Upgrade to Windows 10?

So apparently Windows 10 sends out your WIFI passwords among other details. Saw Jonathan Blow tweet about it:

Something to do with Windows 10's "Wifi Sense" sharing your password with facebook / outlook / skype contacts

WiFi Sense will automatically connect you to detected crowdsourced WiFi networks, acquire network information and provide “additional info” to networks that require it (it’s not clear exactly what constitutes additional info), and can be used to automatically share your WiFi password with your contacts on Facebook, Skype, and Outlook.

That last feature is the potentially controversial one. WiFi Sense is enabled by default in Build 10240 of Windows 10; if you choose “Express Settings,” Microsoft enables the option and allows your device to acquire WiFi passwords from friends and shares your password with the same group of people. If you choose to leave the function enabled (or turn it on manually, as shown below), it will request permission to connect to Outlook, Skype, and Facebook on your behalf. Other users on your friends list who also run Windows 10 will have their contact information shared with you as well, assuming they also enable the feature.

The link tells you how to disable it. Also some Windows apps have ads... fun

If you first upgrade and then choose to clean install, as im planning mobo change. At what point does it ask for the key? Ive read about signing into your ms account but for win 8.1 pro ive only ever used a local account profile. So im guessing you just input your win 8 key?

It asks for the key right before it installs, then right before the user customization before reaching the desktop.

Nobody knows how the key is tied to hardware yet. so a mobo change maybe not a good idea after upgrading to 10. Best to do the mobo change first then upgrade to 10, then fresh install 10. 10 will not accept 8.1 keys. You must transfer the license with the upgade, and then when it asks for serials on the fresh install of 10, you just skip.

erm when you get to the set up windows it asks you about all this and connecting to hot spots etc and asks if u want it disabled

So I upgraded to windows 10 and I'm in the Xbox app and there is no button called "connect" that allows me to stream Xbox one. Upsetting :(

Finally installed Windows 10, but I can't open Nvidia Control panel. Also Firefox is really sluggish (youtube videos lag), although Microsoft Edge works perfect, but I want to use Firefox.

Do a clean install of a recent Nvidia driver, should fix the Control Panel.

So I don't have a Microsoft Account as far as I know and I'm going to Reset just in case once I get home (which will hopefully remove all the Asus shovelware off my laptop) for performance sake and peace of mind.

Where do I create a Microsoft Account to make sure my OS is registered under that account?

Please help :(

Are you ok with deleting everything from the disk? If so, bring up the prompt with Shift + F10, then DISKPART, list disk, select disk # (# being the number of the disk you want to install, of course), then clean.

Should make it available.

I've only did this with HDDs though, it shouldn't make a difference if it's an SSD, but can't guarantee it'll work.

Progress report. I've manually rebooted as some people have suggested, but it still seems to be hanging as soon as I start back up. :/

You have to manually share each password

FUD starts about 10 seconds in ...but jonathan blow is an %$#@ so

Thankyou so much, this has worked.

Apparently not if you choose the express setup, so claims the article

well duh thats like anything express gives you everything

nvidia driver choose express installs everything,

if you want control of things etc its natural you would press custom

I was really iffy on this as well but decided to bite the bullet and upgraded last night. I tried using the DS4 natively on The Witcher since I heard of the DS4Windows/InputMapper issues and it worked without issue, then I decided to fire up InputMapper and to my surprise I was able to enable exclusive mode to hide the DS4 and all of my custom macros for The Witcher worked without any hints of double-input issues. Not sure if it works out this well for everyone, but it seems problem-free for me.

The only issue I had with the upgrade was needing to perform a clean install of my NVidia drivers, but after doing so I was able to increase my 3DMark FireStrike graphics score from 29294 to 30697 with no flickering/artifacting issues encountered in The Witcher and Dirty Bomb when I tested those last night (limited playtime anyways, but no immediate apparent issues).

Sold!! Taking the plunge as we speak.

How does this work if you have multiple computers/keys and use the same account?

so far I could only upgrade one, but I had that one on ''preorder'' so to speak for several months. the other one keeps getting failed update
I do like windows 10. I would like more toolbars on edge. my only complaint so far

Tried to download the ISO twice and upon completion it gave the "Something happened" error. Not even sure what the fuck is happening.

