Ubisoft prepares its response with Electronic Arts
Ubisoft prepares its defense against American Electronic Arts, who collected nearly 20% of his capital. According to Echoes', the French family group would seek to convince its shareholders not to let itself allure by the offensive of EA.

"With the menu of the conversations: to convince not to let itself allure " by the American, the Echoes indicate, which specify that " the reinforcement of the Guillemot family within the capital of the group appears among the many options studied by Ubisoft ".

Currently, the Guillemot brothers hold 17,5% of the capital and 26,5% of the voting rights. In addition to EA, the different main thing shareholder is the Case of the Deposits (6%).

looks like a hostile takeover of Ubi would be VERY expensive for EA.

Im sure EA would love to add the good people at Ubi Montreal to the collective.

the rest ? dead weight...

Why do you think it's trying to build a dev team here in montreal?

The Talent pool here is amazing.

Yeah, Montreal is filled with people who are capable of making good videogames, isn't it? I heard that like 99% of the population can make a good videogame.

NOT A COINCIDENCE THAT UBI SOFT'S BEST TEAM IS THERE, NO SIREE

UBI does a good job of getting sequels out on a yearly basis on their own. EA buy out wouldn't change this. We came close to getting two Splinter Cell games within 6 months. I don't remember EA ever doing something that drastic. And we shouldn't forget about Prince of Persia I'm sure PoP3 will be out next November.

well it's not like UBI isn't "Milking" their more successful franchises right now ....

two 007 games this year. Fuck EA, Go UBI make em pay and bleed.

So Warrior Within tanked? Or does this mean UBI is actually going to take longer than a year and not release a buggy mess this time? Color me shocked UBI is going to go with some polish with PoP3 I'm impressed. I do like Warrior Within, but I've hit some nasty bugs early on and some other aspects could be fleshed out better within the gameplay. The series deserves better than a one year rush job.

BTW my comments before weren't intended to suggest I endorse this hostile takeover. I don't.

12/29/2004 - Declaration of the Board of Directors

Paris, France - December 29, 2004 - In light of recent news spread by the press, Ubisoft's Board of Directors reiterates that, in the absence of information from the company Electronic Arts regarding its intentions, the latter's acquisition of 19.9% of the group's capital is unsolicited and currently considered as hostile.

Moreover, it states that there are no negotiations between the two parties at present.

I hope this doesn't end the same way the Oracle/Peoplesoft hostile takeover did.

:-(

EA needs more talent and more successful IPs. Medal of Honor took a major hit in the last couple of years, so did Bond. The only successful IP outside of sports is Need for Speed and how long can they milk it? I suspect Ubi will be part of EA soon, and probably one or two of the prominent independent studios like Lionhead, Pandemic, Bioware, or even id or valve.

Haha, the Guillemot bros are damn cool. They never are shy on giving straight feedback on how things should be done properly and have a wicked business sense as well.

A merger with EA makes good sense and they must know it, my bet is on them trying to work on a merger instead of buyout, done with a deal that gives them a nice share of EA, too. Win-win.

Lionhead will never go to EA after what happened with Bullfrog. Are you even aware of the history behind Lionhead?

Pandemic will never go to EA after EA tried to fuck them over Mercenaries. EA tried to take the IP from Pandemic and to save themselves from being assimilated into the EA Collective they fled to Lucasarts with the title.

Bioware is too close to Microsoft for EA to touch them.

id has a great relationship with Activision, EA doesn't have a chance.

Valve is the most successful indy developer on the planet. They don't need EA.

Neither the French or Dutch have a history of doing well when being invaded (I'm part French and Dutch so don't get all offended)...

Everyone knows this type of consolidation is gonna happen despite it being a detriment to gaming variety. I can only hope some Japanese houses have the good sense to hook up: Nintendo/Capcom/Namco etc. I'm not that big on Western corps. They can rot under EA's banner.

If EA can accelerate Ubisoft's sequelitis, it would be a gargantuan accomplishment.

What do you think the Criterion acquisition is all about? They get some nice IPs, but they also control Renderware. If they take out one or two of those studios, they don't just acquire some nice IPs, but also hurt their competition in the process. The NFL exclusivity deal was not about getting Madden to be the top game, it already was, but they also wanted to crush Visual Concepts out of business. Ubisoft share might not be about taking control of Ubi as much as to block someone else from acquiring them. EA will use its money over the next year or two not only to acquire new content but also to drive its competitors out of business or into total submission.

I cant wait until EA buys out Ubi, closes all their studios, opens up EA Paris and moves the rest to EA montreal... then runs off all the talent, pays the remaining members shit and runs all of their IP's into the ground.

And hey, if this doesnt work, EA could allways negotiate with the Iranian government to get exclusive rights to the phrase "Prince of Persia" and sue the shit out of Ubi for copyright infringement. I suspect the heads of EA would get along swimmingly with the Iranian mulahs.

How the fuck is that a response to my post where I detailed why the companies you named wouldn't sell to EA?

You know something, I think I may have figured the one useful thing about EA. Release dates, as in EA seems to be the only company around that can actually provide a concrete release date for a game of theirs and actually follow up on it.

well yeah, but thats because they will ship a game without balancing gameplay, locking a frame rate, fixing bugs or you know making the game fun. Its easy to get something out on time if you dont care about the quality.

black arrow & island thunder were "Expansion packs" and weren't full priced games. I agree that they're milking Splinter cell a bit too much though.. still it's a drop in the ocean compared to the milking that goes on at EA.
