Metroid 4 Prime: Beyond | New Trailer

I expect the exact opposite, when I play a sequel I want the game to "similar" to the old games. While you need new things, it has to feel "the same" in a way.

That's why BOTW / TOTK will never feel as real Zelda games to me. It's just too different, Prime 2 is a good sequel, Tropical Freeze is a good sequel, Majora's Mask is a good sequel... But BOTW is not a good sequel, it's just a reboot, something different, it doesn't feel like a Zelda game.

Anyway, about MP4 it looks like a new Prime game, if you love Metroid Prime this is just the best thing ever. I waited almost 20 years to live this moment. And the game looks beautiful, the music is great, the art direction is great... It was not a very good trailer, but it will be a 90+ meta game for sure.

The psychic power looks good, there can be a lot of ways to use it. And it's not like they revealed some of the core mechanics of this game yet (they barely talked about the space-time faults but didn't show anything about it). It will have big implications on the level-design obviously.

yes, no, yes and yes.

If it was first half they would have said so. 1st half ends in 3 months.
Well, that’s exactly my point, is that all signs seem to indicate they just are holding off on the release date until the switch 2 direct is over, So that’s why we got this odd 2025 window, even though that’s what they said last June. The boxart is final and was shown afterwards in the press release, even though box art usually doesn’t come until the game is only a couple months out. I think literally the reason they’re not announcing it for May or June is because the switch 2 direct hasn’t happened yet. There are no other dated first party games on the horizon of any consequence. (and yesterday’s showing didn’t solve that, notably) so that also makes me think as well that this is the one for summer. Speaking only of switch 1, of course.

This had better also be a Switch 2 launch title with massively upgraded visuals

I thought people were exaggerating when they said it looks like a PS3 game, then I watched this trailer and....

It looks like a PS3 game

Also apparently you need PSYCHIC POWERS to operate mechanisms and open doors LMAO
I think people are just misremembering how PS3 and 360 games actually looked. There was a big jump going from the PS2 era to the PS3, while the move to the PS4 was more refining and stabilizing things.

If they game was going for cell-shaded or some other artistic look, that would be fine. But from what was shown, it doesn't. The game has been in development for 8 years, with 6 years on the current iteration. Expectations are extremely high, but I don't believe it will be able to live up to them.

Looks like a significantly downgraded XONE game. Muddy textures, extremely simplified geometry, AO, shadows, effects, vegetation and all of this in absolutely atrocious resolution. I simply cannot imagine playing this on anything but a modern gaming PC at 4K.

Is it just me, or did the MP remasters look better than this? Really shocking for such an incredible developer with talent that has worked on games like Metroid Prime and Uncharted 1 and 2.

Few things, that narration was shite ‘And open…DOORS’ cool…..Also Viewros? Shit name. It looks incredibly safe quite frankly. Still looks good and Im sure it will be, but super super safe.

Ok maybe you're right. I'm going to get on the 'Switch 2 soon to be released bandwagon' starting ..... now.

It's not the devs problem, it's Nintendo problem of the past 20 years since Wii was released.

We all have seen, read and heard how devs are complaining about Series S (justifiably so), but has anyone ever imagined what it's like for Nintendo devs? It's 10 times worse for them cuz they can't really make the game shine and show what they are really capable of, so they downgrade everything to shit. DF also likes to praise ports and even 1st party games for how good they look for a console they were made for, but did they ever think of devs who had to compromise a shit ton of their vision of the game, its visual aspects and how bad, frustrated and angry they are about it (cuz I'm sure they are anything but happy)?

Fuckin' hell man, thank fuck for PC, emulators and AI that can turn even ancient PS2 games into almost modern marvels, all of this is doing what nintendon't and never will, not the actual devs that simply can't do anything here.

Is this the trailer that was 'gonna blow everything else out of the water'?
Gameplay wise that looks stale as it could possibly be. The lack of creativity on show after a 15 year hiatus is damning imo.
I kinda like the art though, they've done a decent enough job considering the age of the tech it's running on.

Nah he's right IMO. It didn't feel like a Zelda game.

I still loved it just as much if not more than 95% of prior titles, but there's no doubt that it changed the formula a lot. It's like going from Silent Hill 2 to Shattered Memories. Still a great game, but really different from why I play the series.

