UFC 141 |OT| Lesnar vs. Overeem

ppl are deathly afraid to go down with nate. melvin, gray, and now cowboy wanted no piece of him on the ground when all 3 had plenty of opportunities to follow him to the ground. ppl just dislike the diaz bros for their thuggish demeanor, but both are among the most exciting guys in mma, and have some of the best boxing in the sport.

Despite a short and dominating fight, Overeem was breathing very hard, during his post-fight interview. If anyone is going to beat him, his cardio will be a key weakness. JDS would be smart, to use guerilla tactics for the first few rounds, draining Reem's stamina.

I noticed that too, but not like Carwin's though.

Maybe if Brock made it to the 2nd round he might have a chance.

But highly doubtful.

hettes was the best part of the night for me. going to be really interesting seeing him matched up against a real fighter

I cannot believe people actually though Lesnar stood a chance...lol

Overeem is better in every way...it's not even fair to put them together.

Disappointing, though predicted, that Overeem wants to take a long break before his next fight. Aiming to mid summer after a two minute fight, what the fuck? Hope the UFC has some balls to make him fight, enough people legitimately injured already. JDS spoke how he's ready to train 100% in around 10 days.

dem joshu fought in a catch wrestling match on that dream card last night. i think they are finishing the GP sometime early in 2012, then he should be in the UFC.

Cardio? Wrestling...? are you just regurgitating what Frank Mir said before the fight? He said the exact same thing "cardio and wrestling"...hmm...

EDIT found the article: Frank Mir: Alistair Overeem’s cardio is going to 'suck' against Brock Lesnar

I'm not trying to say that Brock is a better fighter because of those things. Just that there are things he does better than Overeem and wrestling is obviously one of them. If you want to explain how Overeem has better wrestling than Brock then I'd love to hear that. I would give Brock the cardio advantage too since he is naturally that size wheras Overeem isn't.

If Lesnar had won people would be coming out of nowhere to say that was inevitable. This is the first fight where Brock really looked terrible. Even against Cain, he looked good until he got rocked. No one knew what would happen; a lot depended on what condition both fighters were in that night, and who was able to dictate the style. No fighter at this level is just so much better that they can't lose. Brock looked bad from the beginning and clearly wasn't the same fighter as he had been before.

Do people also think Cowboy had no chance against Nate? He got fucked up, but on a different night he could have won. Nate got him to play his game.

Anyone else think Fedor isn't really "washed up"..?

He looks the same as ever to me.

I think there is quite a few guys in the top 10 he would take out easy.

I think if Fedor got in a good camp and cut down to 205 he could do pretty well. He is getting up there in age though so if he is going to do something it needs to be soon. I don't think he is actually that interested in being the best though, just wants to make good money for his family which I guess I can understand.

honestly it's hard to gauge anything when you are crushing cans. maybe he rolls up 3 or 4 more wins against subpar competition, he will have a huge overeem style hype train.

but i do agree that he can probably beat guys like nog, country, mir, hunt, etc. i don't think he trains seriously enough anymore to fight with the top dogs like JDS etc.

Fedor doesn't give a fuck anymore. That's why things are the way they are. He stopped giving a fuck in 2007. If he had the same hunger that he had back then, yeah, he'd have no problems with a lot of these guys. He wouldn't be the best anymore, but he wouldn't look washed-up either.
And his management is terribad. The Hendo fight is a joke. If there was ever any doubts that the old Fedor doesn't exist any longer, that fight squashed them. Pathetic.

Money Fedor is worst Fedor.

Here is what I envision for the next fights for the winners and losers:

Overeem v JDS
Diaz v Stout/Tavares
Hendricks v Ellenberger/Sanchez
Gustafsson v Stephan Bonnar or Forrest Griffin
Hettes v Nunes
Pearson v Chan-Sung Jung
Kim v Neer/Ludwig

Cerrone v Jeremy Stephens
Fitch v Dan Hardy
Matyushenko v Shogun Rua
Phan v Junior Assuncao

not that one. Watch The Reem and you'll see her.

My God.

I'm sorry for quoting an image a few pages back, but this image alone got my stomach to turn. I saw it live, but this picture perfectly showed how powerful that kick was.

That's the thing though, Overeem has so many more ways to win the fight. Trust me, he's not getting flash KO'd like Cain. People talk crap about his chin, but he's never been flash KO'd, even by powerful strikers who knock people out with one punch (Lidell, Shogun, Hari), he was finished by volume strikes. If Overeem starts losing his stand up, I guaran-damn-tee it, he will clinch up and ragdoll JDS, possibly pounding him out or submitting him.

