Ultimate PS4 FAQ is live on PS Blog

Will PS4 support custom Dynamic Themes, as currently available on the PS3 system?
No, PS4 will not support Dynamic Themes as they currently exist on the PS3 system.

I feel like the wording on this is strange, " as they currently exist on the PS3" Does that mean a whole new type of theme system? Like, PS4 "Evolving Themes" or something like that. I don't read it as no themes at all, just not the current PS3 system of themes.

probably paid themes.

The ps3 fucking sucked as a media server, I can't get it to play shit anymore. People are just pissed they can't stream their pirated movies, it can still play Blu-rays people, buy your movies and TV shows.

I don't have much in digital movies (just a handful) but I have a shit ton of music. I also like to transfer/stream my 1080p videos and trailers I get off of Gamersyde and other site that my laptop simply can't handle. Not having that option really sucks.

PAL:

Will you offer digital pre-orders of PS4 launch titles via PS Store before the PS4 launch?
No in PAL Markets.

USA:

Will you offer digital pre-orders of PS4 launch titles via PS Store before the PS4 launch?
Yes, PS3 users can currently pre-order digital versions of a selection of PS4 launch titles including Knack and Warframe, both of which offer bonus content. Read here for more details.

Losing features always sucks, but I do wonder how many people actually used the media sharing functions of the PS3 or ever played an MP3 on their home console. I may be surprised and there were a lot of people, but it seems like a small issue to get outraged about in my opinion.

Is this a deal breaker for anyone who was interested in a PS4 as a gaming console primarily?

"fully cached" don't think it is implying the whole disc must be downloaded onto the drive.

I think that's exactly what it means.

I'm getting the sense that all games on both platforms fully install to the HDD. Sony is using the word "Cached" here, but they really mean "Installed", in the traditional sense that we are used to. I'm not sure why they are calling it Cached instead of Installed... maybe because now the game can be launched after a certain chunk of it is installed.

We'll still need to wait 5-10 minutes to start up a game for the first time... which will likely be anywhere from 5-10 gigs of the game... the remainder of the 40+ gigs will install while you play, so that you are not forced to wait a full hour to install a game, which, of course, would be unacceptable.

Some good stuff in the FAQ

Has DUALSHOCK 4′s internal motion sensor been upgraded since DUALSHOCK 3?

Yes, DUALSHOCK 4′s upgraded SIXAXIS motion sensor is noticeably more responsive compared to DUALSHOCK 3 in supported titles. For example, the PS4 edition of Flower features more responsive motion controls, enabling players to more easily guide flower petals. DUALSHOCK 4′s SIXAXIS motion sensor is even precise enough for text input. In this optional mode, PS4 users can “point” at different letters using the DUALSHOCK 4 controller to form words

Will Wireless Stereo Headset and PULSE wireless stereo headset – Elite Edition, which are currently sold for PS3, work on PS4 at launch in North America? What about other wireless headsets?
PS4 will support the Pulse Wireless Stereo Headset and Pulse Wireless Stereo Headset – Elite Edition following an upcoming PS4 system software update. Existing wireless headsets from third-party companies that use a Bluetooth connection will not be supported on PS4, though most USB headsets will be supported following PS4 system software update 1.50.

Will non PS Plus members be able to play free to play online games on PS4?
Will non PS Plus members be able to play free to play online games on PS4?

Certain titles built on a free-to-play model will not require PlayStation Plus for multiplayer functionality in North America. This list currently includes Blacklight Retribution, DC Universe Online, and War Frame in North America.

I would be more mad about the lack of support for External HDDs and basic bluetooth support.

Its clear that they need to make a lot of money back on controller/headset purchases.

Very similar to the Vita Memory situation where the margins needs to be made up elsewhere to cover the loss occured by selling the system below cost.

Its crappy but hey SONY is giving consumers a LOT more freedoms and choices than they have before.

You still are getting a great value compared to the competition from what I can tell

Yeah this was a chance to change that not drop it altogether. Just because you don't use it doesn't mean you shouldn't fight for your gaming brethren.

What are they going to say to the developers that make rhythm games like Audiosurf, sorry your can't "Ride your Music" on PS4, we don't allow MP3s to be stored on the HDD.

They will probably allow them to be downloaded in game for purchase or something.

This all smells like drm / anti piracy to me.

Or they could be features that were cut from launch and will come later.

My point was that I have ordered the same drive, and it's 9.5mm. We should be safe.

Oh sweet! My calculations are clearly wrong then.

