[UK] Classic FM launching weekly radio series dedicated to video game music

Fourteen years ago, Classic FM became the first station to broadcast a weekly national radio programme dedicated to film music. Now, we’re launching the UK’s first weekly radio series dedicated to symphonic video game music. The six-week series will start on 22nd April and will run every Saturday from 9pm to 10pm.

Jessica Curry (The Chinese Room) will be the presenter.

So, I'm very, very (over) excited to announce that I'm going to be a new presenter on @ClassicFM!!! Presenting a show on video game music 🎶 https://t.co/dBiVa69XXw

Classic FM have had quite a bit of success when they had occasional "Saturday Night at the Movies" specials covering game music instead, I'm pleased they're taking one step further and really committing to it.

(For those who haven't been in the previous threads about the specials, they do stream online internationally with one week of catchup available)

Edit: I note in the first thread that you needed to input a UK postcode to get international streaming, it's possible the geoblock may have got harsher since.

Great stuff; Jessica Curry is really talented and the soundtrack to Everybody's Gone to the Rapture is fantastic. Classic FM do a really good job with their gaming soundtrack coverage, so I'm glad they're taking things further as well.

Anything that helps legitimise music written for games to the masses is excellent in my book. I will certainly be tuning in!

I remember from one of the threads about their previous shows that they can only play music that were released as soundtracks.

Hopefully all games can get a released soundtrack.

Next stop, a Prom!

(Okay, maybe a while away yet. But wouldn't it be incredible?)

I've been to Symphonic Fantasies at the Barbican and Distant Worlds at the Royal Albert Hall.

Both were brilliant. Great atmosphere compared a standard classical concert playing playing your standard classical, baroque, romatic etc. greats.
Super Jolly!

I think it wouldn't be hard to imagine at all.
One cool part of the proms is that you can usually line up on the day and get the standing tickets. If it was a video game concert, that queue is gonna be filled from morning. haha

Awesome, will listen! Jessica Curry is fantastic, love her work.

There's more? I had no idea. What else have they done and are any available online?

Since... 2011, I think? - they've occasionally given over their usual weekly show on film soundtracks to game soundtracks instead. They aren't available any more officially - their catchup only lasts a week - but there may be copies in the wild that were ripped at the time.

Edit: First reference I can find on the forum is to a show in November 2012

Edit2: Searching GAF for 'titles only' "Classic FM" shows up an awful lot of threads, and I'm pretty sure there were some links to rips in some of those. Have a search, you might get lucky.

Great news; I still have the last special recorded but it was over a year ago now, I think.

Glad to see Classic fm upping the ante.

The sad thing is that so much videogame music is amazing, but it has this stigma attached because it's videogames.

I'd rank the soundtrack to Shadow of the Colossus, Bloodborne or Halo 1 up with any classic movie soundtrack.

Absolutely, I'm convinced that it's the same phenomenon as "own brand" vs "name brand" products; in that they could be equally as good (in some cases the same) and yet fear of the unknown manifests as rejection.

I'm excited to see where video game music goes over the next decade, it seems to be where a lot of the talent is going!

Damn, I missed out! Thanks, I'll try and find em.

Cool. Tune in and support if you want to increase exposure for original compositions for videogames.

Funnily enough I listen to Classic FM a fair amount with a slight bias to their film coverage. Happy to add videogame compositions to that too.

Only ever used to listen to Classic FM by complete accident when scanning for pirate radio as a teenager haha. Definitely going to tune in for this though.

They've got a weekly classical music from the movies show. And for some weeks they did a video game special.
But I think there's a only weeks worth of catchup available online.

Here's a couple of threads on GAF, just search Classic FM, titles only:

Looks like they've made a book about video game music:

In 2016’s Classic FM Hall of Fame, Nobuo Uematsu’s Final Fantasy soundtrack reached number 17 while Yoko Shimomura ‘s Kingdom Hearts was number 30 on the list.

Here's their top soundtracks of 2016:

1. Abzu
2. Last Guardian
3. Unravel

Nice one, thanks mate!

Edit: love all the soundtracks they have on their top 10 that I've listened to including the top 3. But they're sadly missing the Bound Soundtrack, loved Henali's work on it...

Small reminder that this is due to start next Saturday (22nd April) at 9pm BST. The series is called High Score and as stated before is presented by Jessica Curry.

The first show will be showcasing the BAFTA Games award winners and nominees from 2017, including Abzu and The Last Guardian.

On 29th April, the focus will shift to heroes and heroines and will feature listener requests.

More details can be found here: http://www.classicfm.com/radio/shows-presenters/high-score/

By listener requests i hope it's from Twitter or something and not phone-in, i hate those parts of a show and usually turn off or forward to the next section.

It won't be phone-in will it? Even R6 are more ahead of the times than that i hope.

I don't believe it's phone-in. Their previous request only specials were mainly text and Twitter.

Woo-Hoo! I figured as much but thought i'd ask. I've been telling people about this show every time the thread is bumped so there's at least 4 people who will listen to the show :)

What game is this from? The first track 'Fast Forward', it won a BAFTA apparently.

Edit: Ah the game was Virginia, loved it. Abzu time!

Banner Saga 2 music is great, I've never played either. It would be great if they played some niche Grizzly Hills from WoW.

I remember them doing these things on Saturdays randomly and they were popular. Guess they turned it into a regular thing. Thanks for the bump!!!

It's nice of them to let me fill in a postcode to bypass the region locking. I like the idea of videogame music on normal radio. We mainstream now. :lol

Really great to hear the enthusiasm for video game music. I certainly didn't appreciate Titanfall 2 music when I played it, however this is an excellent way of revisiting and enjoying one component of video games in a different light (from a classical music buff perspective).