Too much hate for this game, but the truth is the game looks amazing. Don't forget that is Switch, a console from 2017 with hardware of 2015. Maybe you think that's not an excuse, but it is. The game looks phenomenal and the art desing and level design is above graphics. Examples of that are too many to be acounted.

It's just LoZ: Fallout Edition.

I'd put BotW and TotK in their own timeline since it's either a reboot or a retelling of the Zelda Legend since so many factors are similar to how OoT pans out. Compared to other Zelda games I did not find the lore very interesting.

kind of disappointed...given how they restarted development I expected them to come out with something groundbreaking gameplay wise..instead it looked very by the book and the psychic powers look boring and rigid as hell
Honestly, this was the part that had me worried, not the graphics. If they don't also have smooth gameplay/combat implications (beyond steering energy blasts as if they were batarangs) it's going to be a huge missed opportunity all-round. Psychic shooters can be really cool from a gameplay perspective. Here's hoping Retro doesn't let us down.

Okay c’mon, that trailer was clearly aimed at people who have never really played a Prime game, which makes sense, since everyone who has played a Prime game will probably already be buying 4.

This is Retro Studios we’re talking about. They’ve literally never missed before. I have zero doubt that this game will be incredible.

yeah, i don't think that part showed particularly well.

that said, this is the dev that flawlessly translated 2d metroidvania to 3d (arguably the most impressive 2d>3d transition ever imo), so i'm not super concerned.

Looks like there’s some potential evidence that Nintendo will have certain Switch 1 games have a forward-compatible “Switch 2 Edition” upgrade based off of some of the wording on their site. Hopefully this means that Prime 4 will get a Switch 2 glow-up, which would likely mean it’s a Switch 2 launch title. And that would make sense, since we still haven’t gotten a definitive date yet.

No date but also no 2 & 3 is doubly annoying.
After releasing MP1 remaster two years ago, what a major dick move it would be to release MP4 without 2 and 3 first. I have a feeling that's what they're going to do, though.

Man, FUCK YOU, Nintendo! If you do that.

If 2&3 looked as good as 1, they may not have fancied the comparison.

Assuming Prime 4 gets a Switch 2 version, maybe the 2 and 3 ports will be Switch 2 exclusives. That'd be a fun thread to read. XD

Was never going to be about a display of graphical prowess. Objectively, it doesn't look bad - and if you think it does, that's definitely an opinion.

It was always about gameplay and I'd be surprised if it didn't play well.

Still feels a little long in the tooth to me.

I said that the Metroid Prime remake looked better than this. That is defiantly the dev, if this holds up at launch.

I said that the Metroid Prime remake looked better than this.
And I agree, it does look better. The issue here is that Prime 4 has much better and more detailed vistas with volumetric fog, lighting and probably has bigger levels and scope overall with much more stuff in them.

Don't forget, Prime 1 had simple level design, much less complex geometry, very simple if none existent vistas which weren't even modeled in full 3D, very simple lighting system, very little foliage and the first Switch could easily handle it at 1080p 60. So upgrading its visuals to the level it was done in the remastered version is probably within the first Switch budget and not that demanding, cuz the original game is so old.

That is defiantly the dev, if this holds up at launch.
It got me thinkin', how do we know that they showed the Switch 2 version? I mean, I've zero faith in Nintendo when it comes to releasing better consoles, but... I can see the first Switch running the game in such a bad state, but surely the new one can do better? So yeah, I don't think we're looking at the Switch 2 version here, let's wait.

The 3D Metroid games are a shameful blind-spot in my gaming experiences. I was never convinced that the transformation to the third dimension added anything to the series.

But seeing how excited people are for this one I might give the remake of the first one a spin.

You have absolutely no understanding of graphics. Utterly clueless.

I probably understand it much better than you. What was wrong about my statement? A game with more expansive and detailed environments will require more memory, thus leaving less memory for textures (for example).

The only thing you apparently understand about graphics is how to write the word itself. My God.

Man, memory/rose tinted glasses does a lot for old gen releases. I remember Uncharted and Killzone looking WAY better than that.

EDIT: Sorry for the double-post.
In motion, and during gameplay, I think games from that era can still look really good. You really can't judge a game based solely on screenshots, because you aren't examining every little detail in the heat of the action.
