong, though. In fact, I heard Porygon (and all other forms) was never shown again on the series because of that. Although, he was briefly shown in one of the movies.

You can watch the scene on Youtube. Just search for Porygon. There's a moment where the whole screen flashes red and blue for about 10 seconds

You can watch the whole episode. In fact, that wikipedia link someone posted features a clip from the infamous scene.

On a related note, I heard that some people watching the news story following that episode had seizures because they showed part of that scene in the report.

There is an xfiles episode that is banned from tv. It's called "House" or something like that. It is a fucking awesome creepy episode about a mutated inbred family. (oh, this episode was banned cause its so fucked up. You want to watch the episode though)

That is a great episode. Morgan and Wong are very talented writers.

Too bad about The One :/

No banned episode (well, one was pulled from syndication for a while but is now regularly shown on Nicktoons Network) but Rocko's Modern Life has gotten a few scenes outright censored out of the show.

Ren & Stimpy originally had an episode titled Mans Best Friend which was banned for this scene in particular until Spike picked up the show and renamed it Ren & Stimpy's Adult Party Cartoon.

Tiny Toons had a very special skit banned where they all got drunk and KILLED THEMSELVES.

Finally, I believe any Beavis and Butthead episode which dealt with fire was banned as well.

If you want more, here's a pretty exhaustive list of things that have been banned over the years.

I am almost certain that reruns of Tom and Jerry have the black house owner/housekeeper/whatever overdubbed. Considering what I remember about how she used to sound, I am not at all surprised if that's true.

Or maybe I'm just remembering things wrong.

No, they got rid of the "Mammy" voice and replaced it with a new one altogether along with any and all blackface jokes. Smoking, drinking, and implied suicide are all still present though.

Man. Why'd you have to go and link to TVTropes?

I want my two hours back. :(

The pilot episode of "The Lone Gunmen", the spinoff of the X-Files. The plot had the US government hijacking a plane and attempting to fly it into the World Trade Center, and blame it on terrorists in order to justify increasing the arms budget. It was originally aired six months before 9/11.

It's not surprising why it wasn't shown again afterwards. It is available on the DVD set though, and the creators even talk about what a shock it was for them when they heard.
The plot thickens

Lone Gunmen/X-Files actor, Dean Haglund, who played the role of Richard 'Ringo' Langly in both series was in Austin to interview Alex Jones for his new polemic documentary on the mindset of modern-day America. Dean kindly agreed to an on-camera interview himself.
Jones and Haglund talked about the Lone Gunmen episode that aired prior to September 11th in which an inside faction of the government posing as terrorists hijacks a 727 by remote control and targets the World Trade Center.
Haglund stated that after years of writing the X-files, the FBI and NASA would approach Chris Carter with plots for stories. He also discussed the fact that the CIA have since the 80's hired informants posting as psychics to attend Hollywood parties and report back the the CIA on general trends and talking points.

In the original DVD release of the Tom and Jerry Spotlight Collection, the Mammy episodes were re-dubbed. You could send them a request for a disk with the unedited episodes. Eventually, though, they must have just put the uncut episodes on later printings, because that's what I have. My daughter went through a T&J phase, and it makes me cringe when when I hear the Mammy dialogue or see a blackface moment.

Oh WTF. I remember that episode... part of TheDisney Afternoon. That was a FANTASTIC episode, sent a message about gun safety and everything. Plus, they actually foreshadowed back to that incident in a later ep. when Eliza always locked her gun away when coming home.

When Gargoyles first began, I was ridiculously hooked. The animation was superb and the story felt epic and grand. Then, like a week after the opening five-parter, they aired this episode. It felt really condescending and forced and I was so insulted I swore off the show. Have only ever watched a handful of episodes since then, despite liking ST:TNG actors enough to watch an episode of Leverage and like 20 minutes of one of The Librarian TV movies.

Really, really did not like that episode. Shouldn't be banned from re-airing though.

That X-Files episode is called Home I believe. It wasn't banned in UK I don't think, I've seen it on TV.

Oh God, I watched that episode when it aired! I still can't forget that end scene. I didn't realize there was public controversy over the episode -- but it's merited!

That show was so damn good. I miss it!

EDIT: The person responsible for that should have been stoned to death in the streets, that is the most obscene shit I have ever seen feed to children.

IIRC, an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer called "Earshot" (which dealt with mass-shooting in high school) was postponed from being screened for a while due to the Columbine incident.

Two episodes of Buffy were temporarily banned for similar reasons.

One was where Jonathan was going to kill himself (but it was made to look like he was going to go on a rampage).

The other was the finale where the Principal turned into a giant snake.

Both of them were too close to Columbine.

Last Horizons being banned is a joke, I watched that as a kid. Nothing remotely offensive
unless they consider the "Asian = panda" thing racial profiling
. Even the
terrorism/invasion fleet/Pearl Harbor
thing doesn't jibe.

