Ubisoft launches live blog to address AC Unity issues, next update detailed

The launch was a clusterfuck, but the live blog updates, having two more patches lined up, acknowledging and identifying pretty much all the issues immediately - these are good things.

Frankly, I'd like to see this more often. Not like there haven't been loads of games in the past with big issues and we haven't at times had to wait frustratingly long for any action to be taken or for the issues to be acknowledged at all.

All this must be evidence of some serious panic stations over at Ubisoft, though. I think they got the message finally.

Honestly though, I doubt they would have gotten the message and responded so quick if it didn't hit their share price. If their bottom line wasn't affected, we probably would have heard "WHOOPS SORRY LMAO, we'll patch someday and do better next time. We pinky swear!".

Some people say that share price thing wasn't really related, but it could be. I think it was a combination of everything - bad press, bad reviews, glitch memes galore.

I may be missing it but I still haven't seen an apology from Ubisoft.

the fact they fixed the micro transactions first proves to me they don't give a damn about the consumer.

I suppose someone has to pay for her face lift though...

Disagree. They knew of these issues before hand (see previews before the game launch). They just release a broken product and hope people just accept it. Didn't work like the planned just like Unity

You would think that the list of issues that they're fixing would be enough for any sane company to delay their game until it was working properly, but not Ubisoft. Oh well. I already returned my copy so I'm out. Thanks for nothing.

Should have been fixed before the game was released to be frank, but the fact that they're openly communicating with the consumers letting us know what they're working on should be praised. The fact that they are working on improving the performance is king in itself.
At least you now all know that they are doing something.

You don't know that. It's highly unlikely that they didn't know about some of the issues, but at the same time you do realize that there are loads of hardware configurations out there don't you? Sure. It's 2014 and we're using standardized software and hardware, but you can't test your software against every possible config. If you on the other hand have the recommended specs and it still bugs the fuck out they should be put to shame.

That doesn't explain the issues on the consoles though, that's 2 totally standardized configurations, that are having framerate issues, pop-ins etc. They absolutely knew they were releasing a broken product.

I wasn't aware that the xbox one and ps4 have several hardware variation out there. I should have gotten the ps4 with 16GB of ram, i7 processor and a Titan graffic card

Completely agree.

It's a shame as this is a great game covered in shitty bugs and technical issues.

Patch 2 Progress Update

Yesterday, we let you know that we were working on our next update, which we’re calling Patch 2. Our team has been working non-stop to get the patch ready, and today we can tell you that we are currently wrapping up this update. We will be deploying it as soon as possible.

As noted in yesterday’s post, this patch should mitigate the following bugs on all platforms:

Arno falling through the ground.
Game crashing when joining a co-op session.
Arno getting caught inside of hay carts.
Delay in reaching the main menu screen at game start.

Note, the PC version of Patch Two will include a number of additional fixes, including graphical problems, such as flickering issues with nVidia SLI and AMD CrossFire configurations and improved performance in cinematic mode on low HW configurations, among others.

Full patch notes for each platform will be provided once the update is released. Once we know an exact timeframe, which will likely be different for the PC and console versions, we will post it here.

As always, post your comments here or click over to the forums to discuss this post in more detail.

Well woopty-fucking-doo! Obviously I was talking about the PC-version.

I suppose someone has to pay for her face lift though...

That's not really fair. As others have said, if people are purchasing stuff with real money in game then not receiving what they bought, that's a HUGE issue. And it's also probably easier to fix than the graphics, glitches, and frame rate issues.

Yeah, I understand this, it's obviously a serious problem if people are paying money and not getting their UbiBucks.

Still though, it's pretty tactless of them.

Too little, too late.

And the issue is: people are falling for microtransactions on a 60€ game and legitimating them.

I wonder how much that Initiates/companion app integration pays off for them. If it really does cause performance issues it can't be worth all the extra effort to fix.

Well to be fair, more people have paid $60+ (than those who bought things with helix), and haven't received what they bought (a working game).

These issues were LONG indentified, well before release. They knew what they were giving us and gave it to us anyway.

THANK GOD Batman was delayed. After seeing this shitfest I'll never complain about a reasonable delay again.

Eh from what I can see the Helix stuff is just a way to avoid the grind that has been in every AC game. It's a completely optional monetized cheat code, doesn't affect the base game at all (other than Helix bugs getting prioritzed over FALLING THROUGH FLOOR NIGHTMARE FUEL of course) so I got no problem with that.

To be fair, this is a high-priority issue. If any money was lost during these transactions, it could lead to potential lawsuits on top of all the other problems.

I don't know who and why would want to buy credits in this game though.

The real question is why would they design a system that can lead to this particular kind of disaster? Clearly, they have no quality control over their game. They should have multiple security avenues for microtransactions and it's quite clear they've noticed the problem before it can REALLY get out of hand.

