I'm surprised this season is being ranked worse than 5, i thought it was great up to episode 4 and then went off the rails for the last three. I dont remember anything in season 5 other than hardhome.

Edit - edit oh wait 5 had dorne! Yea worst season by far.
I'm rewatching S5 at the moment. The first ~five episodes actually aren't all that bad. Stannis is at the Wall with Jon. Arya's just getting started at the House of Black and White, so it isn't horrible yet. Tyrion and Varys is relatively fun, and then Tyrion ends up paired with Jorah. Margaery and Cersei are at each other's throats in King's Landing. The pacing is obviously so much better as well. And then as you said - Hardhome is a great action episode.

It's not a good season, but I definitely think it's better than Season 7.

They could have just walked round it right? It's on a coast so they were probably waiting for the water to freeze (or planing to freeze it) and walk around. Or they could have bust through a gate with giants like in season 4.

They had a few options but now they have a dragon they could attack.
I don't think they could walk around it or they would have done so by now. Can't the Night King freeze things with his presence alone? And I don't think they could just attack the Wall's gate either - it's not just a big slab of ice stopping them from getting through. There's meant to be magic in the Wall that prevents them from passing through as well. There's other ways this will eventually happen in the books (the horn), but obviously the show wouldn't want to introduce that so late in the game. I just think it ended up very contrived.

Have there by any comments on writers about any of the events being provided by George himself? I kinda get the feeling they're straight winging it themselves. I'm curious whether the White Walkers will in fact capture a dragon and use it to take down the wall. Could go down totally different. I do think Littlefinger will die by Sansa using all that she learns against him. As cunning as he is, love will blind him and be his downfall. That is definitely his fate. The pay off on the show was great, but man was it frustrating getting to that point.

season 5 was pretty good overall with a handful of moments that really ruined it

season 7 was really bad overall with a handful of moments that elevated it

that's why i rank 5 slightly above 7

The Dragon thing will 100% happen. Three dragons need three riders.

I can see theon rescuing yara, killing euron and stealing the golden company to deliver it to jon's forces. All in the same episode (to compensate jaime's "lmao its just me! Jaime!")

That could be the ultimate redemption of reek. Then he can die in battle with honor.

I actually think it ended up better than the main plot of the series. Seeing it as some Xanatos gambit from Arya to out Little Finger leading to his public execution at least had a pay-off.

The whole North/South plot revolved around people being idiots and risking everything to appease Cersi when she'd obviously betray them.

Oh, right! Forgot about the prophecy. The Night King being one of the riders would definitely be a detail in whatever outline George gave to them. At least if there's a capture the wight plot in the books it can't be any worse than the show. In George we trust.

Yeah I'm pretty sure in the books people wouldn't be like "Oh you murdered your daughter-in-law and our spiritual leader in a crazy explosion and made your son the king commit suicide, please be our new queen." The show in general has papered over all sorts of insane kinslaying bullshit that would never work.

My assumption, if Martin goes this route in the books, is that they engineer the incident to look like an assassination plot by agents of Dany or Fake Aegon. I'm actually surprised this wasn't done in the show - it would have explained the "foreign invader with an army of savages" angle that caused many to side with Cersei.

Definitely seems to have had a bump around the start of the show, and towards the middle when Jaime returned to King's Landing? lol.

Funny irrelevant tidbit about myself: I have absolutely no knowledge of King of the Hill except for this episode. Over the past two decades I've watched the show maybe five times after catching it while channel surfing - and all of those times, it was this episode.

TV is weird.

Also, that Theon fight scene was pathetic, and ruined the great conversation he had with Jon just before that.

I've seen people suggest that the Night King can see glimpses of the future and was basically waiting until Dany would bring the dragons, but in that case it means that arguably the most important moment in the entire story comes as a result of the most idiotic plan ever devised. That really lessens its impact imo.
Yup.

season 7 was really bad overall with a handful of moments that elevated it
Yup.

I still enjoyed season 7 overall, and was entertained by it, but I've come to expect better, and therefore was disappointed.

No, the dead have often come back north of the wall, which is why the Wildlings burn their dead. Perhaps Mance somehow triggered the WW to move south with his prodding, but he didn't start the dead rising.

