Ultimate PS4 FAQ is live on PS Blog

So the vertical stand, pictured on the box, isn't even being released in America. Wow.

EDIT: I've never ordered anything from Amazon.co.uk before, but I'm about to try.

EDIT EDIT: Jeebus... one part of the FAQ reads like ONLY third party stands are coming out, and another part seems to indicate the Sony one is coming out, but actually I don't really know.

I need it to play video files. I use my PS3 to play movie files, mpeg4, xvid etc via USB stick. If PS4 can't do that I'll be royally pissed off. Anyone confirm whether it can or can't?

Not playing MP3s is stupid too.

I'm more interested in this too. My PS3 streams from my HD to watch stuff. ,mp3s just annoy me on general principle.

Really good F.A.Q.

Personally, I don't really do the custom soundtrack thing on my consoles (but I will use it on my Vita occasionally on the bus), as I like to hear the score the game developers and composers crafted for my gaming enjoyment.

As for streaming videos through media player? My PS3 isn't going anywhere, and if I recall, a lot of those features weren't there at launch either. I'm sure a lot of this functionality, based on user feedback, will be added later.

Currently, I just want the PS4 to launch functioning perfectly on the gaming side, since that's what I'm buying the thing for. I understand people's concerns, but truth told, playing MP3's, or using my PS4 as a media streamer is so far down the list of things I want to do with my device I can't even see it. It's like wanting every device you own to be able to run an SNES emulator; it's superfluous when so many other devices do the same thing.

I'm still playing games on my PS3, so that's staying hooked up to the TV, and won't be going anywhere any time soon.

A smooth launch. That's what I want. Extras like that will no doubt come in time, and like I said, I have quite a few other devices, from a laptop, to a Surface Pro, to a PS3, that does all of that stuff.

I'm sorry some people that really used that stuff more than me are upset, however. Still, I'm sure it will be addressed in time. Ditto for the Xbox ONE, while we're at it.

It's shitty, what does EU / JP / AU (EU) PSN+ members get? Besides more expensive retail and digital games?

Resogun is mentioned on the EU blog along with Contrast. Just check the regional blog for wherever you are.

Shu's tweet doesn't fill me with confidence, makes it sound like it (mp3, dlna, wallpapers etc.) wasn't in development already but couldn't make it in time. Which aligns with how the blog made it sound as well. Maybe they will focus on it now, need themes sorted out as well.

:(

This actually bothers me. public/private key isn't really a new thing and their lack of response over time is a bit glaring. i cant imagine it being a technical limitation so I am chalking it up to security risks until I hear an official response.

i made my username in college, and I've been out for almost 6 years.

come on

While I agree with you, and if they bring this around in a year that's good, but why not say so in the FAQ? They stated that resume/suspend would be coming up, they should have said the same for these items.

i don't know why. i'm always about transparency, but when sony says "you'll be able to play mp3s in 3 years" does that help anyone or just make everyone more angry?

i'd say there are a lot more pressing items on the table that are tangibly going to improve the experience, such as external hard drive usage (if that is something that is planned to be allowed).

Also, if MS has all these features at launch they switched to an x86 architecture and were able to develop software on par with 360 so that's no excuse.

obviously their development environment is different, and i'd guess that they have based most of the new Xbox OS on Windows 8 code so they had a head start. It does offer a lot of integration with Windows 8, and tablets, unsurprisingly, so i think that is probably something to do with it -- as far as features go.

its also a point to note that Microsoft much more focused on a lot of the multimedia features and leveled the playing field with games. Xbox One's featureset is multimedia just as much as it is games. In fact, games are just "part" of the multimedia when it comes to that box. Sony has obviously ingrained their marketing, and seemingly their OS features to emphasize gaming more than other forms of media.

We will see but it's not as if x86 is some sort of fancy new architecture like CELL. From the standpoint of software, it is much easier to develop for, be it games, applications, or format support.

we'll have to see how often they have new features in their patches. with the secondary chip thing, they won't have to feel that bad about flashing a new OS everyday since it happens in the background.

we can all log on one day and see MP3s and DLNA allowed without even knowing an update downloaded.

or we could wait 5 years and never get either.

So I am completely and totally confused about headset compatibility with the ps4. Does it use some new kind of bluetooth that doesnt work with any bluetooth devices released before November 15th 2013? Same with the headaet jack on the controller. Whats so special about that awful mono headset?

even though there were some shitty things that came out of this FAQ i thought this was kind of neat. not sure if this was a feature on PS3.

Has DUALSHOCK 4′s internal motion sensor been upgraded since DUALSHOCK 3?

Yes, DUALSHOCK 4′s upgraded SIXAXIS motion sensor is noticeably more responsive compared to DUALSHOCK 3 in supported titles. For example, the PS4 edition of Flower features more responsive motion controls, enabling players to more easily guide flower petals. DUALSHOCK 4′s SIXAXIS motion sensor is even precise enough for text input. In this optional mode, PS4 users can “point” at different letters using the DUALSHOCK 4 controller to form words.