Overeem is not the same guy from his 205 days. He didn't only improve his physique and technical abilities, his fight IQ has gone way up. He's a very intelligent fighter. Before this fight people were doubting his ability striking with wrestlers and smaller gloves, that his style of striking in K-1 where he covers up with the big gloves wouldn't work, etc. that he has zero head movement.. What did he do in his fight? He kept his hands low, wide stance to be ready for the shot, avoided all of Brock's strikes (except for the grazing jab) with head movement.

He was wary of Werdum on the ground, even though he had top position multiple times. He won't be scared to go to the ground with JDS. He's just going to be too much for him.

It would be fun if he went lumberjack on him en lowkicked his way to the win.

Thought I read after the Strikeforce GP, there would be one more fight at heavyweight to defend the title. So that'd lessen the chances we see Barnett in the UFC in 2012.

Thoroughly happy with this card.

Hettes is going to be a cat to watch for me. I was convinced he was too green for Nam Phan and that Phan would eek out a decision, but shit-on-me, Hetters gets two 10-8 rounds. Fucking brutal.

Sad to see the Janitor lose, even though I picked Gustafsson. If you have to lose to two people in the past seven fights, Jon Jones and Gustafsson aren't that shameful to lose to. Though walking into a jab kind of stinks.

Fitch v. Hendricks. I'm glad I was wrong here. War Hendricks. Long live the beard and future Welterwight champion. Pit this guy against Diaz when he wins and we'll see Hendricks beat GSP like it was nothing.

Speaking of Diaz, his little brother sure can scrap. Cerrone looked like an amateur, I've never seen him so bad, but if I learned anything about Cowboy it's that he can take a punch to the face and stay standing. Or a hundred in this case. Yacobod, if you are reading this I'm eating crow for dinner.

As for the title fight - I was ecstatic. THE REEM is the new face of the UFC HW division. And if you're still reading this yacobod, don't forget that. I haven't read if you've relegated Lesnar to Can status but haters have been doing this left and right all night and all morning. If Lesnar was a can then the HW division is truly five men deep.

All in all one of the best cards of the year. I still give top nods to Edgar v. Maynard III.

no i don't think he's a can. guy deserves credit for coming back from 2 bouts of diverticulitis and having his colon removed to come back and fight in the octagon against top competition. excuses are excuses, but he got in and fought so you have to assume he was 100% for the bout. i picked wrong, shit happens.

The worst part is the last right have that Reem throws...the rest he is just looking to stop the fight and when it looks like Mazagati is going to let it go he noticeable adjust the right hand to go under Brocks turtle guard in order to show "hey, I could kill this man if I wanted to...sop the fight".

Vicious.

That's one reason I respect Reem. He knew the fight was over and wanted to stop. That punch to the stomach was just like you said him telling the ref to just call it. His last couple of punches to the head were basically pitter pats.

This is the look of a fighter that got his but kicked for 2 rounds, and has accepted that he is going to get beat up for another 5 minutes.

Was a pro wrestling match. Not seen in yet but from what I have read the Japanese were impressed with what barnett can do in pro wrestling.

Would love to see new japan pro wrestling sign josh barnett again!!!

It's the same girl.

The Barnett pro wrestling match was one of the highlights of that show. Never seen Josh wrassle before but he looked good.

That was hilarious. Talk about having nothing left. Understandable though given his getting his ass kicked for the entire fight up to that point. The first minute where he just basically let himself be repeatedly punched in the face without even moving his head an inch, and where he tried to box? Less understandable.

It was way better than that awkward fake mma Sylvia match. Too bad he finished the match with a brainbuster instead of the sit-down powerbomb though.

Yea, seeing Timmy and JLB wrestle each other just reminds you of what a great worker Josh is since he carried both of them to pretty great matches. Josh would have owned puroresu if he had been around during the UWFi era.

I dunno but Overeem reminds me of a evil boss from old Kung Fu flicks. Mannerisms just like Bolo Yeung from Bloodsport. He has this smile and bravado like I'm the best and I going kick your fucking ass.

Brock had the typical liver kick reaction too. He looked like he took the strike well and then goes down a few seconds later. Bas would be proud!

I know both Diaz brothers are known for their boxing, but I was still really impressed with the boxing that Nate displayed in the first round. He really busted up Cerrone and I think it really took him by surprise! Nates boxing doesn't even look that impressive but both Diaz brothers just pick people apart. its so impressive that it makes me want to go back to hitting my bag and changing the techniques I used to use in the hope of attempting to mirror their style :)
I may not like all of their antics but the Diaz brothers are inspiring for me, Conduit is screwed lol

Hmm, I've never gotten that from him. Whenever I see him smile, it looks like he is enjoying himself and happy.
Then again, I am one of the people who thinks Jon Jones is a complete ass, so take that however I guess. I might not be good at identifying things.

the best way to mess with someone with an avatar bet is to make it look like that's really their avatar. you want non-mma gaffers to actually think yaco is a fan of that guy on the men's magazine covers, otherwise it's just sort of obvious he lost a goofy bet
