Upgrade to Windows 10?

I'll be upgrading and doing a clean install if possible. Been waiting for 10 to come out before buying an SSD.

Will they let me download an .ISO and give me a key or do I gotta do the clean install through Windows?

Similar question here. my Wife's old laptop is getting slow and often thrashes the HDD at 100% for ages at startup, so I want to replace with an SSD and a new Windows 10 install. But I have no key (was reinstalled on laptop when bought). Is there a routine to follow that'll keep things intact when swapping out the drive?

Hopefully they get their shit together fast. Tons of people have been having issues with the new update feature that also allows Windows to update your GPU drivers. Twice now I've booted up with old GPU drivers because Windows was automatically updating to the latest non-beta drivers, whereas Nvidia's only Windows 10 drivers were in beta up until yesterday. I don't like the idea of Windows updating my GPU drivers without my knowledge, especially if it's going to interfere with the ability to use beta drivers. Seems like a simple fix, but I don't know if it's actually been fixed yet.

They also desperately need to clean up the Windows App Store if they plan on utilizing it all this time around. Thing's a bigger disaster than the Google Play Store.

And the Xbox streaming feature has actually gotten worse with the updates. Now it has this feature that automatically turns off streaming if you tab out of the program when it's in fullscreen, and there's no borderless windowed option. There's also three quality settings, and only low and medium do anything. The high setting doesn't seem to do anything at all, making the quality difference between the stream and the original Xbox One footage very noticeable.

And finally, a small issue that I don't understand the existence of. That option that's supposed to change your color scheme based on your wallpaper doesn't work if it's a slideshow. This wasn't an issue in Windows 8.

Edit: Not sure why you would bother with a clean install. You haven't come up with a better solution to something than the people who created that OS. Just install like normal, and delete windows.old

The bolded is an automatic deal breaker for me. If I can't control what hardware drivers get updated at my convenience I won't upgrade. I've had wireless card drivers wreak havoc on my PC, let alone poor GPU drivers. I've simply had too many issues with new drivers being faulty to not have complete control over them. I always install security/stability updates, but too many times hardware drivers are in poor states at first. I think there's a solution to this issue but it's not as straight forward as windows 7, which is unfortunate.

The solution also isn't a simple on/off switch unfortunately. Nothing officially supported by Microsoft. Hopefully they turn this off for GPUs. They didn't introduce it until recently. It doesn't make any sense when AMD and Nvidia have their own third-party programs that do this, and the only people who care enough about GPU performance will know about them beforehand.

Once you’ve upgraded to Windows 10 using the free upgrade offer, you will be able to reinstall, including a clean install, on the same device. You won’t need to purchase Windows 10 or go back to your prior version of Windows and upgrade again.

You’ll also be able to create your own installation media like a USB drive or DVD, and use that to upgrade your device or reinstall after you’ve upgraded.

Yep. I've got a windows tablet that I'll definitely do the free upgrade on to mess with W10. But my desktop? F no. I want to, but I'll wait a few weeks while some issues get ironed out.

So surely this should be an automatic deal fixer?
A tool in Windows 10 that lets you prevent automatic updates if you require.

What is the difference between doing a clean install using installation media, or doing a 'system reset' using the in built Windows tool?

Other than the automatic GPU driver updates, DS4Windows having major issues functioning with Windows 10 is another reason to wait. Even though the 360/Xbone controller is good enough for most games, for some it's not even comparable to the DS4.

Sweet.

There won't be a service pack for Windows 10. Any OS updates will come as regular updates when they're ready.

ack, I knew this and forgot about this.

nevertheless OP, my advice still stands if you're not the type that can deal with bugs, wait for 'stability' in place of 'service pack' there's a whole line of beta testers out there on the internet that will do the job for you if you're not excited about the idea.

I'm super excited about the idea though. just don't own good enough hardware to be worth upgrading now.

It's time for me to clean the fridge. I want to clean install, so this is great news.

I have no idea how it will verify my information that I own a legit copy of Windows after the upgrade, but I suppose i'll see soon enough.

isn't it supposed to be less buggier than windows 8 ?
hence they don't do Service packs anymore.

I blindly believe in microsoft to finally wow us with their windows 10.
They skipped 9 to make 10
So 10 will be bug free

GameGuard and HackShield are not yet compatible, so most games by Nexon and NCSoft and some other Korean F2P games don't work properly.
See, that's the kind of info I was looking for.

Going to look into Vindictus and Guild Wars 2 now.

I'm guessing it might embedd your current windows 7/8 key into a custom made ISO when you opt to do a clean install, I'm planning on doing the same, not did a clean install in 4 years, time to get rid of the gunk!