The only thing that worries me is if they add all this stuff that should have been there anyway how will the XMB act?
we seen it and it's really fast but is that because there is no contents to load?
What happens when they add an music player+library and a photo album+ video library
Did they keep them out so Gaming features at launch will be unhindered by them until they reduced Tue footprint?
or would adding them really effect the XMB performance?

The PS3 hardware was the problem, not just adding apps. Extremely limited RAM allocation caused the OS experience to suffer.

So basically you have to pay extra money to listen to music? Even the PS1 can play music for free....WTF sony. This makes no sense at all.

Damn that took a long time to read. Not much of the negative stuff really effects me. Stand is cheaper than I thought it'd be (I was thinking like $29.99 for some reason). There'll likely be some confusion on what content will be available in the day 1 patch and which is coming in a future patch as Sony didn't really clarify on some of the stuff.

Sorry if this has already been brought up, but what's the deal on USB headsets? Still incompatible?

USB headsets will be compatible following system software version 1.50.
After the update, most commercially available USB headsets will be compatible.

You can also output all game audio through DUALSHOCK 4 controller’s 3.5mm headset jack. You can select the Output to Headsets option to either ‘Chat Audio’ or “All Audio.”

Bluetooth headsets that are currently commercially available are incompatible.

Just because a device has a Bluetooth radio, doesn't mean it supports all the possible Bluetooth device profiles the spec has available. With the time crunch to ship the system, they had to prioritize what features to support. There's nothing stopping them from adding the feature down the road.

They are also not using Bluetooth for the controllers this time around, they are doing the MS thing and tweaking their own wireless spec to cut down on latency. So the audio would need to be transmitted over that wireless instead of using the Hand-Free Profile like the PS3 did. (And was why standard Bluetooth headsets work with that system.)

I dont think the faq answered this question or not but if we have no hdmi input on our current tv's how else are we supposed to connect ps4???

Out of luck officially. You could try a hdmi converter but I would advise waiting until Sony release the update that allows you to disable the hdcp protection on hdmi other wise you might end up paying more for the converter than the ps4.

You can get a converter if you need one, but it's obviously not ideal.

I assume you have component??

I have a question maybe it was answered in the FAQ. Can you add friends on PSN through the app? Thanks

This is the list from the earlier press about the app. Personally I'm looking forward to using it as a remote, hopefully it includes play/pause for media playback.

Directly access various PSN features and information

Users can access their own profile screen.
Users can access/compare their own and friends’ Trophy accomplishments.
Exchange messages between PS4 systems, PlayStation®3 (PS3™) systems, PlayStation®Vita (PS Vita) systems, and mobile devices installed with PlayStation®App.
Access and filter friend profiles.
Notify users about their friends’ shared activities on “What’s New”.
Notify PS4 users when they receive any new notifications or game invitations. Users can also display their lists of game items.

Browse the official PlayStation® website and access information
Users can access the PlayStation® official website to browse through news, blogs and game information. The language and content of the website will depend on the country the user’s Sony Entertainment Network account is registered.

PS4 Second Screen Feature
Users can install PlayStation®App on to their mobile devices to use as a second screen in supported games. For example on THE PLAYROOM, a title pre-installed in all PS4 systems that requires PlayStation®Camera, users can draw pictures on their mobile device screens and flick them towards the TV. The images then appear as a 3D object within the game.

Spectate other PS4 users’ gameplay
When users’ friends upload or begin live streaming their gameplay on PS4 systems, the friends’ activities are displayed on “What’s New” of the PlayStation®App screen. When users tap on this notification, they can boot pre-installed applications, such as browsers, to spectate the uploaded gameplay. Users can also post comments on gameplay screenshots, footage and live streams.

Purchase game content on PlayStation®Store
Users can purchase game content while away from home and download it directly onto their PS4, PS3, and PS Vita systems.

Use a mobile device as a simple remote to control the PS4 system
Once installed, users can use their PlayStation®App to control their PS4 system as long as both devices have access to the same Wi-Fi access point. For example, users can switch their PS4 system to standby mode, startup their PS4 system from standby mode, and use their mobile phone as a keyboard for their PS4 system.

That was good news. You should see the new build.

The delay is turning out to be worth it. Newer builds already look way better than the Gamescom build.

I agree, but I would think they planned to achieve this kind of quality already for November. Delaying a launch game so close to release was bad news. Pretty big as well considering it was planned that virtually every day-one PS4 owner would have been able to play it, so that bummed a lot of people even if they don't want to actually buy it.

It was quite a contrast to the almost exclusively positive news before, like, right before it was the fact that people will get Flower PS4 version etc. for free because Sony offers cross-gen-buy.

So the FAQ says:

PS4 measures approximately 275 mm (width) × 53 mm (height) × 305 mm (length), excluding the largest projection.

I currently have a PS3 Slim that just fits to the right/underneath my TV, and its dimensions are 290 X 65 X 290 mm.

Since all the exhaust ports are in the back of the PS4, I think I will put it where the PS3 Slim is so that the hot air ahs more room to move, and is not blowing on to the back panel of the entertainment center.
