I'm sure I read this line in a Halo book (or another sci-fi book anyway).

Well I wrote it in the voice of Karl Urban's Judge Dredd.

I actually don't really understand the Romney/Ryan image. They're pretty clearly not gay, they don't seem especially close or unified as a ticket, they're not really on the same page ideologically, and the presumption would be that the people who are on the laughing side of the image don't care if people are gay.

You're coming at this from the wrong angle. The point is that they're attractive and them being together would be naughty, surprising and oh so beautiful. It's fanfiction.

Locked out yes, but better yet, the debates are run by the two major parties. The Commission on Presidential Debates was set up as a way for the Dems/GOP to control everything about them, from the panel, to the locations, to participants. They're essentially a sham.

The institution most likely to assist in getting non-major party messages out there to the world at large is controlled by those that have the most to lose by allowing them to participate. Not surprisingly, the 'news' media doesn't have the balls to point this out or to actually put their feet down and not participate in the charade. Both Johnson and Stein are on enough state ballots that they could (theoretically, of course) win the presidency, yet they aren't allowed to participate (nor do they get Secret Service protection, because the DHS doesn't declare them eligible)

I actually tend to agree that a ground-level grassroots effort could get more people voting Green/Libertarian, but keep in mind that until people see candidates from those parties IN THE MEDIA, they're still going to be largely regarded as also-rans. Media exposure can do *a lot*.
I completely get that the odds are stacked with regard to the debates and general access, but they're very late in the process. The debates are a sham, as you say, and they don't do much to move the needle for the candidates anyway. If that's what any third party is primarily relying on to gain popular traction, then they've squandered a lot of their time and done so on something that won't prove that effective for increasing their odds of success.

In this day, there are many ways for third party candidates to get their message out and garner support. Long before a debate enters the picture, they should already have at least low double-digit support if they want to have a chance of getting anywhere. I really think that much is up to them, at the very least.

So when's a good time to start tuning in and seeing some results? Around 9pm eastern?

I've been occupying my day with just about anything to keep myself from worrying about the election, especially since no results are in yet, but when the time comes I just want to jump in as it's going down.

Closer to 9:30. My suggestion is to base it on Virginia. Supposedly they have their shit together (early votes counted and will be included) and they are polling close. If Romney wins, watch MSNBC for the rest of the evening. If Obama wins by more than 3%, watch FOXNews and if it's close, watch CNN until it's clear who the loser will be and pick their cheerleader network to watch. This strategy made 2008 and 2010 fantastic.