This might be a really stupid question as I know so little about this. Im upgrading from win 7 will I have to do a clean install or can I keep all my files/programs?

The latest preview build is running perfectly from what I've experienced. It's like running Windows 7 with the improvements of Windows 8. plus the integrated Xbox features are a plus.

You can keep it. But most people prefer to do a clean install because of reasons.

After you upgrade from an older system the new Windows 10 product key is tied to your MS account so if you want to do a clean install just login with your MS account, it will be activated automatically. Keep in mind that the upgrade key is also tied to your current hardware configuration so you can't use it on multiple devices, but you can reinstall whatever times you want as long as you don't change your motherboard and CPU.

In my experience, games run about the same as they did before.
The forced driver updates are a bit annoying. Rather than have a separate troubleshooting tool (as linked up there), they should just allow us to pick and choose drivers updates, unless it's some super critical thing that could compromise the system.

Does anyone know if you can shut this off? I don't want it taking any resources since I know I won't be using it.

You can turn the game dvr off, yes.

What? Does anyone know if dirty bomb works on w10? Been having way too much fun on that game lately, I recommend people check it out. Get bad company 2 vibes, and plays like a cross between counter strike & TF2.

I'm going to wait a few months to see what issues crop up, I'm happy on 8.1 at the moment but I'll have to update eventually for DX12.

Did a clean install. Had some video driver issues initially (would only boot to black screen), but after repeated reboots, was able to enter recovery mode and reinstall. Second time worked, but it was sketchy for a bit. Haven't had the chance to test out many game yet.

I should have waited to do this. I recently bought a new SSD, but decided I just would do a clean install of Windows 7 now and upgrade from there. The problem is the Get Windows 10 app refuses to appear for me. I have authenticated my Windows key and have done all of the Windows updates. I also have gone through all of the fixes I have seen online that other people have used, but no luck.

The annoying thing is on my old install/HDD is the app was there. I'm hoping that once Windows releases tomorrow there will be another way to get it without me just having to buy it.

I must be one of the rare few that liked original Windows 8, I'll be there day one for 10 I guess may as well do it now before those DX12 games come.

I don't even think I'm going to do a clean install. I never did bother with Windows 7 to 8 and didn't seem to suffer..

Check your operating system partition for $windows.~BT and look for the setup

I'm currently installing it

Awesome. Thanks for the info!

Is that sure ? Because that would make me to not upgrade

That's the way it has been in the past. Can be a real pain when you run into it.

That's always been true of OEM and system-builder keys. But I've found that if you call Microsoft and sort of play dumb, they'll give you an updated key for your new build.

That's a real "your mileage may vary" situation. I ran into the issue a few years back after doing a PC build and after about 2 hours on the phone, it was clear to me that no one was going to help me. Though they were happy to pass me over and over to other representatives.

I'll hold off on my gaming machine for a while until I'm sure everything I use works correctly. Namely, I use WiinUSoft to play everything with a Wii U Pro controller because that thing has such great battery life, I have to charge it like once every two weeks whereas the Dualshock 4 is like once every day. I just checked and I already have the files to upgrade with, too.

Eh, I suppose I'll wait a bit too. I really don't want to go back to my X360 controller, so hopefully whoever came up with the DS4 driver tool whatever thing manages to fix it fast

I want to upgrade it as soon as possible, but I'm also playing Dark Souls right now and don't want to mess it up. I've read at some Steam community discussion that it works without problems, but I have my reservations about this. Hope it's alright.

I have my current gaming rig waiting on the install (still on W7) and the HTPC (my previous gaming rig) running W10. I've been gaming exclusively on the old PC running 10 and haven't had any issues running anything.

I'll probably wait a week on my primary PC in case other people run into major issues but I'm not seeing anything on TP build 10240 that should cause concern. Seems faster if anything else.

It's certainly better than W8.1 for mouse and keyboard. If there's no major glitches at launch it's a no-brainer upgrade at $0.

There has been a release build available for about a week, so I've just updated both my laptop and my desktop with 10...
I was apprehensive at first, but it went so well on my laptop it was a no brainer to upgrade my desktop as well...
its the best of 7 with the best of 8.1

How do you reserve your Win 10 key if you are running the tech preview?

All the FAQs and information on Microsoft's site point to the upgrade app available in Win7/8.

I'm currently stuck with a shitty motherboard (AMD FX-8120) and was thinking of upgrading soon. Is the Windows 10 upgrade going to freak out if I do that? I'm not upgrading until the DS4Windows issue is fixed, but I was just curious if switching motherboards would cause any issues.
