Unrealistic Expectations

No, this is not another Nintendo damage control thread. Rather, it is to do with the crytal ball gazing inabilities of Japanese gaming executives. In particular:

Namco announced their expected shipment of the Xbox 360 title Frame City Killers is 1 million copies worldwide.

Do these guys just love shooting themselves in the foot or what?

[conspiracy mode]Probably just so they have a reason to stop support of the Xbox 360 [/conspiracy mode]

Well, put it this way... Microsoft will have a worldwide launch (near simultaneous) so game companies that can have their games ready for all markets in time for launch or close to it have a nice chance to reap great rewards. If Microsoft is able to sell close to 2.5-3 million units worldwide for the holidays, the better games can expect to move 400k+ worldwide in the holiday season. The best launch games will hit 1 mil, imo. Not only will they rake it in at launch, they'll have built a nice fanbase that will likely look forward to a sequel down the road.

Madden '06, Ghost Recon 3, Godfather, PGR3 and Perfect Dark 0 are the likeliest launch titles that will sell close to 1 million when all is said and done.

Kameo, NBA Live, Fifa, Need for Speed, DOA4, and a few others could hit close to 500k or more, imo.

I expect all these games to pull in 8.0 or higher average rankings in reviews. That kind of quality is unheard of at launch period. The closer we get to 360 launch, the better all these games are going to look and many will become 'nigh irresistable for fans of the genres, especially to the mass market sports junkies. These are the reasons why Xbox 360 will come swiftly out of the gates and continue strongly with the release of the Japanese RPG's, Halo 3, Shadowrun, Bioware RPG's, Fable 2, Forza 2, etc in '06.

Frame City's animations looked like a joke. They really need to redo... all of them. But otherwise, graphics = yay

This is the same Namco that expected:

1 million for Gundam One Year War (250k sold)
1 million for XSep1 (later scaled down to 600k) --- (400k sold)
500k for Namco Museum PSP (30-50k sold?)
either 1 million or 500k for ToE PSP (300-400k sold)
expects 500k for Namco x Capcom

I'm ignorant - who is VelocityGirl?

In the MS press conference they had a few personas:

Striker - hardcore gamer
Velocity Girl - plays Xbox Live Arcade games
Beat Basher (?) - owns a 360 for the digital media functionality

This is the EXACT SAME thing that happened with Dreamcast. Namco predicted Soul Calibur on DC would sell something ridiculous, 2-3 million or something, and then used that as the main excuse when they dumped DC.

But if they dump PS2 because of poor Gundam sales, then they dump PSP because of poor Tales sales, then they dump DS because of poor Pac Pix sales, what will they have left? OMG GameCube!!!