Isn't the appearance of the white walkers part of the whole red comet and the return of dragons/magic?

Woof.

Everything at Winterfell was wretched.

Some decent stuff elsewhere, but god damn that Winterfell plot was awful. What a lame end to Littlefinger, and Bran the Exposition Tree is already grating.

So I was a bit confused, i thought it looked like Cersei gave a nod to the Mountain to go ahead and kill Jaime? Why did the Mountain stop

Of all the dumb shit this season and lost time, I didn't really think the wight plan for Cersei was all that dumb and honestly fairly reasonable. Maybe Tyrion just said it in a very reasonable manner but showing Cersei that they actually exist and it is real by going and getting one seems fine. The part that felt kinda contrived was sitting in a frozen lake all surrounded by the entire army and the Night King and getting asspull saved by Dragons and momentarily Benjen.

The fact that they had no exit plan and there were so few of them that they were screwed if they encountered any large number of wights is part of why it's a dumb plan.

Someone who wants to make a quick buck should throw together a few paragraphs about this graph and submit to a site like buzznews, kotaku or forbes. Maybe wait until we can see the Jonerys bump

All of Jon's talk about not wanting to break promises was a bit rich.

Funny thing is, in the end that probably worked out for the best. Cersei would have betrayed them anyway. Now, at least, he's free to fight her afterwards, whether it's for Dany or himself. Jon keeps getting rewarded for stupidity

The end of season 7 then. Decent season overall, but the pacing has not been good. Always wanted to see the wall brought down by the horn that was a plot point earlier in the series. Rather convenient to get a dragon to take it down so late in the game, but whatever.
The end of LF was cheap honestly. Nice to see the Starks get their revenge, but for a man who claims to see all possible endings sure was to blind to the obvious. Jons name being Aegon is strange. Why name two sons Aegon? Thought it would be Jaehaerys, but it doesn't matter anyway. Now we wait.

Where is this theory coming from now?

Legend of Lightbringer
Darkness lay over the world and a hero, Azor Ahai, was chosen to fight against it. To fight the darkness, Azor Ahai needed to forge a hero's sword.[3] He labored for thirty days and thirty nights until it was done. However, when he went to temper it in water, the sword broke. He was not one to give up easily, so he started over.

The second time he took fifty days and fifty nights to make the sword, even better than the first. To temper it this time, he captured a lion and drove the sword into its heart, but once more the steel shattered.[3]

The third time, with a heavy heart, for he knew beforehand what he must do to finish the blade, he worked for a hundred days and nights until it was finished. This time, he called for his wife, Nissa Nissa, and asked her to bare her breast. He drove his sword into her living heart, her soul combining with the steel of the sword, creating Lightbringer, the Red Sword of Heroes.[3]

Although he had Lightbringer, Azor Ahai did not fight alone.[5] The Jade Compendium mentions that when the hero thrust the blade through a monster, the creature burst into flame.[6]

It is unknown if Azor Ahai is connected with the legend of the last hero, who lived during the Long Night and helped to defeat the Others.

Jon Snow is pretty invincible these days, but I think we're still going to see him go super saiyan.

What I liked:

1) Jamie keeping his word, fucking loved it
2) Incestual sex, awww yeah
3) Littlefinger trial

What I didn't like:

1) Psycko-Bran telling Sam the whole truth, should have been to Jon as the most epic reveal
2) I didnt like that they needed the dragon to cross over

EDIT: Also, why did Tyrion look like he was going to die when Dany and Jon had sex?

I don't know how to feel about Winterfell, we know Sansa will be Littlefinger's demise, but it felt so contrived, that Sansa used the Bran cheat cheapens her victory somewhat.

Shouldn't have Sam been more shocked to find out that Jon isn't who he said he was?

One thing we learned is that Bran isn't some all knowing all seeing god-like figure. He actually has to focus on a certain place and time in the past to learn the events that occurred. He had no idea that Jon was a legitimate Targaryen heir until Sam told him.

I always love watching the episode, hopping in the no book spoilers thread for all the raves, then into this one for all the complaining.

The juxtaposition always gets me

They might as well have had Arya kill LF, steal his face and say "I'm leaving to do some business, knights of the Vale are under Sansa's command" and just let him be missing, presumed dead.