I read up some more reviews on it and they say its 9.5 too, also the official seagates site says its 9.5

WHEW

Thanks

There is plenty of f2p games at launch.

Sony: Flower, Killzone: Shadow Fall, Knack, Resogun, Sound ShapesP

Third-Party: Angry Birds Star Wars, Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, Call of Duty: Ghosts, FIFA 14, Battlefield 4, Just Dance 2014, Injustice: Gods Among Us Ultimate Edition, Lego Marvel Super Heroes, Madden NFL 25, NBA 2k14P

Indies: Contrast, Pinball Arcade, super motherload, tiny brains.

I see no f2p.

1. Not allowing exports is understandable when developers don't want certain parts of a game spoiled by the recording feature.

2. There was no such thing as in-game soundtracks on the PS3 last gen which really makes the sudden outrage over this even more confusing. It's not a feature that is essential to playing your games. People are more pissed off about the fact that if you want music you have to pay for MU then not having it at all.

Developers can't stop people from using their own hardware, and they already announced the ability to limit what can be recorded at a hardware level. Sharing to Facebook still makes it public, it's just a pain in the ass to functionality that could make for arguably better free advertising like jackfrags is to BF4.

Also in-game soundtracks were in some games and the outcry for a OS standard was shouted from the rooftops. Scrapping it completely is stupid, they could have finally made it what it was always begged to be. That and some games use your music to add fresh gameplay. Look at SSX, they had a proprietary engine that used your music to manipulate gameplay, look at rhythm based indie games that let you "Ride Your Music" ala Audiosurf, they are basically giving a finger to a genre of games.

Umm

Probably more

Uh, they aren't forbidding games from supporting custom soundtracks, they just aren't doing this on the OS level.

#WEWANTDLNA!!!!!!

#WEWANTWALLPAPERSTOO

Next-gen is turning out to be all kinds of shite.

As a UK GAF'er it seems game prices are going to be screwed over too, nothing but bad news. The lightbar is very disappointing, its very noticeable when I played a demo, curious if it would happen in my home but not a big deal now I guess.

Don't really give two shits about background music or DLNA support. At least Sony are being honest about it though.

So honesty is now being defined as dropping news 2 weeks before launch? So technically, Microsoft has another 2 weeks before they can be considered dishonest.

I never thought I would say this , but..

PREORDER CANCELED

Basically 99 % of this is a downgrade compared to last gen. Sony, wtf are you thinking ?

Uh, they aren't forbidding games from supporting custom soundtracks, they just aren't doing this on the OS level.

the problem (according to the sort-of-ambiguous language) is that there is no way to get said files to your hard drive even if a game DOES support custom soundtracks.

The MP3 news is disheartening, but nothing to shout "preorder cancelled" at. I lived without it on my PS3, and rarely used it on my 360. The only real instance in which it'll suck for me is during arcade racing games (don't listen to music during sims).

Also confused about the lack of NFS:Rivals and F2P games on their list of games.

It's like $60 bucks a year right now and that's half the price of Spotify.

I can't get it for that price because I already have it for a year (that runs out next month). I tried to stack it when it was $41 for a year for + and they wouldn't let me since I'm already a sub. When that year is up my options are monthly or another year but, at full price, which now is $9.99/month.

Besides that it should be half the price of Spotify. It's about half as good.

EDIT: They recently added an option for current 1 year subs to get 3 more months for $3. That's a little better for me. For those who don't use it, it still sucks.

Man, there's some disappointing stuff in there and I only skimmed through.

Not being able to upload to YouTube is a real head-scratcher. Who the fuck uploads their gameplay to Facebook?

You should clarify that, as not supporting it on the OS level to the user is different than not doing it at the OS level at all. The latter would pretty much make it impossible for game devs to support it in-game on a closed system.

The phrasing was a bit murky, but didn't it mention that the featureset would be expanded in further updates?

Also, lol at the "preorder cancelled" people.

yeah, kind of not getting all of the pre-order cancelled stuff.. I mean this is pretty minor stuff that can ALL be changed down the line through software. It's not like we are talking compute units or RAM bandwidth here that's set in stone for the rest of the gen.

to each their own...

Wow, It's not going to put me off buying one, but damn Sony, you fucked up here.

No MP3 in addition to no CD's is crazy horse shit. No CD's, fine, but no Mp3's?
Oh, and you can't stream music either?

So they are basically saying, buy a MU sub, or get the fuck out if you want music. That is insane.
