There's a gatekeeper that requires your password to let you into your account. Someone snooped around and found another entrance to each account without a gatekeeper. They don't need your password then, they can just walk in. That's one idea, anyway. It's more plausible to me than having the actual password to each of these accounts.

This makes sense. Basically these individuals were using a third party app that logs into their account for them to orchestrate tweets. They probably got access to the third party app token specific to each verified account.
I wish it was Twitter that properly got compromised, but instead it will be the developer of the third party app who will be crucified.

Bitcoin is (to an extend) tracable. If it would this be something more cryptic, it would be carried through Monero. This is what North Korea mines. And no it's not same, but certainly as far as I know, this is using Bitcoin because why not, otherwise it's pretty substantial cyber attack, I would say. Just to probably send a message.
Also:
I would be way more concerned, how twitter can be hijacked to cause some damage, which is not in "virtual currency".
I think that it just makes you think about what people really can do, which they don't want you to see. This was just a message, that "we fucking own you"...from unknown group.
