Watching from a cigar bar near me. Fox News is on all of the screens. Would really prefer CNN, but they won't change it.

If this happens, you can be sure they will try to get rid of the electoral college.
I don't think it should be there in the first place regardless of past, current or future elections. It always struck me as odd. Then again I'm dumbstruck that 3rd parties aren't allowed on the debate floor, either.

Meh. It is what it is.

As a Canadian who isn't super familiar with the US political system, I have a question:

I am looking at Huffington Post's live election results, and they are reporting wins for Romney and Obama in certain states. When I look down the included results chart at these states, they often say that less than 10% of the ridings have reported in. How can they call a win if so many ridings have yet to report? When it says that 10% of ridings have reported, does it really mean that 10% of ridings have reported 100% of their votes, but the majority of votes have been counted in the outstanding 90% of ridings?

Combination of statistics (even with just 10% of votes counted, if the split is 70-30, there is hardly any possibility that the early results will be reversed), and historical patterns.

Sounds like Obama lost Ohio by 15 points, and with it, the election.

Not sure what you mean... just saying everyone is saying look how big the lead is when in reality he's not doing nearly as well as he did last time. Didn't say he was gonna lose but it's gonna tighten big time.

Most of the Obama votes come from Arlington county and Fairfax county.

John Gruden Play By Play:

"Wow this team Virgina is playing deadly. Most of the team has no clue what to do. Do you red it out to a nickel or do you blue it up to a Tampa 2. I have to admit 2 of those guys Arlington and Fairfax are playing a man's man game. They truly are holding this team up. I would love to have those guys or be part of a winning team. They are born winners!"

New York and California will take care of the popular vote.

That's what I've been thinking. I don't buy these national polls that have Romney over Obama. How could Romney be over Obama when California and NY are about 60-40 Obama vote wise (at least what I think will happen tonight).

When I was watching, I saw the northern most counties as red, but they only have like 5% reporting, so yeah still not over yet.

It's like very, very northernmost. And the tiniest as well. Arlington Co is also just the city. Tough to see even on online maps.

Really wish Al Jazeera would rebrand itself for America, some people won't even give it a chance because of the Arabic name :| Such a great job reporting too.

Linda McMahon's commercials were so annoying

I almost though she was a Democrat the way her ads haunted me and I don't even have a TV

Surfing online I got her ads on CNN and other places glad I looked up the ballot just to make sure I was not mistaking something the way her ads seemed so pro-Obama

Lot of rural NC votes starting to come in. NC seems to be starting to chug in Bam's favor. 1% Mitt lead for now.

edit - according to new 14 carolina's anyway.

Imagine a state with two counties. One county typically votes 70-30 Democratic, it's called Big City County. One county typically votes 55-45 Republican, it's called Farmer Land County. Big City County has way more people. Imagine that Farmer Land County is 25% in and is going 50-50 (and we have no reason to believe other precincts yet to report in the county are going to be materially different). Do you need more information to call the state?

I get that certain states (and counties within those states) vote the same way each election. I am just confused how they can declare a state "won" (at least anymore won than it was yesterday) by a particular party when 90-99% of the ridings have yet to report. Are the ridings not roughly equal in population? Are they just waiting for a fraction of actual voting data to come in so that it can be compared to past elections?

Combination of statistics (even with just 10% of votes counted, if the split is 70-30, there is hardly any possibility that the early results will be reversed), and historical patterns.

This sort of answers my question. So basically they know that State X always votes red or blue, and once they have a little data confirming that nothing is different this election, they can extrapolate. Thanks!