Flying Dupes is banned :lol :lol :lol insane. These are retroactive bans, these eps. aired MULTIPLE times on TV. I thought you meant "banned" as in never aired because they were killed by S&P/censors.

Of course they are retroactive bans, we all watched these things with no problem when they first aired.

Rarely do most cartoons "ban" episodes before they air, Pokemon is one of the only ones that has done it on multiple occasions.

Everything else gets banned in syndication by the pc police, but for a lot they might as well be considered banned because if they do not get released on DVD or someone does not have it on VHS from their youth you would never know about it since it does not run in syndication

Yeah I remember that, I had to get my copy of the Buffy S3 finale from a friend in Canada who had seen it.

Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex - "Jungle Cruise"

Despite the series airing at 12AM it was initially skipped by Canadian TV broadcaster YTV for extreme graphic content. The episode in question details a serial murder who skins their victims. It cemented the fact that the series was a horrible fit for the channel (a channel that targets 6-17 years old might I add), but the episode eventually found itself on the channel at a later slot, and managed to get itself back into regular rotation for repeat broadcasts. YTV never picked up GITS second season.

Cybersix - Various Episodes

Fox Kids in the US picked up this dark series based on Argentinean comics of the same name. The television series, while tame in comparison to its source material, features borderline Nazi antagonists (in the comics, they are Nazi's), and a cross-dressing protagnist who kills to gain her life force (in the comics, she drains her opponent's life away like a vampire). The show's edited and disjointed version lasted only a few weeks on the Saturday morning block before being axed. Like GITS, it wasn't a right fit. In Canada, where the series partially originates from (it was a Canada-Argentina-Japan co-pro) the series has aired in full for years.

Sailor Moon - Sailor Stars

We never got confirmation as to why this last season of Sailor Moon never made its way to English speaking audiences. The series was a hit, but speculation arose that the season was deemed to risque due to a variety of new characters that were introduced being crossdressers. Shortly after Stars being a no-show Toei pulled all rights regarding Sailor Moon from all companies worldwide and kept in hiding in Japan. So Stars being a no-show may be Toei's doing.

The ridiculous often comes into play with general censorship on animation. Gohan crying due to hunger, and dreaming of an apple in DragonBall Z, for instance, has been edited in some versions. Baffling stuff.

I can't find any reference on the web, but I remember that re-runs of this Simpsons episode had a brief scene cut out after 9/11. The scene: Sideshow Bob flying a biplane into a shack in the desert (and bouncing off). Ridiculous.

Starts at 5:13 if you want to fast forward.

Part 2
Man, this should never have been banned. TV land is stupid.

I was watching Dog Bites Man on Netflix today. For those that don't know/haven't heard of it, the show is a about an incompetent team of news casters (co-starring Zach Galifianakis) who go around and mess with real people who have no clue they are being filmed as part of a comedy show. It's similar in style to the Ali-G show, so if you've seen that, you really need to check this out because it's fucking hilarious.

Sadly, the show only lasted 9 episodes. I suppose this was in part due to the nonsensical title of the show, and the fact that it wasn't made explicitly clear until episode 5 that only the main news cast was in on the script.

To my surprise, I found out through an interview with Zach G. that there was actually a 10th episode filmed, but never shown: "There was one episode that never aired where we went to a real KKK rally. I got to ask the grand wizard of the KKK if he'd ever seen Big Momma's House 3. Which was probably the highlight of my career."

I can understand why Comedy Central decided not to air it. I mean, doing so would probably be more trouble than what it was worth. Still, I want to fucking see it! I'm sure they filmed a shitload of stuff that never made it to the air, and there was never a DVD release. I kind of hoped that when Zach became more famous after the Hangover, that Comedy Central would try to sort of cash in, but they passed.

Huh? The One was an awesome little B-movie.

Too bad about Black Christmas. There was almost a great film there. Not sure how they fucked that one up so spectacularly.

If you like Morgan and Wong, you should check out Penelope Spheeris's The Boys Next Door. It is an almost completely forgotten movie that they wrote. Very disturbing.

There was an episode of Beast Wars that didn't go past the script stage ("Dark Glass" I think). It was about Rattrap attempting to recover Dinobot's memory and place it into Dinobot II's body, only to find out it doesn't work, and that his friend was lost forever. Staff on the show initially said it was a bit too grim, then later backed on their stance saying it wasn't action packed enough, and even calling into question the quality of the script. It did serve a piece to the story that did continue on, as in the series finale Dinobot II does appear to gain his memory back even if just for a short moment.

A skit for the short-lived Dana Carvey show was scrapped minutes before it went live, due to a call from Spielberg's people. In it, a Nazi and his pal were driving around in a panic, late for some meeting, and unable to make sense of their map. The title?

Schindler's Lost.