I am getting the same thing. Every avenue I take to try and activate the update always ends up at "something happened, something happened". It's hilariously frustrating

So just hit skip?

My install never asked for a key, it did everything on it's own.

I'd say skip it for now, and hope it does everything when you sign in after the install.

There Is a whole lot of fun stuff I turned off by not doing an Express Installation. I don't know why any sane person would go through this trouble to get this OS and then not configure it. Almost all of the things they try to default, I would assume most here would want to turn off.

Haven't gotten any kind of message prompt yet but I checked my Windows Updates and there were two instances where "Update to Windows 10" is listed and it states that the update failed.

Should I not concern myself about that or?

Ugh. I can't use my 8.1 Pro key to activate Windows 10 pro for some reason? I thought you were just gonna have to install 10, put in your 8.1 Key and presto.

Edit: Not that there seem to be any immediate downsides to not having Win10 activated yet, I suppose it'll pop up on Dreamspark within the week as well, so I can just grab a new 10 specific key.

Having the same issue, apparently quite a few people have that but im unaware of a solution.

So I seem to have a pretty major issue right now.

My touchpad on my laptop doesn't work.

I've got a mouse so it's not unusable, but it's very annoying.

You sure you didn't do the classic double-tap corner? Is there a light on near the touchpad? :p

Edit: FFS Microsoft -
If you formatted or replaced your hard drive, you won't be able to use a product key to update to Windows 10. You'll need to install your previous version of Windows, and then reinstall Windows 10.

Why won't you just put the 7/8.1 Keys on a global list and let people do shit the easy way?

Note: You can't format and clean install without getting a key first. After installation it recognizes Windows 10 as non-activated. I never received a serial key. Apparently you need to upgrade first, and then you can get your key for use in the media creation tool for a clean install.

I had it too. You can download it manually if you want it asap https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

W10 tries to use an advanced profile for certain touchpads/drivers. Check with your manufacturer.

I've got a custom laptop so checking manufacturers is a bit difficult.

I fixed it though, fucked with the drivers and restarted. Seems to have done the job.

When i look at update history it says failed "Upgrade to windows 10 pro"

I found out what's going on. Upgrade is staggered, like some suspected. Soon your windows 10 icon tool will tell you that the release is staged and you'll be notified when your upgrade is ready.

Mine didn't have it either at first. 20 minutes later with a couple times shutting the app down and starting it up it appeared.

Regarding Nvidia drivers, how does this work? I uninstalled my driver, now, when I install the os it will install new drivers too, can I stuck with those or do I need to manually download them again from Nvidia site to avoid issues?

Windows 10 automatically installs a borked version of 353.62 once you install. Sometimes it breaks displays or control panel. A clean driver install after W10 finishes is recommended.

If you don't want to wait, you can bypass the wait.

Yep.

Oh well, 8.1 install didn't take so long and the final Windows 10 install went by rather fast.

For those who see the failed update...don't worry

If you want to make sure you don't have issues wait for your computer to tell you it is ready...otherwise you are playing with fire a bit

So it was running for me but I was asked to start the PC again. Now it's stuck at the circling dots startup for 30 minutes already. HDD is still working, so something is happening.

Yep.

Does it matter at all if I never got the Reserve Windows 10 popup?

Can you get into safe mode or recovery?

So I seem to have a pretty major issue right now.

My touchpad on my laptop doesn't work.

I've got a mouse so it's not unusable, but it's very annoying.

Mine didn't work properly so I went to the manufacturer's website (Asus) and downloaded the drivers. It wasn't completely non-functional though. Is yours showing up in Device Manager?

Nope. Tried that. The entire 8gb update downloaded and i got the "We need to check your device" screen, then I was bounced back into waiting for the update. I few people are having this problem.

Make sure your copy of Windows 8.1 is completely up to date before attempting.

Does it matter at all if I never got the Reserve Windows 10 popup?

No, I just forced it on a computer that never reserved a copy.

Okay, sweet. Time to downgrade to 8.1 then back to 10 with a properly activated key then :lol. Should never have bothered with the RTM build, then I'd ge good to go already.
