Ugliest games

Battleborn has one of the most atrocious art styles in gaming. Look at that shit.

Just, look at it.

There isn't a single female character in that game (MAYBE barring that one hacker lady you can take on a heist) who isn't a negative existing REAL WORLD stereotype of women - vapid, irritating, nagging, selfish, self-absorbed, manipulative, stupid etc.

Tanisha, Franklin's ex-girlfriend, seemed like a solid character. She's very much like Kate from GTA4 in the sense that she's actually a source of good in a world that's completely shit.

The male characters might be pieces of shit but there is actual DEPTH to them - we are given looks at their motivation, their feelings, etc, [/b]while the women are consistently viewed as getting in the way of everything. Women exist only in the GTA V world to be sex objects or to irritate the player. This article about the portrayal of sex workers in the game for example is good.

The only characters that have real depth are Michael, Franklin, and Trevor and that's because they're the playable characters and you see them a lot more often. So it's not a male or female thing, it's a lead character thing.

Spyro 3 has some of the ugliest are direction my eyes have had the displeasure of seeing.

It's the only Spyro from the PS days I've really seen, so I'm not sure if they are all this disgusting.

Spyro 3 definitely took things too far, but I thoroughly enjoyed Spyro 1 and 2's art direction.

The only good one is the first one. After that I don't know what happened.

Are you guys being serious? All 3 Spyro PS1 games used the same engine and aesthetics. If you really think thats some of the "ugliest are direction my eyes have had the displeasure of seeing", you really need to play more games.

Also, I can't even tell if I'm being messed with here.

As for visuals, I'm going to put forward Shadow of Mordor on PS360.

Disgusting tbh.
Not only does it look like that ^, it also runs like crap and has terrible LOD/pop-in. Shouldn't have bothered tbh.
I didn't know Mordor got an N64 version

I am now more interested in battleborn. I like the colors.

Now imagine this on a tiny, dark GBC screen that you can't see worth shit.

What makes this more inexplicable is that lessons from the Donkey Kong Land games should have prevented this.

Don't look at me, I'm defending PS1 Spyro. I just conceded that Spyro 3 went off of the cartoony deep end.

GTA V is a truly ugly game. The satire is of the lowest, more surface and juvenile quality and the misanthropic pervasive misogyny and stereotyping isn't clever. As GS said in their review, the game is "politically muddled and profoundly misogynistic." It's telling that gamers were so offended by this review that a petition was made to request the reviewer be fired. Blegh. The game is the definition of hateful fiction.

My later replies to avoid confusion:

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I don't agree with a word you say here. GTA V is gorgeous.

Hardcore 4x4 on the Saturn was pretty ugly. Framerate was abysmal too. And yet I still had fun with it!

Hopefully link and image works, on mobile...

Speaking of bad framerates in four wheel drive games, I always thought that Off-World Interceptor Extreme for the Saturn was pretty hard to look at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=72dCudAQE30

I remember renting this for my Saturn back in the day and I just couldn't stomach the look of it. This game was a port of a 3DO game, and it was on the PS1 too. But the Saturn port looked the worse of the bunch.

Also, Lucienne's Quest on the 3DO had some hideous looking 3D: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGrifTVMXeA

Someone should tell Gearbox that more colors doesn't mean better. I get that they're trying to do the Overwatch/TF2/whatever thing that's vivid and vibrant but this just looks like it has absolutely no art direction and they just threw everything in there because why not.

Kind of like the gameplay design of that game, honestly.

Demon's and the 1st Dark Souls both look like butt, too, imo.

Im replaying demons at the moment, the player character's animation and particularly their faces are unacceptable for a ps3 game. The female character is worse for some reason, they move like they just shit their pants.

Still love it though

Although OP's post was specifically referencing visuals, this is a great point. It's interesting (and telling) that conversations about ugliness steer clear of cultural and social values to focus on something less challenging like visual quality. If I'm not being totally cynical, I guess its because people are nervous and, in some instances, just don't know how to talk about social and cultural depictions in games--or, in the worst case, they take the discussion as a personal attack.

I'd add Manhunt (especially Manhunt 2)--a brutal, ugly game that really goes out of its way to make the player feel disgusted. Unlike a lot of FPSes that make fragging quick, stylish, and clean, I was impressed with how the motion controlled executions in Manhunt 2 try to expose the ugliness of torture and killing. Similarly, Spec Ops' white phosphorus sequence is incredibly ugly.

The colour palette is just overwhelming blinding. To go along with the marketing campaign of just throwing buzzwords into a blender. Esports, hobby grade, hero shooter, 360noscope.

Really disappointing beta even as someone who likes the Borderlands series.

Has Gearbox made a good game recently that isn't Borderlands? Can't think of one.
