I recently rediscovered the genius which is Underworld, and thought I'd give a shout out on the board to see if there were any other fans here. Someone once described them as "beautiful noise," and that's about the best description I've ever heard.
If "Born Slippy" were the only song they'd ever released, they would still be legendary...but that barely cracks my personal top 10 list! (Although, you have to admit, that's a pretty damn amazing track. The floaty keyboards, heavily distorted/chaotic lyrics, and pounding beats sum up everything you need to know about rave culture in 11 minutes. The brief reappearance of the beautiful intro theme about 4:30 in sets up the ending jackhammer wonderfully.)
Oh yeah, that top ten:
#1 has to be "Dirty Epic." Oh. My. GOD. Everything about this song is perfect, and these lyrics OWN: "and here comes another god / here comes another god / like a buffalo thunder / with a smell of sugar / and a velvet tongue / and designer voodoo / and i got phone sex to see me through / the emptiness in my 501s"
The rest, in no particular order:
"Born Slippy"
"Dark & Long"
"Juanita/Kiteless/To Dream Of Love"
"Pearl's Girl"
"Something Like A Mama"
"Stagger"
"Pearls's Girl (Tin There)"
"Two Months Off"
"Cups"
