Upgrade to Windows 10?

So, actually I'm on Windows 8.1. Do I need to update and then do a clean install to get my Windows 10 Key, or can I directly do a clean install by using the Media Creation Tool ?

To get the Win10 license for your PC configuration you need to do an upgrade of an activated copy of Win7 or Win8. After that you may format the drive and install Win10 from scratch - it will be activated automatically by the activation system based on the key stored for your hardware configuration from the upgrade.

I have heard that the key is stored in your MS account several times but I don't think that this is correct. The key is stored in the activation service for your specific h/w configuration.

Yup. They removed text size only scaling. It's all or nothing. fudging morons. Ticks me off so much.

I changed that a little care to explain what you just said?
I use a surface pro and the scaling was never that great in 8.1

Is it any better in 10 ?

thanks in advance

Basically, in order to change your text size, you have to change the size of everything else, icons and everything. In other versions of Windows, you can choose to just change the text size. You can't here. For me, this is a pretty egregious omission/cut feature.

The virtual desktops are soooo good. I'm glad we're finally getting those on windows.

The only thing that's missing is a shift+windows+ctrl+left/right arrow to move the current window to the next desktop.

I'm just using the media creation tool now to create a USB stick so I can install Win 10 release on my Desktop and Laptop. Been using the Insider builds in VMWare (on OSX) for months and I've really enjoyed the experience.

Next step is have the partition clone from my Win 7 install finish. (Mostly just concerned about game saves, I use the OS X disk for everything else)

Ouch that is quite a function if you have some problems with reading small text but don't want the rest of your icons getting huge!

Agreed pretty stupid

Oh for fuck's sake

Separate display scaling though, right? Biggest problem with surface pro when extended to a second monitor. Either the surface screen is tiny, or the external monitor is massive.

Anyone tried a DualShock 4 with the finished release yet?

It's the only thing holding me back so any observations would be very much appreciated. I'm using DS4Windows and there's been lots of talk of "it doesn't work/it works don't worry" so any first hand experience would help me decide if I should wait a while.

I mean I know I should wait anyway, but I'm a sucker for a new OS. ;)

Can't open the Nvidia Control Panel. Didn't try to install drivers manually though, will try it later.

So far, so good. If I run into any troubles, I'll do a clean install later, for now I'll keep using the upgraded version.

So what happens if you change your hardware configuration then install from scratch?

That seems to be in here, but both of my monitors aren't equal so it wouldn't really help me to test it out.

What am I missing?

Wow. That's pretty fucking terrible.

Ok, so if I wish to switch from a 3.5" HDD to a SSD for my OS, will I be able to do a clean install and my key will still works ?

Umm maybe go to advanced settings and you will see you can rezize all stuff seperate.

It´s Display settings -- Advanced Display settings then advanced sizing of text and other things, yeah i know like alot of the stuff it´s hidden a bit to deep. :/

If I'm using the preview will updating to the rtm build (which it gets through Windows update) be enough or do I have to do a fresh install?

But that's for EVERYTHING, not JUST Text.

And so is this: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/make-the-text-on-your-screen-larger-or-smaller?v=t

Windows gives you three preset choices (100%, 125%, or 150%) for making text, icons, and other items on your screen larger than normal size. This is the quickest and simplest way to change their size. But if you prefer, you can change their size to any number between 100% and 500% of normal size using the custom dots per inch (DPI) scale.

Why is everyone bothered about upgrade icon.

Just download the ISO, mount the ISO, launch the setup and itll upgrade you to 10 and be activated.

Still haven't received the upgrade notification.

Anyone else in the same boat?

Yeah me too. I moved the files in softwaredownload, entered the prompt in admin mode, windows update downloaded windows 10 and... said I had to check something before upgrading. Now I'm back with the 'thanks for opting in, we are checking your hardware' message.

Anyone in Canada have this go through Windows Update? Haven't seen a single thing yet that would indicate it's downloading. That Windows 10 icon in the taskbar is no longer there, and the only thing I have in Windows Update is: "Windows 10 upgrade reserved. We'll let you know when the upgrade is ready to be installed on this PC." Then it has a "learn more" link, but clicking it does nothing.

I didn't get an email or "notice". I just clicked on the windows icon in the tray and it allowed me to install windows 10. I'm on the east coast though.

All my screencaps are from Windows 10, and thats where the custom scaling option is? It does the exact same thing.

No, it doesn't. What you showed is there in Windows 8.1, along with what I showed.

Reddit-Trick worked, downloaden and installed, took forever to complete the upgrade though. 2.5hours atleast.
Now to test all the settings and gameperformance :D

I'm reading online that there is some overly broad rights for Microsoft in the terms and conditions and that Windows 10 basically sends every teeny tiny little thing you do to Microsoft to be stored on their Servers. They can and will under their own suspicion report you to authorities if they think you are doing anything they don't like. Not to break out the tin foil hat cause I'm generally not like that but I was afraid of this... I'm going to sit this initial upgrade out and wait to see what comes of the glaring privacy issues. People expected it to be scaled back a bit for the final product but apparently it hasn't been. :/

After like an hour struggling to update, I decided to download the the ISO. Not even sure why I didn't do that in the first place.
