Upgrade to Windows 10?

So out of curiosity I have Windows 8 Enterprise installed right now. If I do a fresh install to 8.1 Pro, activate it with the product key and then upgrade to 10 will that work?

I'd say don't upgrade. I've upgraded one laptop and there's too many bugs here, so I'm stopping on the other laptops. My store app doesn't load and the onscreen keyboard doesn't work for my browser. Which means I have to use desktop mode on the tablet to get a keyboard going.

Pretty half-baked.

Thanks! No activation troubles?

Not at all, everything went buttery smooth. I was even able to keep working on my computer until it actually started installing the new files. It automatically transferred all my stuff over, and so far everything is working just like it did on windows 8.1.

Just gone through the upgrade with the Media Creation Tool from 7. Only 3 issues:

  • It won't activate. But from what I read onlines this is just the servers being down.
  • The graphics driver was missing initially but windows update sorted that
  • Razer Synapse needed a repair
All in all a smooth process for me. It finally fixes the issue I had with multi monitor video playback that would cause a weird judder (some windows 7 issue according to the internets).

10 is running like a dream. Just booted up FFXIV and in the busy end zone it was running better than last time (60 fps).

Happy happy.

Edit: Just tried activating there and it worked. Nice.

Thanks again. Im doing it now. Oh yeah.

Posted this in the off-topic thread but I didn't get a response so I figured I would see if I get a response here:

So, I was thinking about upgrading to Windows 10, but I didn't click the reserve button and now its gone. Will I still have the opportunity to upgrade, and if so, how? Also, on my Windows 8.1 installation I have made some registry changes (mouse related, removing mouse acceleration completely). Will these changes carry over to Windows 10 if I do the upgrade?

Thanks

Does anyone else get "We're validating Windows 10 for your PC"? I'm running a Lenovo Y580, I see all the files have been downloaded but the update agent claims Microsoft is still "validating it". I suppose other users of OEM laptops are facing the same.

Well I upgraded and so far so good. I'm not blown away or anything and not noticing too much of a difference yet but i probably don't know enough about the new features.

I updated using the MS executable for the iso. I didn't burn a disk or anything I just mounted the iso with Daemon ran the upgrade and it worked fine.

Anyone check their resource usage? I'm having weird issues where task manager is showing 100% CPU usage though things like RealTemp and such are showing no such thing. Task manager will have a different program running 60+% CPU on me every second from nvidia, teamspeak, edge, task manager itself, razer synapse, and it never ends. I tried to do clean booting but nothing is seemingly resolving this. Played a few games with it pegged out and both the games and other services ran fine.

I'm wondering if there's just an error with task manager's reporting?

I just downloaded it and clicked install. Crazy. Hope i didnt do it wrong.

It's impossible to say unless you click on 'View details' and see what it is.

clicking view details and clean system returns that message... I have antivirus on my computer (Bit defender) and I also have Malwarebytes.

Yes, go here. As for your other question, then the answer is also yes.

For anyone that has issues with installing Nvidia drivers after the upgrade (10 opened with me using a Basic Display Adapter), download the Nvidia drivers. When running these I errored out, it looked like it was working but wasn't. I had to go into Task Manager and get rid of a bunch of Nvidia processes. Stopping them made the driver install work.

Has anyone managed to install multiplatform OBS yet? I'm getting a direct x missing error/prompt and choosing to download it with that prompt doesn't do anything.

Does anyone else get pointer problems when they move the pointer too far to the right? Its almost as if there's more to the right of my screen I can't see, and the pointer just keeps going over.

what did you input for serial key?

just wondering how people got updated 8.1 -> 10 keys that worked for this, my OEM 8.1 key [legit, of course] didn't work :/

If you download the ISO, mount it, and then run the 'setup.exe' from within your current Win8.1 installation, you should be fine.

Drivers are tricky, but I believe the installer will check to see if there are any known hardware issues before proceeding, so you should get an idea on if everything will continue working.

thanks for the help!

Never got a prompt for a key. I did the upgrade not clean install, kept everything. It says activated. I am getting an ssd soon and will reinstall clean there but from my understanding you should do upgrade first.

I'm certain though if you are stuck you can call MS give em your 8.1 key and they will sort it.

Upgrade or fresh? If upgrade - it's not perfect.

If you upgrade it shouldn't ask for serial. Unless you upgrade to the wrong version. 8.1 pro must be upgraded to 10 pro.

If you're legit and activated, you won't be asked for a key.

?

how's that possible.

my pc [bought from ncix, paid them to build it for me too] came with 8.1 [oem, of course], and i was asked for a serial key.

mind you, i also got the "something happened" error when trying to do the upgrade option through the media tool.

downloading now through windows update anyway - cmd prompt method worked after the 1000th attempt.

edit: to be clear, upgrade option gave SH error, this was me trying the installing from mounted .iso method if that changes anything.

Windows Defender will deactivate itself if a dedicated antivirus solution is installed. My guess is that BitDefender is not fully compatible with Win 10 yet. I would remove BitDefender until they update their software.

Malwarebytes should not affect this. As far as I know it does not connect to Windows at core level.
