Upgrade to Windows 10?

I have tried literally everything to make that icon appear, but to no avail. Gonna just wait till July 29 and see if there's some manual way of upgrading after that.

I have Windows 7 and got the option for the free upgrade but, I would like to know if my 3 year old laptop can handle the OS. I would hate to upgrade and my Laptop ends up being slower. Is there anyway to know if my specs which aren't the best can handle it?

On the popup there is a section that tells you if there would be any problems, I assume it would be in there?

Win8 had less system requirements than Win7, I don't think that Win10 will need more than Win8. You should be fine.

I see it where it says No issues were found during our scan. I guess this means it will work!

This is good to hear. Thank you both for answering so quick!

I'm running Windows 8.1 on a 5yr old laptop (with SSD) and it runs great. I don't think your 3yr old machine will have too much trouble with Windows 10.

So,

Bought Windows 8 with the infamous 14$ deal on MS store back in the day.
That counts as a full license i can transfer to a new PC in case i upgrade, right ?

A few days ago my PC got stuck in the recovery loop, so I had to reinstall. My key would not work for 8, so I called Microsoft. I spoke with three CSRs (two Tier 1, one Tier 2) and each of them told me that the Windows 8 upgrade license I got back then was "one time use only." I asked if that would be the same deal when going from 7 or 8 to 10 and they told me yes.

So now I'm back on Windows 7 until 10 comes out. At least I can upgrade from 7 to 10, but otherwise I had never heard of that upgrade being one time use only, otherwise I probably never would have done it.

Thanks for the replies. Still unsure whether to upgrade, but it is tempting.

My gf runs a MacBook Air (about 12 months old) with a win 7 boot camp partition. Is there any news on when this will support windows 10?

Been using Windows 10 for the past two months now, mine upgraded to the RTM version last week. It runs flawlessly. Absolutely loving it.

Uh, I've been running the windows 10 preview without issue. Install the latest 8.1 Bootcamp drivers from Apple and your touchpad etc. Should work.

Alternatively install it via Parallels, and run it virtually.

I'm all ready for the update, but I'm gonna hold off a week or so, to make sure there aren't any crazy weird complications to games.

Seems unlikely, but still seems alright to be cautious.

I'm going to trial it for a while on my laptop to see how it goes. It all comes down to how smooth the transition is in terms of program / driver compatibility.

If it's silky smoov (ie that goes well and online reports are positive), I'll see how it goes on my desktop in a week or two.

I really hope most of my games don't need to be reinstalled.

Depends on driver support. Some manufacturers don't provide driver support outside of their new models. I think you can roll it back to Windows 7/8 though if it doesn't work.

I'll be upgrading, thus far it has only found one issue with installed programs. And that program isn't necessary for me, so I'll give it a crack.

Do I need to find my Windows 7 cd key for the upgrade or is it ready to go? Will it replace Windows 7 install files? Running low on space.

It will know your cd key automatically. When you install it youll get the option to keep files or do a fresh install etc.

yeah I wanna know that too before I upgrade.

Haven't faced any issues in the few days I have been running Windows 10. Everything runs smooth game wise so far.

I have my copy reserved, whatever that means. I'm not sure when I get to upgrade though.

I'm going to wait a week or two to see if any unexpected issues arise, but I guess a lot of those have been sorted in the preview program. Hopefully everything is good.

Just saw a W10 TV ad claiming it's out now, what's up with that?

It's possible that there are desktop/laptops out in the wild at retail that have 10 pre-installed at this point.

I'm pretty sure machines have always been available with a new a Windows ahead of the just the software release.

I believe so, you already are running the RTM release. But I am sure tomorrow even the preview member will get small update.

I'm confused. How will things go down on the 29th? I have one PC running the insider preview but how can I get Windows 10 on my other computers? Does the insider preview turn full retail and stay Pro on the 29th? Should I just put the insider preview on all of my PCs?

Inform me GAF, of my ignorance here...if I update is it like refreshing my whole PC with a new OS where I have to reinstall everything or is it more like downloading an update where I keep all my programs but the OS changes to something new?

Because I'd just rather not lose all my files if I decide to upgrade...

I'm pretty sure my Win 7 is bootlegged. I bought a PC from a local builder, and I'm 99% sure he installed a cracked copy. I'm probably paying for an upgrade, right?

1. Any issues with emulators?
2. Any issues with ds4s?

A lot of other apps I have I know won't be compatible yet, but I am willing to part with 7 if those above aren't a problem.

huh? What is so confusing here.

Your inside preview should already have the moet close build. I believe its the RTM release. On 29th you should. probably get at least 1 update. At least thats what I think. You wont have to install the whole thing again.

On your other PC whenever Windows 10 is publically available it will come as a full install. I know date is 29thbut they will rolling in waves, no idea who will get first.

I'm gonna wait a few days or a few hours before upgrading, just to see what issues people are having. If its good I'll upgrade.

Ok, for some reason I thought that non-genuine W7 users would also be able to upgrade to W10 for free.

There was some talk that they could earlier this year, but apparently it simply wasn't true

The Win10 upgrade software is a normal Windows installer, right? I need a new SSD to replace my old slightly faulty one and install 10 on the new one, I've never fooled around with cloning so I'm wondering if I can just plug the new one in right before the upgrade process, and choose to install the Windows on that one plus format the old one

For your other PC's, you should run the reservation update app should be on each of them. That essentially opts-in that PC to be updated. However, with that process, MS is doing a slow roll-out. You very likely won't get the update on the 29th automatically. If you want them all updated day one, then just see what official manual options MS will have available on the 29th.

For your existing PC, it will stay in the insider program (the next Win10 release is rumored for October/November). I imagine that next month they will start rolling out preview updates to people in the insider program. If you want to remove yourself from the preview program, assuming you did an upgrade over a genuine copy of Windows 7 or Windows 8, then you can go into Settings -> Windows Update and choose to stop receiving preview builds. If you did a clean install, or don't have a genuine copy then you will need to enter a genuine CD key, or else your copy will be marked non-genuine (I don't know specifically what that entails though).

Yup, sadly. You could report them to MS for selling pirated software if you have proof of buying a new PC and it not coming with a valid Windows license.

Did anybody's Chrome flash video get stuttery? How do I fix this? It's fine in the Edge browser.

Using Chrome, no issues here. Check drivers?

Updated Windows 10 tonight with the new update that fixes the error people were getting a few days ago with Explorer..I was wondering how I can find color and appearance on windows 10 I want to change the color of the taskbar..also, how can I check to see what version of windows 10 I have people seem to always be checking after every update

Got a laptop that literally will not update anymore smh. So its stuck at 8.1 unless I do a clean install...which apparently I can't even do. Its really weird...some specific windows update won't play ball with my system. Apparently Staples will be installing Win10 for free so I may just have them do it then.

Dude, 8 isn't anywhere close to the catastrophy that was Vista.

The only thing wrong with Win 8 is Metro and the lack of a start menu. Both are very easily fixed within a few minutes.

And even then lacking a start menu was not really wrong, I mean gotta live with the times, start menu is useless when you can access pretty much anything you want with the windows 8 search. Why would I want the start menu when I got everything pinned on Metro/Desktop? Lol

The latter. The former is called a clean install, which you can do after the upgrade if you want, but just the general upgrade will keep files.

New to PC is there a way I can move all my steam games to an external hard drive then do clean install? I'd hate to download everything again.

You can, but you'd be better off avoiding the hassle altogether and simply upgrading, allowing you to leave your games where they are.
