Two new Quake 4 screens

New Q4 screen:

I can't wait.

Why oh, why won't they just revive the beautiful techno-gothic look of the original? That artstyle would look so amazing on the modern Doom III engine and would be such a breath of fresh air. More generic sci-fi, and by Raven at that. They make great games, but they are no id.

I never understood the uproar over the Doom3 engine anyway. The new Unreal engine looks much more organic, of course it's not out yet, but still.

And it won't be out for so long that it actually has 0 meaning at the moment.. Compare Doom 3 to Source, CryTech or UT2K4 engines, and that would actually be a worthwhile comparison. And among all four, I like Doom 3 the most and Crytech a close second..

so their are 2 DOOM 3 expansions in the making ?

That is what I'm thinking.

The second pic looks like something right out of Doom 3. So does the design of the character in the first pic. But this is Raven developing it right? It should be good, but these screens aren't impressing me.

Quake 4 was always going to look like this.

Why does the soldier in the centre have a transparent reddish box behind him?

Thats because the engine is new and is designed for newer hardware.

Anyone that thinks this looks anything other than good needs an eye exam. Jebus it's like this with every other game on this board. "I don't like the way the light reflects off his boots there." "It's too plastic." Blah Blah Blah.

That actually looks like half a hallway. You can see the floor that doesn't match up with the rest of the enviroment. There's also what looks to be a door and some smoke coming out in that half hallway too.

Looks real bad even, wheres all the fancy Doom 3 shadows and effects? Ulti-bland!

Not excited about this.

I don't think it looks that bad.

If they have a good soundtrack like the first game, and retain some staples like the lovely frag sound, I'll be happy. Hopefully this supports more in multiplayer.

I think Doom 3 is a bit like Quake II to be honest so the similarities don't really surprise me. Both set on red planets, where everyone dies except you, and you have to kill everything that can move from there on in? Sounds about right..

The first Quake is probably the coolest runandgun I've played. I loved the medieval gothy vibe and everything. This looks like the same old generic shit. Why did they ditch that look for the sequels?

I think everyone's saying it sucks cause those shots have NO FUCKING SOUL WHATSOEVER. It's leeching off what little soul Doom 3 had.

Great point about the techno-gothic look from Quake 1. That would look amazing updated with current-gen graphics. I'm pretty damned sick of the super-futuristic thing, myself. Bring on The Bad Place 2005....dm4 all the way, baby.

It won't happen. They said firsthand that it will be more like Q2 than Q1. Which is a shame.

Q1 / Quakeworld was the pinnacle of FPS/Deathmatch.. :(

In the meantime, there's always Half Life: Deathmatch Classic YAY! (Fingers crossed for Deathmatch Classic: Source)

Fixed.

This is Quake baby! There's no room that Mickey Mouse jump pad shit. I'm still amazed at how far off the original concept Quake ended up being. Romero must have smoked some serious hash back in the day, b/c the concept for the game was so cool, and the finished product was so...average. Meh. PEACE.

In this particular case, the overly plastic look is common on a few specific next generation engine games - whereas other advanced engines don't suffer from it. It -does- look unnatural, when you're shooting for the Hyper Reality (TM) that game graphics seem to be striving for.

I don't think anyone is saying these overly-plastic game engines and lighting systems are technically bad. They're obviously very advanced. But the look they produce leaves a lot to be desired for many. And besides, most of the bitching here is over More Damn Space Marines.

I didn't think it would be right to start a new thread about this so I'll ask here:

I have the original quake without that Reznor cd soundtrack. Is it worth hunting down? I remember hearing the 'songs' when it first came out and I've played the game ever since without. Or maybe there's a site that has them up for download? I've tried p2p...

If you like dark ambient, yes. Some of it's just so-so slowed-down backing noise from NIN tracks, but there's also some really good soundscape work. It's aged pretty well, too.

I think there was a (bootleg?) album of it released, but you'll probably have an easier and cheaper time tracking down a copy of the game.

Bleh. Here's hoping somebody comes out with high-quality versions of dm1 through 4.

And I couldn't agree more on the second comment, although DOOM II will allways have a special place in my heart.

It looks ok... Not anything eyepopping that just makes you say,"Damn, that looks good!" Honestly, I think doom 3 looks better just based off these screens. But we'll have to see how this turns out.

Man, Stroggos was orange.

Something Raven seem to have missed as well, going by those grey-on-brown outdoor shots from a while back.

I'm still disappointed at the final Quake product compared to the early screens I saw in Next Generation. Flying dragons, stone hammers, and a more medieval look to the whole game would have made everything so much better. I have no idea why they changed it.

The hell? No...that's an open door and it's red. The smoke is coming from the weapon being fired in the foreground.

An open door to a parallel dimension that has red lighting in it, is what you're saying, right?

Behind the right guy there's smoke coming out from the ground, and it's all lit red. That entire rectangle behind the guy is somewhere else. Just look at how the ground texture doesn't match up with rest of the ground. There's a dark black shadow or bar that just stops where the rectangle ends. There are also stains in that rectangle that don't sync up with the stains for rest of the floor.

Doors also don't appear in the middle of a corridor like that without some sort of frame to surround it.

I think I could forgive Quake 4 for looking exactly the same as Doom 3 if it isn't as horribly mundane and antiquated as Doom 3 gameplay-wise. Give me some fresh fucking gameplay and some decent AI and I'll be happy (maybe). Just don't suck ass like your cousin.

Oh shit, are you serious? Anyone know where I can see pics of this stuff? Back then computers were still expensive as hell, so I didn't pay attention to PC games, but as of late there are alot of games from around 95/96 I'd like to look into playing again.

I don't think anyone is bitching about how good it looks technically. It just looks like more generic sci-fi crap artistically.

I like how it turned out though, with the fusion military medieval look. IMO id started going down the shitter when Romero left.

Oh get over it already. Doom and Quake are old school retro shooters and the sequels should be that way. I bought Doom 3 hoping for *the* antiquated gameplay and was thrilled with it. If you want a fresh game experience buy a fresh new game and quit whining. Doom is Doom, it just won't ever be what you want.
