I don't see a lot of complaining, mostly gloating and other people digging in that they were right, when they were wrong.

But that's likely your bias showing if you see otherwise

Highlights from this thread:
  1. Sony wants you to pay for a separate PS4 or PS5 version at different price points (or buy the 80 deluxe edition).
    1. People complain
  2. Sony owns up to their mistake and offers a free upgrade to the PS5 version.
    1. People complain
you're on the internet. people complain.

"and any other exclusive cross-gen PS4 & PS5 title published by Sony Interactive Entertainment"

I wonder how long and for how many games Sony is going for crossgen titles.

@Defence Force.
As you can see sometimes shitstorms help, you don't have to defend everything. Helped Halo to become a better game and helped PS4 owners so save some bucks.
Going by the Washington Post article, 3-4 more years of support, which takes PS4 to 2023 or 2024. And with PS4/PS5 being easy to do BC, I'd say just about every big hitter till then will be cross gen. We can see it already. GOW, GT7 and Horizon FW are cross gen. I expect UC 5 to be too. And as Jim's quote "and any other exclusive game", so he knows GOW and GT7 arent the cut off.

Sony has made PS5 exclusive games across their lesser selling brands like R&C, side games like Spiderman and smaller scale games like Returnal and Destruction All Stars. But the big sellers cant turn away PS4 user base. Sales potential too high to lose.

Xbox has half the userbase, their cross gen games are basically last gen (ie. Halo). Forza will have better textures, resolution, and draw distance but it wont have more assets like Horizon.

idk why i'm responding, you're all hopeless lol
Yeah you probably should have tried some better facts if you wanted people to take it seriously.

Probably avoid supposition or estimating until the games you want to downplay are actually out also.

Nice to see that complaining works, it's been a couple of those situations this year.
yup it's good to see people stand up for themselves. hilarious thing is that people were defending sony for charging extra to upgrade. now they backed down they all seem to have gone quiet.

Wow, didn't expect it for so long. But i like it.

I think that Sony is applying the 10$ tax on their cross gen games because the PS5 version is not a simple port, they work from the scratch on PS5 to take advantage of the new technology like DS5 support, new audio engine support and better graphics of course.
Sure......

They must hire a whole new squad.

They all require 10/ per hour as well

i'll be holding onto my PS4 for another few year then! no rush to buy a PS5 it seems.
No rush. The trend is the big name franchises will be PS4, PS4 + $10 upgrade as per Jim when you get around to a PS5, and a direct PS5 edition for anyone with a PS5.

Ya, there's some games like Returnal and R&C and Destruction All Stars that are PS5 only, but unless you are desperate for those games, just wait them out.

You got 3-4 years to test out whatever option you want to do. Hell, even Godfall has a PS4 edition now when it was promoted as PS5 only last year.

As a bonus, the longer you wait for a PS5, the higher chance the console gets updated with bigger internal storage. Just like all console do every year or two. By the time you get a PS5, it might be up to 2 TB SSD.

And yet some 3rd party studios do those things for free, so you actually could expect it from first party studios without that 30% cut.

Has anything been shown of the last gen versions of any of those games? I don’t think so.

If you have any examples then please share them.

i'm definitely not considering buy a PS5 until there are Slim/Pro models. so about 2023 maybe at the earliest i guess.

I was thinking about this, no we haven't really seen alot of comparison. I do wonder if in multiplayer modes or multiplayer adjacent modes where you are playing cross-platform and cross-gen, whether you ever would have significant difference to assets/game engine.

It feels a bit weird to have one xsx player seeing a tree in spot and one xbox one player not.

I don't know.

For all I know the hours are the same....

You were the one telling me they required more hours and money to make the game
No hours are not the same. I don’t understand where you take that “hours are the same”.
They are working more hours to implement PS5 technologies on the game.
When I say “extra hours” I mean the hours they work on PS5 version after finishing the PS4 version.
You think that after finishing PS4 version they just flip a switch that says “port to PS5 with better graphics and enable DS5 features please”?

It's cute that people think price is based on cost in the year 2021.

These days price is set by the marketing department, not the accounting department. They set the price and then adjust the budget to meet profit targets, not the other way round.

There's this saying that greedy man loses twice - they wanted 20$ upfront and now they'll give it away totally for free, instead of offering 10$ upgrade from the get-go. And now you can basically get the PS5 version for 60$ lol.

I hear ya.

It's like eco friendly products costing more than the mainstream stuff. Or it's a similar cost but they put in a smaller size.

