UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson assassinated

Al Jazeera Special Reporter
Just curious.

When Obama mandated healthcare, but happens if someone has issues and goes to the hospital without insurance?

Does the government penalize you or fine you for not having it?
The "mandate" just means there's a tax penalty for not having it, it didn't change anything about how the uninsured get care. And even the tax thing isn't really enforced anymore.

If someone uninsured goes to the ER they will get critical urgent treatment and probably a bill so large they can never pay. I met someone who lost a toe to diabetes and got a million dollar bill for it.

But other than critical life or death shit they won't really be able to access treatments without paying amount of money that normal people don't have. Like for medications you would just be SOL once you're out of the hospital.

He was attending an investor meeting that was known publicly to be happening.
Sure, but which hotel? When/where Mr. Thompson would be approaching? Did the shooter conduct his own reconnaissance and find this stuff out or was he just planning on waiting somewhere else or go into the meeting itself and all of the sudden this CEO walks right out in front of him?

People will try to blame left or right wing radicalization for this, but the most likely reality here, which is the case in most of these incidents, is barring some unknown history of violence the most likely scenario is this is a dude who just went off the deep end and was mentally unstable.

So, because he was a public nuisance, he deserved to die? That is quite a take my guy.
He did more than that. He assaulted women numerous times.

Regardless, he was a volatile nut job in a subway and he was handled by Penny protecting himself and the public. Everyone agreed with Penny. Case closed.

I don't know enough about those cases to render an opinion. But if you're trained in tactics that include a chokehold to render someone unconscious, you are taught to let go as soon as they stop moving and unconscious. You don't keep holding on for minutes after they're unconscious. That's where manslaughter or criminal negligence comes into play. Penny should have released when the man was no longer a threat.

If the dude died when Penny let go RIGHT AFTER he stopped moving, I'd say "they came to the right conclusion" and agreed with you. I can't considering the circumstances.

But maybe you should read the situation again.

It's part of his message about greed in the health care industry. Same with the words he put on the bullets. It's all very performative and cringe IMO. Like, something somebody would do when they watch way too many movies.

In the end, I'm guessing he'll be viewed more like Aaron Bushnell and less like Gary Plauché.

I think we're through the looking glass when actual murders are being criticised for being too performative.

Yeah, people posted his commencment speech. Apparently went to a $40k per year private school. Was the valedictorian of his class. Went to an ivy league school.

He had all the tools to go and fight this the right way. Guys like him either become CEOs or congressmen.

Reminds of Ted Kaczynski more than anyone.

Well he was basically shot right outside the hotel where the conference was held.

It’s really not difficult to imagine how that is possible without some tin foil hat conspiracy.

He's only 26 and going by his Linkedin, he's a Data Engineer III. Promoted twice at his company already. Sounds like a good job that probably pays well and he's only in his mid-20s.... (unless it's a bogus title and pays crap).

Guy could probably be CIO at some point.

But like lots of wacky people (not surprised by his trail of terrorist/political material he read), some people cant help but act out on thoughts instead of being chill. Just do the stereotypical boring thing. If your slogged out from work or pissed, just slap that ass on a couch with a cold drink and watch a ballgame after dinner.

That's what it is. Performative nonsense by some tryhard that radicalized himself online. Nothing meaningful will change other than future death threats being taken more seriously. Mission accomplished, comrades. Make sure to pick up your freshly printed tshirt and attend the next lookalike contest.

Really? You think the CEO and presumably one of the main speakers at this event would just walk up all by himself instead of being driven into the garage, move around in a group, stay in the Hilton himself, or something that would make getting close to him whilst wearing a mask and hoodie and using a very small caliber, low rate of fire weapon actually a workable plan?

The whole thing smacks of 'divine' providence on the order of the Archduke of Astro-Hungary pulling up in front of your cafe if that's what you believe happened.

I knew it was some lone wolf crap from the start (reminded me of Shinzo Abe assassination). The 3d printed gun seems so obvious in hindsight with the crappy cycling of the gun.

Lucky for him that he did this is New York considering the retarded fanclub that seems to be building around assassinations he has a realistic chance at a hung jury.
Conservatives like to project their own willingness to defend murderers and vigilante justice when it suits their ideology (ie, this penny guy, arbery, Floyd, Zimmerman, etc etc). You are deluded by your own beliefs if you think this guy isn't going to prison for the rest of his life. There is nobody on the left who thinks this guy isnt a cold blooded murderer and nobody will shed a tear at his sentencing

Yes all absolutely possible.

You are doing the basic conspiracy theorist thing where you ask questions that can all be answered with “sure” and acting like these are extreme things.

It’s Manhattan. There are CEO’s walking round all over the place.

I'd say next to zero chance at a hung jury. Juries are usually very good at doing their duty. And there's jury selection. The only way I'd see if there's a hung jury is if the prosecution fails to prove he's the guy who did it or the defense can argue insanity--which is incredibly hard to prove and would have no chance in this case given the amount of planning required. He's toast and he's going to prison for a long time.

As simplex as it might seem, maybe the guy was hurt from wrestling, got bad healthcare from United and got ultra pissed. He then read about other healthcare issues, it snowballed and it lead to him going nuts and killing?
Best thing to do is observe. He’ll have his day in court. Unless he gets Epstein’d.

Who knows. If he didn't have a history of violence, I'd imagine some type of mental break episode probably played a role. It could have been influenced possibly by drugs he took after a back surgery. Who knows. But I would be surprised if some mental health component was not a factor. This is almost always the case with killers like this who carry manifestos, they're all off their rocker.

Dont know who that is but just checked the YT site and see it's tons of prison sentence kind of vids. Looks like hilarious vids. Bookmarked.
He served time in a prison in Virginia so he has interesting takes since he’s been through the system.

Well shit lmao. Apparently I know this guy, or at least have a connection with him. I don’t want to go into anymore detail than that. Small, weird world. (I also grew up right next to Butler, PA…)

Just watched the first one about the 20 year guy with bad hair. Had to google what the difference between pleading Guilty and No Contest is, since to me it seems like the same thing. But there is a difference.

I just started watching the second video with the women wearing orange.

I like how the guy narrating will chime in context telling viewers what the acronyms are as the court session goes on.

Valedictorian. Bachelors and masters in CS from UPenn. AI/ML and robotics.

He was into stoicism, quoted latin.

Followed Tim Urban, Andrew Huberman, Jonathan Haidt, Steve Stewart-Williams

Should've used his powers to build something. Waste of two lives now.

All that education and gets busted eating some Mcnuggets. With the gun on him.

No matter how many degrees. No matter how many proverbs and quotes spewed.

Stupidity and a lack of logic still win.

Also sucks for McDonald's. This ain't like when Charles Ramsey had to put down his Big Mac to help Amanda Berry after she escaped being held captive for 11 years lol

You don't need to be religious to make that critique.

Yeah, I was reading/following all the new atheist stuff over the years and had the exact same assumption. Kind of a bummer seeing people just replace religion with politics, celebrity news and whatever random influence they get online.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he wanted to eventually be caught. He’s basically become a folk hero at this point.

He was bound to get caught eventually, but may not have been done killing. So you keep your manifesto on you and while you ditch the gun you keep the much more difficult to obtain silencer around.

Manifesto says “parasites deserved it” as well (plural.)
