How could we have known what horrors slumbered in that place? God forgive us for we have awoken the many-angled ones.

Because the words 'wake up' are said three times during the story, it's supposed to imply you are in that state. I believe.
Ah, OK, that's quite clever.

And I'm quite dozy this morning.

I'll see if I can fit a horror story I know into two sentences:

"A young girl, whose closely attached dog slept under her bed, would stick her hand over the side on a night and have him lick it so she knew he was safe. One night, she is awoken to a dripping from the bathroom, and when she enters, she finds her dog hanging gutted, with the words "humans lick too" scrawled on the walls in blood."

A bit of a stretch to fit it into two sentences, but I loved that story as a kid!

The man sat down with a gun to his head, contemplating suicide. Then, remembering Half Life 3 has yet to be announced, put the gun down and waited, and waited, and waited; until he was nothing but dust.

Each night, father fills me with dread, as he sits at the foot of my bed.

I don't mind that he speaks in gibbers and squeaks, but for fifteen years he's been dead.

It's okay! Mine was cliche and a bit terrible and possibly no one got it. :p I am blaming the painkillers, as I do all things currently.
One more, that is probably well known on here, but eh:

"After a huntsman caught in a storm deep in the woods late at night seeks refuge in a small cabin, he tries his best to ignore the tortured faces of the portraits hung on each wall of the tiny room. The following morning, he is awoken by beautiful birdsong and the beaming sunlight pouring in through the windows."

After he finished washing it in the sink, he put it in tupperware, and placed it in the back of the fridge. As the months passed, he would look at it from time-to-time and smile.

He awoke to what sounded like chimes, or a phone ringing in the distance, but his frozen limbs refused to respond to the dictates of his increasingly panicked mind. The indistinct shadow that had been looming in the corner of his vision leaned heavily upon his chest, as a growing cacophony of whispers hissed under the door.

As the lone hiker strode through the sunny autumn forest, the falling leaves formed a silhouette in front of him.

The figure took two steps towards him, and then the sky went black.

Being an outsider had never really troubled her. But even she couldn't deny the unease and crippling loneliness she felt on what should've been a blissful summer's day, when she realised with a fright that she cast no shadow.

They asked her over and over where it touched her. But she couldn't answer, because the doll was too human.

I really like this.

The smell and the aroma coming from the kitchen excited everyone waiting in the den. "If you want seconds I can easily grab one or two from the nursery," bellowed our hostess.

For years I spent my life savings on sleep therapists, psychologists, hypnotists - anyone who could help me erase the same dream I suffered through every single night: one by one, each tooth in my mouth dropping out of my gums, the nerve roots left exposed and shaking through raw screams, like the twigs of fallen acorns.

And in the end, all it took was a five dollar pair of pliers.

The depraved serial killer teleported behind the girl as she reached the front door

But she was a level 15 mystic swordsman with "return damage" and "2x damage" skills equipped, so he gibbed himself when he stabbed her

Anxious at the thought of her boyfriend proposing to her, Yaniqua agreed to stay in a hotel in the downtown. A bit too late to discover she would be meeting Jerry Springer.

lol! Too perfect.

So he obviously wasn't alone. What so scary about that?

Or: What's more scary? Being the last man left on Earth or discovering that you're not the last man left on Earth? Surely some company would be appreciated.

Every station on the dial was playing "Butt town" by Iggy Pop. It had been that way for as long as anyone could remember.

that's what I meant. I would be ecstatic to hear someone knock on my door if I had assumed everyone is dead.

Read something along these lines once:

Succumbing to loneliness and despair, the sole survivor of the global plague threw himself from the roof of his apartment block. As he fell, he heard the sound of a phone ringing.

The curious boy looked through the keyhole and saw a dark red blur, to his surprise.
When he asked who lived in the quiet room upstairs, the receptionists answered "strange people with bloody red eyes".

An abridged version of a story I liked. I also tried to make it rhyme. :p

I think this is more a "Gotchya!" kind of thing than a true "horror" story. The last "man" not person on earth hears the door knock. There can still be plenty of lovely ladies for him. ;)

A man is driving with his son and gets in a terrible car accident. The man dies at the scene but when arriving at the hospital, the doctor says "I can't work on this boy...he's my son..."
