Day 1 upgrade for me
So Win 10 is more efficient than 7.
But is Win 10 more efficient than 8.1? All of the stuff they're jamming it with such as Cortana and XboxOne stuff seem to be system-based, but I have no interest in turning my PC into an extension of a console. I just want an even more efficient version of Win 8.1.
Yes you should be happy.
All the touch friendly and tablet focused stuff are optional toggles this time, so it really is the best of both worlds on that front.
I have Windows 7 OEM which came with my Mobo and still no icon, are they rolling out the update on a region by region basis?
Can't you use your Windows 7 key and redownload or reinstall the OS on another partition?

So they're making this free to try and plug the loss of users to OSX right?
Not because the NSA and MS worked out a deal...
That's good to hear. I might do the switch.Benchmarks seem to show Win10 uses less memory and uses CPU better than Windows 8.1. WDDM2.0 is meant to be way more efficient as well FWIK.
I did have a problem with the Preview of pro 10 recognizing my LAN driver though.
I'm sure this has already been discussed, but how's the performance in Windows 10 versus 8.1, particularly for AMD? Is there a noticeable improvement in most games, or is it roughly the same?
(I also realize DX12 is supposed to bring about huge changes, but no games use it yet.)

I just hope upgrading from 8.1 is pretty much treated like a Service Pack, and not some massive, clean install thing. I am not willing to pour through all of the programs I use via and retweak each and every one from a reinstall, and I do know most of my games even require registry and config edits to have them running for my setup.
tl;dr - Clean installs are only for new computers.
The Slow Ring is okay, but the Fast Ring is really really bad right now.
Crashes everywhere, missing PIN login, consistent errors at shutdown.
it's unstable because it's still in development, what did you expect?
So, you felt it necessary to point out that pre-release beta software isn't always stable for everyone?
Myself and plenty of other people have been having issues. With the millions of potential set ups out there, people will always have it either better or worse than your situation.
Yeah. I actually didn't have any issues myself necessarily. I was on 10 Insider preview for about a week before I rolled back to Windows 7 because I decided to pick up a 980 Ti and there are no current drivers for that card on Windows 10.
What things specifically did you have trouble with? I am likely going to wait a few weeks to see how everything goes before moving over from 7.
Won't give advice going forward, check.
This thread is brutal.
Alt-tabbing from a fullscreen process is a real pain, driver issues, crashes, and general stuff to expect from a preview OS.

No it's free because they want people to finally leave windows 7
Hey does anybody know that, if I am currently running windows 8.1 pro, and I sign up for the preview, I will be able to get windows 10 pro or will it forget that I had 8.1 pro?
Goddamn PIN login better be there at launch.
Also, can I expect to gain a few fps in existing games dx9-d11 with wddm2.0? I have no idea how it works.
While it may not be stable right off the bat, as with all Windows releases, you might as well upgrade. Windows 7 support will drop off, and will leave you with vulnerabilities adblock/noscript can't block.

Uhh, there are much easier ways for them to punch holes in their OS's security than giving away a new version and forfeiting the potential revenue it would have brought in.
Why would they want just that?
Why would they want just that?
Because it's not a product they're actively developing or selling and not directly integrated with any of the services that they're hoping to turn into revenue streams.
I think that i accidently reserved was win 10.
hpe it doesn't upgrade me i want to stay on 8.1

If they wanted to, I bet they could easily put up Windows 7 for sale. They don't want to, and really want you to upgrade...
Using my hotmail email password to log to Windows?
No thanks! Of course I can create an offline user account, but I dont like where things are going.
What kind of stuff for the window management? For gaming there's native game DVR which is really cool, and a fully featured Xbox app/DirectX12 support
All of the annoying Windows 8 stuff is gone or better integrated and the new start menu is fairly customizable.
The upgrade is free so why not? Lots of under the hood changes and performance improvements too, and actual great improvements to window management
I haven't seen that ? Is that true ?
Pro/Ultimate -> Pro. Home/Premium -> Home. Enterprise -> Enterprise.
Brutal? Please. They're just pointing out pre-release (your current experience and basis for advice) vs actual final version (that OP will get).
