Upgrade to Windows 10?

Upgraded but my 2nd monitor wouldn't work and the resolution of the other one was messed up. Tried updating drivers but Nvidia experience wouldn't connect and installing the driver I downloaded from their website kept failing. So I said fuck it and reverted back to Windows 7. I'll try again in like 6 months or something maybe MS/Nvidia will get their shit together or maybe I won't. I really didn't care for what I saw in the small glimpse that I had of the OS.
I had same issue and I deleted program files/nvidia corporate or something then the install would work (remember to end all nvidia processes)

Games working so far based on this topic are:

SKYRIM with ENB
Witcher 2 and 3
All Arkham games
Fallout 3 and NV
Diablo 3
Battlefield 4
Arma 3
GtA V
Oblivion

Not working so far:
Metal Gear GZ

Need to know if working

Assassins Creed Unity
Crysis
Crysis 2
Crysis 3
Crysis Warhead
Ultra Street Fighter 4

They all work. You didn't even check the link I posted.

Gtx 970 driver failed to install so I restarted. HUGE FUCKING mistake. Black screens after the windows logo and I can't do shit, this is literally the biggest headache I have ever had with windows. I have almost broke my keyboard as the BIOS is being extremely unresponsive when I hit delete to enter the bios.

Do you have something plugged in HDMI ? Not with Windows 10 but back when I installed windows 8 for the first time two of my screen stayed black (both screen plugged in DVI) and my TV was plugged in my card HDMI and at first it just activated my TV and let my 2 DVI screen black. I was going crazy until I turned on my TV and saw my display being there (I just use my TV to watch tv shows so it's not on when I normally use my PC)

I'm confused as to what you're encountering. I've got a gigabyte motherboard and seemingly nothing changed after the upgrade. What were you encountering and what did you uninstall?

I uninstalled this http://www.gigabyte.com/MicroSite/185/on-off-charge.htm.

That software wasn't allowing my pc to shut down, my pc would automatically restart if I tried to shut it down, and if I chose to manually restart my pc would always get an error while trying to restart. On top of that my pc would also take over 5 mins to start up/reach the desktop with that software installed. I searched the error applecharger.sys I kept getting and found out the issue was linked to that gigabyte software. After removal I can now normally restart or shut down my pc and boot up times are like 40 secs now compared to over 5 mins.

I'm so glad these things also go relatively smoothly for me, can't believe the amount of problems people are having to deal with ;s

I still haven't received the update. This is all I get....

Finally got Windows 10 to install through Windows Update. Had to run the repair tool to get WU back up and running. This OS is great though. Just waiting for games to install.

Also that feeling when you sign on to GAF and notice the "Ask me anything" bar does not line up with GAF.

Windows 10 pls :(

>mfw 14 hours of trying to troubleshoot my PC which got fucked over by Win10 not agreeing with my video driver until I had to revert back to my previous build.

I had the same issue with my display drivers. I resolved it by running Guru3D Display Driver Uninstaller in safe mode to completely delete all driver files. After a reboot, new Nvidia display drivers installed properly

Aside from my own stupidity with the display port Nvidia driver issue, the upgrade was flawless for me. Took about 10 minutes total with a clean installation. I'm installing my programs and getting used to things but I'm really digging it so far!

I can't restart, revert, reset, or shut down the pc. Ever since I upgraded to Win 10 I get a error applecharger.sys. Can't do anything.

After a quick google search, you might have a Gigabyte program called "ON/OFF" that uses the "applecharger.sys" driver for Apple Connections. Try to get rid of that program and you should be good.

You can make a physical Windows 10 install DVD using the media creation tool for free

Can you use the media disc to upgrade other machines without having to download Windows 10 to each machine?

One of my machines I upgraded today has an odd issue. It still plays a mix of the old Windows 7 notification noises mixed with the Windows 10 ones. I tried to set them in the sounds option but they are still mixed.

Okay so after I installed Win10 the NVidia recording icon has a slash in it. You know the icon on the bottom right hand corner of the screen that let's you know that you're recording. Is that normal how do you get rid of it?

Is anybody having error 0x3fb on the Xbox app? I can't log in and it keeps telling me to try again later.

I'm having so many issues with Win10 that I might as well go back to 8.1

Try this. Open up command line and type "ipconfig /flushdns" to reestablish connections. There's multiple fixes, but apparantly it has something to do with timezones being out of sync.

Has anyone noticed the process "Runtime Broker" running 100% of the time with 10-15% CPU (on a 5820K @ 4.5Ghz in my case)? My CPU won't idle and down clock because of the aforesaid process. It's affecting gaming, and I'd very much like to disable it, or at least understand why it's behaving as it is. It can't be normal.

I saw that and a few others but none have worked.

Might as well list the other issues I have in hopes there's a better "fix" than to wipe my system.
  • Can't sign into Windows Store.
  • Can't open Edge without it telling me that my trial has expired.
  • Can't open Feedback without it telling me that my trial has expired.
  • Device limit email.

Can we do the CLEAN install by just unziping the ISO file and runing the setup? I tried creating a boot usb with the iso and the other option, none of them work.

Still getting the SAFE_OS error followed by a reboot back into Win7. Despite that the installation hasn't even finished, I've already lost 20 GB of space on my drive from the process. WTF...

This is the most frustrating upgrade experience I've ever had with an OS. Even the various Linux distros I've upgraded in the past never gave me so much trouble.