Most people probably think it's due to this natural eco-friendly stuff being superior in quality and ingredients, of course it costs more.

LOLOL.

This stiff is the highest profit margin products we sell. It often costs LESS than the other products because there's less ingredients, materials and dyes in it. But we jack up the price giving an impression of superior mother nature quality and the retailer jacks up the price to go along with it. lol

What's funny is that third parties do a better job with free PS4 to PS5 upgrade than Sony does.

I don't like this arrogant/basically no Japan Studios Sony.

Still bullshit that other games will have a more expensive PS5 version.

With what reasoning? It's the same game....

Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan has defended the company’s decision to increase software prices for selected first-party PlayStation 5 games.

Launch titles Demon’s Souls and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales Ultimate Edition (which includes Spider-Man Remastered) both have RRPs of $70/£70.

A Sony spokesperson recently pointed out that the $70 price tag was currently reserved for the company’s “biggest” first-party PS5 titles in a strategy “reflective of the growing development resources needed for these ambitious games.” Family titles such as Sackboy: A Big Adventure retail for $60.

And asked by The Telegraph if he considers $70/£70 to be a fair price for a video game, PlayStation boss Ryan said: “Yes, yes, I do. If you measure the hours of entertainment provided by a video game, such as Demon’s Souls compared to any other form of entertainment, I think that’s a very straightforward comparison to draw.”

From reading this I would strongly suspect this was written by a downplaying Xbox fan. (They are used to waiting 3-4 years for anything.):messenger_winking:

But knowing better I would like to remind you my fellow PlayStation fan. 💙

That you forgot Demon's Souls, and brought up turds like Destruction All Star and Godfall that we don't like to talk about. Also Astrobot is inviting you into a fun nostalgia trip into world of PlayStation and showcasing the new DualSense features. DualSense with its innovative haptics add to the immersion of games is also worth a consideration.

As we seen with Miles legs Morales, Crossgen games look pretty sweet on PS5.

Load times are absolutely best in the world so no extra waiting BS. How's that for a quality of life improvement.

Time to jump in is now! Who likes waiting for anything?

I hope Uncle Jim learns a lesson from this. Arrogant fuck.

Sucks to see him spreading his poisonous tentacles into my favourite 1st party.

That should be good timing. Slim model. Probably a bigger SSD. And ya, might even be a PS5 Pro model. By that time, PS4 support should be thinned out as Jim said 3-4 more years of PS4 support from PS5's launch.

I never buy games on release but I'm hoping with $70 being the norm it doesn't take longer for prices to drop. I'm too used to buying games $20 max. I can wait a few years.

Astro, great experience. I platted it in 5 hours.

DeS, I’m legitimately happy for people who either didn’t own a PS3 or were too scrubby to play it the first time around.

How is it fanboyish to highlight that Sackboy, Miles Morales, Horizon, God of War and GT7 are all playable on PS4?

Sony are piorneers it's makes logical sense to charge more for improved graphics. I think on PC we should be charged more if we set the graphics higher it makes sense.

Sony is charging 70 dollars because people are willing to pay 70 dollars.
Why is Persona 5 Royal 80 dollars in Japan and 60 dollars in the US? Because people in America won't pay 80 bucks for a PS4 game.
They don't set the price based on what the budget of the game was, the price is set based on how much they think people are willing to pay.
Games don't cost 15% more to make simply because it is the PS5.

I think i've said twice now that this was just a PR move to calm an angry mob. We knew it wasn't coming until the 2nd half of 2021 all the way back since last year, so i figured that was enough information to know Horizon doesn't fall under the "free upgrade for launch games", since it wasn't, you know, a launch game.

Again, you’re pretending not to know how to read.
The PlayStation blog that talked about ‘launch games’ is not the only source of information. Jim Ryan also gave an interview to Washington Post where the specifically addressed concerns about upgrade paths for Miles Morales and Horizon Forbidden West…and promised free upgrades to PS5. Those games were cited by name. Not a mention of ‘launch’ in that interview.

man up and admit you were wrong and move on.

Still think they are hedging their bets worried about chip shortages and post pandemic economic slowdown. Taxes are about to rise a lot in most countries.

Without those two factors in full effect at the same time you would see the PS5 version of cross generation titles vastly outselling the PS4 version. Sony is doubling down on that strategy because it is what they sold to investors and had decided to do so they will do as much as they can before people forget about the initial decision and they have a good reason to stop cross generation titles.
