I can't wait to see how they get this to work on their miniscule budget. I'm guessing most of it will take place in the dark, with no mammoths, polar bears, sled dogs, shadowcats, and maybe only a handful of giants sprinkled about. My expectations are very low.

Personally, I'm not worried about the budget or the direction, I'm worried about the script.
GRRM wrote Blackwater and all his episodes have been great. D&D's are hit and miss.

It's just a battle though. How hard can it be to write?

i'm jinxing it so hard right now

I guess that's one is kinda more about the king's landing preparation, but whatever it's still awesome

Does it come in higher resolutions? Looks like an excellent wallpaper for those who support the one true King of Westeros!

Are you guessing or was there a leak or something?

I hope so. Do we know what the budget was for the episode?
Blackwater was over $8 Million (the typical budget for Season 2 episodes was $6 million).

They rarely release budget numbers for shows, but given the look of the show now and what people have said about HBO pouring a lot more money into the show, I'd guesstimate they are probably spending 8-10 million per episode for season 4.

Can I think Maisie Williams is hot yet?

I dont care about ages, and I dont have problems thinking some 16 year olds are hot, because some of them look like proper women.
maisie on the other hand looks still very girlish. she sure is a cute girl but it doesnt feel right calling her hot.

Just finishing catching up and the fight between the Mountain and the Viper was simply incredible.

Really looking forward to seeing Dorne next season.

Thank you, mr. Bridgman. I wish you hadn't written it like an angry 19-year old, but your point is well made.

Also, I hate this because Oberyn did wear a helmet in the books, dammit! GRRM likes his helmets and he was even annoyed at the directors deciding Stannis wouldn't be wearing one in Blackwater. xD

I find it weird how people act like a helmet would've done anything for Oberyn.

So at least $10 million? That's not too bad I suppose. Needs be 5-6 times that in order to do it justice tho u_u

Pledging my allegiance to STANNIS! STANNIS! STANNIS! for tonight (or tomorrow for UKers like me.) May he smite his foes and reign long over westeros.

Also gonna be wishing luck to Rose Leslie. If she did it right she may earn one of the most memorable and emotional scenes of the series.

I have a feeling that todays episode will be the most disappointing one for many book readers.
there are so many elements in it which they really havent done justice to in the past. jon, ygritte, stannis, mance (is he even in that season?), budget for battles was always low. I dont have a good feeling about it.

I've just always found the stuff on The Wall bleak (even by Westeros standards), so it'll inevitably be a bit of a dud for me. With Blackwater you had characters that were very developed over time; Stannis on the frontline, Tyrion struggling to defend the city, and Cersei going batshit elsewhere.

They've made big strides with Jon's characterisation this series, but not enough for me to give much of a shit about what happens to him or his irritating girlfriend.

Oh I totally agree. The show has grossly mishandled everything north of winterfell. It's a damn mess. I don't expect it to resonate with the unsullied as much as it would to book readers. I mean I had high hopes of seeing this episode before this season started :/

I think Jon is still recovering from how his character was handled in season 2. He has actually been pretty good since then but that was so bad that it's been kinda uphill. However, this episode is the catalyst for his new arc, as he learns to be a leader, whereas his first arc was more about loyalty to the watch and learning to be a man in general. And coincidentally they can also start to recover Stannis's character from here too. So provided they didn't to all that shit on purpose and intend to carry on with it this ep may be pretty good.

There was not really a huge battle in the books though. You had the attack on castle black, the giant trying to make it through the tunnel at the wall, and the nights watch firing arrows and throwing barrels of gravel and ice off the top of the wall. Stannis' cavalary also made their charge through the woods in order to not reveal how few they actually were. Mance's army dispersed and ran after that, so there was not really any large scale battle between armies.

Agreed.

This season has been at it's strongest when it focused on events at King's Landing.

Yeah, reading the book, Jon was my favorite character (besides Arya), his romance with Ygritte was the best in the series and her death made me tear up, and the battle had a ton of weight to it due to all of the supporting characters in the North, whether they be Wildlings Jon knew or members of the Watch being properly developed. And the battle itself was Pelennor Feilds level of badass or more.

Meanwhile, the TV show has done an absolutely piss-poor job of developing anything that's not in King's Landing, with the Wall storyline being the worst offender by far ever since season 1. I mean, FFS, has Mance even been in more than one fucking scene? I'm really not expecting much out of tonight as far as writing and the emotional resonance goes. They have gotten better at directing fight/action scenes (the laughable Asha dog scene excepted), so hopefully some of the action will be entertaining at least.

I've got a feeling that Young Aegon is going to midway through TWOW. He's an inexperienced blue-haired teenager leading a war that would end upon his death. Every archer in Westeros will train their bows to him.

When this happens, Jon Connington will pledge his support for Jon Snow, knowing him to also be the trueborn son of Rhaegar. Daenerys will arrive during the struggle between Stannis and the Jons.

I'm not sure if I think Connington will die or not. On the one hand it's very very possible he'll die along with Aegon (who's totally a dead man walking), on the other like you said he might live to find out the truth about Jon and support him.

Lol maybe Connington will pull a Littlefinger and start to support Snow because he was in love with his father xD

That will probably JonCon's motivation for supporting other-Jon. He failed Rhaegar and he failed his son. All he can do to redeem himself is fight for the claim of Rhaegar's second son.

Do you think Jon Snow was named after Jon Connington? Rhaegar may have told Lyanna, "Name the child Jon". However, we don't really know how close Rhaegar and JonCon were.

Had never made the connection, but that can't be an accident.

Prolly after Jon Arryn. He seems like a father figure to both Bobby B and Ned

For the battle, I think it helps a lot that it's season 4 and not season 2. It's not like they had to build a bunch of new sets, especially for the Wall, all that work had already been done and paid for. For Blackwater, and season 2 in general, there was a lot of new stuff, huge ramp up of characters and locales from season 1. I'm sure they had way more budget for this battle than for Blackwater.

I can't think of a single episode this season that piqued my interested less than this one. I generally don't care about big battles and the show made it really hard to give a fuck about anyone on the wall, the wildlings, and Stannis' party.

the Wildlings are at Castle Black, showering Jon with gifts and the songs of their people
Jon smiles, enjoying this valuable cultural experience
a cry is heard in the distance
suddenly, the camera pans to the thundering stampede of a thousand men on horses
we see Stannis driving the men to fight by cracking a flaming whip
"FORM RANKS, YOU DOGS"
in the distance, Wildling women and children are burning, the soundtrack a high screaming wail
"TAKE THE WOMEN FOR OUR THRALLS," Stannis shouts, "FEED THE BABES TO THE FIRES"
"Yes," cries Davos, "R'hllor hungers!"
Jon looks on, his face gormless
"Seven save us," Jon whispers, "he's even making the women and children pay the Iron price!"

Rhaegar was naming his kids after Aegon the Conqueror and his two sisters because of the prophecy. If Rhaegar had his way, Jon would probably be named Viserys, Viserion, or some other male Visenya equivalent.

Uh, Ned could use that as the cover story, but R&L had next to no interaction with Arryn.

That's possible. GRRM mentioned that Jon Snow was "most likely named by Ned", but as a self-professed gardener he's certainly one to retcon earlier, semi-canon statements.

I imagined Jon telling the person that tells him about his lineage that he was named after Jon Arryn, the man that fostered his father, and that person saying some line like "Yes, you were named after a Jon, but you were named after the griffin, not the falcon."

Sounds like a Quaithe line. Ned probably gave him that name though.
I really want TWOW to come out.
