UMD games, whats with the lack of a dust cover?

I imported a copy of Lumines and I was looking at the disk and noticed theres just an open slot on the back with nothing covering it up. I'd always assumed they were like MD's or old cd caddy's with a dust cover that slid closed when it wasn't in the system.

If they're open air like that, has anyone had a problem with getting dust inside the UMD? and how do you carry yours around. I wouldnt' just go sticking the plain disk in my pocket, which means I have to keep the discs in their cases.

What's fucking retarded is if you pop out the UMD from the RIGHT (where there is a thing to stick your finger in), you fucking touch the UMD surface!

Yea thats how i noticed it the first time.

Those cases look like they'll do the trick. I just feel retarded buying a case for my games that should already technically be protected.

Between this and the lack of a screen cover someone's going to make a killing on PSP cases

Yeah I've been wondering about that for awhile, I saw pics of a UMD and suepsizingly there was no slider, so I was like "WTF!? a slider is a no brainer, otherwise why even keep the disc in a cartridge!?"

Question, does the PSP's loading tray look like it has the necessary mechanisms to open a slider or is it obvious UMD was never meant to have one? because I could kind of understand if the ability of the tray wat=s there, but that they just shipped slider-less discs to see "if they could get away with it"

I don't think it's necessary. I think case manufacturers are gonna find some real suckers selling those worthless things. The only thing they're good for is organization. CDs have the worst surface protection of the current standards, and I stopped babying them years ago and handle them pretty rough now. In the car all day in the heat, and with a slot load in the car, you gotta grab the disc surface. I think if UMDs have anything like CD or, better yet, DVD, then it's pretty safe. The case will only expose a part of the disc anyway, so the extra cautious can just grab the carts from the correct position. I don't know if dust or fingerprints are anything to worry about. But we'll see. It could be Sony wants people to replace their UMDs every few years. :lol PEACE.