Priority is out wack with this company. I can't believe they can be so daring especially with their golden goose franchise.

Oh good Lord.

I wonder if Amancio is gonna stick around at Ubi now.

Point is that behind all the issues the game is great, it was just released unoptimized and full of glitches.
So I'm not sure if the fault here is mainly on the director. He even stated that optimization makes the difference between a good and a great game. They surely had a discussion about how the game was not ready since it was delayed.
The mistake was when they settled for just two extra weeks with further patches after launch. They thought they could run away with that instead it backfired.

Its too late now Ubisoft. You dun goofed.

They probably should have released Rogue on PS4 and XB1 this year and delayed Unity to next holiday season. I mean... releasing two new games in the same franchise at the same time? Who does that? Are they that greedy?
Yes

Slow down with the greed idea. Everyone knows Rogue is like Liberation and is a spinoff that was never going to get them the sales of something like Unity. They were under pressure to get a hit out this winter and Unity had the most buzz of all. They should have delayed Unity more, but no way is releasing a last gen spinoff a greedy idea.

Basically if you buy an AAA game from Ubi or EA at launch, you're part of the official Beta program for a couple of months until a few patches later when the game might or might not be at a presentable state. Coolio.

Unity sales must be disappointing. How long until we have NPD numbers?

In any case, it doesn't take Nostradamus to predict this game will be available for $20 in 3 months. $10 used within 3-5 months. Ubi lost me as a customer permanently, so I'm looking forward to picking it up pre-owned.

Yeah, I actually heard pretty good reason for this being top priority at reddit forgot what the dude said but i can see why it's number one on the list, i know it'll have a echo shit effect though.

So their whole suggestion about taking the game offline to solve framerate issues seems to indicate that they view the framerate issues as the inexplicable drops to single digits and not as the problems with the game's consistently sub 30fps or sub 20fps issues. Which means that it seems likely that they'll fix the single frame stutter but leave in the cinematic 18fps. I would be pleasantly surprised if wrong.

I participated in the Buy 2 get 1 free deal at Target today. Initially, I planned on buying Shadows of Mordor and AC Unity, along with another full priced game to be traded in for LittleBigPlanet 3 on Tuesday. Because of the myriad of technical issues (along with lukewarm critical reception), I chose to get The Evil Within instead. I'm holding off on playing TEW for as long as I can still trade it in in case all of the meaningful bugs get fixed in Unity, but I will admit that while it is ridiculous that the game shipped in the state it did I do commend on Ubisoft doing what I've wanted so many other companies to do in the past - communicate with the community quickly and continuously.

As much as this debacle sullies Ubisoft's reputation with me, I at least feel like they are trying to earn back as much trust as they can. That is worth something.

Kinda off topic, but when you trade in your third game, you'll still have to pay 20 bucks more for LBP3. You'll see that the return value for all three games are 39.99 each.

This is actually a fun game. I hope they fully fix the framerate. The last patch improved it, but at times the framerate gets horrible.

Patch 3 news

Looks like they're taking this pretty seriously. Glad they're fixing it.

Preview of Patch 3

With Patch 2 live for PS4 and PC—and, as of this writing, with the Xbox One version in the pipeline—we want to start sharing a bit about what we're working on for the next major update, Patch 3. As compared to the previous patch, Patch 3 is going to be larger in scope, addressing a number of bugs in the areas where you’re telling us you're having the most problems.

The list of specific fixes is not yet final, but the categories that we’re focusing on include:

Gameplay: this includes bugs like Arno getting stuck on certain areas of the map (including a few more hay carts), problems with getting into/out of cover, character animation bugs, and general camera problems
AI & Crowd: in this category are problems with NPC animations, crowd events, and crowd stations, NPC navigation issues, as well as bugs related to NPCs detecting Arno’s activities in various situations
Matchmaking & Connectivity: this covers a number of issues related to co-op play, including bugs with joining games in-progress and problems that happen during host migration
Menus & HUD: fixes in this category will address missing details in certain menus, problems with some of the mission objective and co-op update pop-ups, localization inconsistencies, as well as some of the issues with menus and pop-ups overlapping each other
General Stability: this includes fixes for a number of crash situations we've identified in both campaign and co-op modes.
Again, while the ultimate list of fixes for Patch 3 isn’t finalized yet, it will be soon. Part of what we want to do at this point is balance the competing desires to get as much as we can into the patch with getting it out quickly. Once we’ve locked down exactly what will be in Patch 3, we will update you again with a more specific set of patch notes. This next patch won't solve every problem, but we're expecting that it will dramatically improve your experience.

We are also investigating various performance issues including framerate drops, and are looking into how we can address them. We’ll tell you more about our progress on that topic in the coming days.

Thanks again for your patience and your passion. Please continue to share your thoughts and feedback in the comments below and in the forums, and make sure you’re submitting your problems to our support site!
