United States Election: Nov 6, 2012 |OT| - Barack Obama Re-elected

I completely get that the odds are stacked with regard to the debates and general access, but they're very late in the process. The debates are a sham, as you say, and they don't do much to move the needle for the candidates anyway. If that's what any third party is primarily relying on to gain popular traction, then they've squandered a lot of their time and done so on something that won't prove that effective for increasing their odds of success.

In this day, there are many ways for third party candidates to get their message out and garner support. Long before a debate enters the picture, they should already have at least low double-digit support if they want to have a chance of getting anywhere. I really think that much is up to them, at the very least.

I agree that no third party candidate should count on popular media exposure exclusively to spread their message and gain support, and any candidate who says that their exclusion from the debates is the sole reason they're not doing better is either short-sighted or disingenuous.

But if someone is on the ballot in more than 80% of the country, they should be included in the debates. Excluding them is serving no one except Democrats and Republicans hell-bent on keeping their jobs at the expense of providing greater choice to voters. Whatever your opinion of Jill Stein or Gary Johnson, there's no denying they would have proven to be valuable foils to Obama and Romney during their "official" debates.

can anyone please recommend a free iPhone app that will let me stream live election coverage? i won't be home tonight.

it has to work while the phone is off so i can just put it on my desk, turn it off, and it will still play. audio only is fine, don't really need video.

I actually don't really understand the Romney/Ryan image. They're pretty clearly not gay, they don't seem especially close or unified as a ticket, they're not really on the same page ideologically, and the presumption would be that the people who are on the laughing side of the image don't care if people are gay.

I believe the jokes are:

"Hey, you guys don't like this. We don't respect you and the way you're treating this group of people you don;t like and will therefore portray you in this way, because fuck you."

and

"Hey, you guys don't like this, so here is an image of the people you like as this, just to annoy you."

Not particularly subtle or nuanced, but there you have it.

Naw go ahead and vent. Free speech and all that. Hasn't been taken away from us yet.

I feel like it was intentionally laid out so as to make it hard for liberals to find what they are looking for, as they put Romney at the top of the President section, while they put Obama at the bottom, with like 6 or so third-party candidates between them. They also put Issue 2 (the legislation that would make the redistricting process non-partisan) on the back alone, and many people may not even bother to look. These things are minor, but, with the shit Husted has been pulling...

Oh okay. Seems like it would be easier/make more sense to have them all close at the same time besides the time zone difference I mean. It's better this way I guess cause we won't have to wait for results longer.

If things go the way that I *hope* they do, we can safely predict this by around 9 pm (failing ridiculous counting/recounting issues). The majority of the electoral votes in PST are (presumably) a lock for Obama.

My gut says that Ohio is Obama, FLA is Romney. The toss up is PA.

I'm more surprised Dennis Miller is a) alive and b) still has a show. But I really want to know what Paula Poundstone thinks.

They just said on MSNBC that Virginia has had a bigger turn out this year than 2008. Truth?

At our poling place in VA they said they would have more than 50% of the registered voters to have voted before noon. Sounds pretty crazy.

Edit:
Just our precinct.

RE: Dennis miller

Not a surprise. Miller is a very passionate fire-breather who has a gut-feeling tell-it-like-it-is approach. Obama is a meek, quiet, dialectical, compromise politician. Even notwithstanding policy differences, they're a very poor match in terms of personality.

PA is not toss up. Put it this way, if Obama loses PA, he has already lost Ohio.

So I guess US elections aren't like here in Canada where results can't be posted until the polls close across the country?

Usually states are reported after their polls close. There are a couple states that have areas in two different time zones, Florida being one. It is generally discouraged, especially after the 2000 race, to call states one way or another until all polls have closed. Most swing states being on the east coast helps things to not take too long, generally.

Mark Halperin says his sources tell him turnout is extremely high in the GOP areas of the swing states.

Not surprising. The GOP has done a good job of mobilizing...they did it in 2010, learned from what DIDN'T work, and are attempting to improve on it now. Agree or disagree, I have to give it to them. They did a good job getting people up in arms and motivated to take action.

I refuse to believe PA is a toss up.

It's all bluster.

so around what time do I turn between msnbc, cnn and fox news for when the totals start coming in and shit starts to get real?

Both CNN and Fox News are saying 6pm EST they will start reporting what little data is coming in. So 6pm EST? It may take an hour or so to start getting into serious numbers though.

Voted for Obama this morning (and Donnelly for senate), but I had to get up at fucking 6 am to do so. I had work in the morning and school right now until 9:40 so it was literally the only time I could vote. My sister isn't voting because she has work until 7 (polls close at 6 in IN) and she didn't get up early enough to make it to the polls before she had to go to work.

This is why I can't fucking fathom why election day isn't a national holiday. I'm one of the most politically motivated people I know and I still almost considered not voting because of how inconvenient it is and how busy my day is. I can only imagine the amount of people who would vote if they actually had some fucking free time on election day.

Also, my state rep and state senator positions were both Republicans running unopposed. Fuck this state.

Obama isn't going to lose PA. If Obama does lose PA early you may want to just turn off the TV as you aren't going to like the results from other states (assuming you're a Obama supporter).

Yeah they start posting as soon as that states poll closes. Otherwise we would have to wait on Alaska that closes at 12am ET.

More like waiting until Hawaii closes no?

Think he means they don't report on east coast polls until west coast polling stations closes?

Yeah. So here in BC the election has already be decided as soon as our polls close (most times anyway) but at least we can't be watching the results and say "well why bother voting"