Here you go GAF I got bored and took 2 minutes out of my time to make this for all you having installation issues:

Yes I purposely used a Tim Buckley Comic due to the infamy he has by some members here

I'm on the same boat, Windows Update doesn't show anything Windows 10 related either.

I have the 6.2Xgb folder ready to go.

EDIT: so after looking on the update log I have this
x063REp.png

So I suppose it has been trying to get it installed.

When I had that earlier it's because when windows update was downloading it was download 2.3 GB and for some reason I guess it wasn't the whole file I deleted everything in C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download then I ran windows update and with the window open in command prompt (right click run as admin) wuauclt.exe /updatenow and the download was 5.7 GB and then it installed.

Steam and Nvidia Control Panel both look blurry to my eyes. Desktop res is set to my native resolution (1080p). The actual desktop looks fine. Strange that these two look blurry.

It seems like a common problem just googling it

There is a long summary here

What is RuntimeBroker.exe and Why is it Running?

And a shorter explanation here

Runtime broker is part of the security subsystem of Universal Apps (then called Metro apps). Essentially, all access to files and other resources goes through the Runtime broker.. so what this means is that it's only accessing files on the behalf of another Universal app. This is probably something like the Photos app or something that searches through indexed files and catalogs them, or indexes them.

You should use something like FileMonitor to see what it's actually accessing if you're interested.

I have it too but it sits at 0% usage

Then I'll give it a shot following those steps,it is already too late, I seriously wanted to have everything done by today : (

Open Start --> Settings --> System.
Under "Change the size of text, apps, and other items," slide the slider to 100%, save, log off, and log back in.

I just built a new PC yesterday. I have done a ton of updates with Windows 8.1 and today have finished up doing every update to the point where it says I no longer have any. So when am I supposed to get the option to reserve an upgrade to Windows 10? Should it have shown up already? Should I be worried about the copy of Windows 8.1 that I bought off Reddit not being genuine?

I've been trying to run the Media Creation Tool to install, and every single time it says "Downloading" and goes all the way to 100%... then it shuts down and says, "Setup couldn't start properly." Then says to try rebooting.

It does this... every. single. time.

Any idea what I'm doing wrong here?

Thanks in advance.

Install took about 20 minutes, everything upgrades perfectly without a single error. Only had it for about a half hour, but it seems great so far.

So Windows 10 runs great aside from games, which is the main damn thing i use my computer for. Super Hexagon runs at like 15 fps lmao which it absolutely should not seeing as it can run on a toaster and I have a 560ti. CSGO wont even load at all even though it is installed.

Also, i think my activation is boned. I upgraded from legit windows 7 but i didnt actually click "activate" i just assumed once i upgraded that win10 was now attached to my MS account. Apparently its not, because it is saying my key is blocked (after doing some googling i apparently only have a generic key whatever the fuck that means)

Am i boned?

IMPORTANT NOTE IF YOU ARE SEEING THIS
Anyone else with custom-built PC's getting something like this:

Do I need to clear my Software Distribution folder and force the update, or should I wait?

The check it does seems to think I'm ready... so I dunno what the holdup is.

DO NOT go and wipe your download folder. While that may work for some people, it doesn't work for everyone, as the upgrade process is complex with a ton of different phases and multiple reasons why it may or may not work.

You'll likely end up causing more problems than you solve.

INSTEAD

Follow the instructions here:

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...0/d695e827-9774-4e10-8972-df8d51a7bb51?auth=1

This is an expected message indicating that when installation begins it may require user interaction. This is the largest software upgrade event ever and we’re managing it so everyone has a great experience. We recommend waiting until your PC receives a notification to upgrade, and then following the instructions provided.

Please note that there is no problem with your reservation or upgrade download. The upgrade download is not corrupt as some have stated, and you will be notified in the coming days or weeks when your device is ready to upgrade.

If you are very eager to upgrade, tech savvy users with the above message can modify the following registry key to install immediately.

Warning: Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Before you modify it, back up the registry for restoration in case problems occur.

1.Locate the registry key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\OSUpgrade]

2.It should exist, but if not, create it.

3.Create a new DWORD (32-bit) Value with Name = "AllowOSUpgrade” (without the quotes), and set the Value = 0x00000001.

Once the registry key is modified, close and reopen the desktop Control Panel, go to Windows Update and check for updates. You should now be able to click the Get Started button to upgrade to Windows 10. Note: Windows 8.1 users must go to the desktop Control Panel, and not the modern Windows Update UI.”

By doing this, not only are you avoiding re-downloading the entire thing with the Media Creation Tool, but you are also avoiding a lot of potential headaches.

The error code does not mean that there was a problem with the download. It simply means that you weren't eligible to install it yet.

Use this tool, worked for me and a lot of other people
As far as the key goes, I think someone on GAF recently said those cheap reddit keys were not genuine? or some of them? I think it was in a discussion about a gaffer selling keys that turned out to be not genuine after a few months? might have been in this thread from a few weeks ago

Thanks! Yes, it seems to be a fairly common problem, though one I've never had before with previous versions of Windows, or with any of the Windows 10 preview builds. I'm using FileMonitor to try and pinpoint what's triggering it, but haven't found anything so far. I'm also uninstalling every Metro app I can find hoping to find the culprit. In any case, I'll continue working on it, and will update my post once I find a solution.

Not sure this will solve anything but maybe try to run it as Admin?

It seems this process can also have very high memory usage, so it's not only a CPU usage problem
Did you use a fresh install or an upgraded version?
