Upgrade to Windows 10?

I lost the Windows 10 icon on one of my machines while trying to get the update to download. It seems like I can't get the update to run at all now. So basically no BT folder, no white win 10 icon and attempt the force method does nothing.

Upgraded successfully but activation fails... and I was hoping to do a clean install today, which apparently I cannot do until I have successfully activated.

Anyone else in the same boat? Is it possible the activation servers are just slow or should I start looking into some alternatives?

Any Canadians got the message yet?

I did last night about 11:00 PM (MST) on my HP laptop running Windows 7. It took me a few times opening and closing Windows Update for it to appear. I started the update process last night and checked this morning and it was at the Windows 10 first time login screen, hopefully things work OK tonight when I try it out.

Hopefully you see it soon!

I've forced it on a computer with no icon or reserved copy. Empty the folder again, try the command prompt again. Make sure your windows 8/7 is completely up to date, and that you are running the prompt as an admin.

I keep getting the 80240020 error. I'm thinking 11gb total free space might not be enough to download and install the update? If so that would be disappointing. I reckon there's a lot of ssd users in a similar predicament.

Can anyone please refer me to the tweet post about DX12 where it shows how DX12 gets access to all GPU cores while DX11 couldn't? I need it. It was posted here in Neogaf in many threads many times some months ago. Thank you.

DX12 has improved CPU usage for GPU calls, however that only matters when games are built for DX12. Currently none are.

OK I will give it another go and see what happens.

Great. When I updated, I can't use my second monitor now. Anyone know how to fix this? I had it via HDMI by the GPU but Win 10 isn't detecting it.

The official FAQ page states 20gb minimum of free space required for 64bit and 32bit requires 16gb free.

Didn't seem like I needed to install those drivers, but I did grab and install W10 drivers from manufacturer's site.

Check out Power Options > Advanced Settings and make sure your Minimum Processor State is not at 100%. If it is, set it to 5%.

Thanks a lot! It was indeed set a 100%. I don't remember setting it that way, must have changed during the upgrade.

Interesting. Had to update my partners laptop first with a few updates that were published a few days ago and then restart Windows before it allowed me to start the Win 10 install.

Going from a 8.1 Pro (Bought Win 8 Pro ages ago and used that copy to install on the laptop after a Dell software overload) to Win 10 Pro, hopefully!

I can't seem to get the reserved icon for me. My windows 7 copy is legit, but I never got the "upgrade to windows 10" message at all. Is it too late for me to upgrade for free?

I upgraded, and went back to 8 after 30 minutes.

Spotify started crashing randomly, all of my Adobe software became very unstable and some games wouldn't load at all. VLC also started crashing a lot, even after an update.

It's crap.

Yeah, though press releases seem more nebulous on this area. So I'm kind of hoping if anyone here was successful in updating with less free space that he or she could let me know, or conversely whether everyone that doesn't have 16-20gbs of free space are also getting failed errors.

Oh shit, Windows 10 is up on Dreamspark. THANK GOD. It literally just went up, when I checked to get my 8.1 key they still had the technical preview, but they replaced it with the full version now :)

Edit: What's the difference between Windows 10 EDU and Windows 10 Multiple Editions? Anyone know?

Edit #2: I think it might just be called Multiple Editions because you get access to both 64 and 32 bit Windows. Previous one didn't use that naming scheme though. Odd.

Every key is for 32 and 64bit. So I'm wondering too what the difference between EDU and ME is. Maybe you can freely choose which one to install?

Check Device Manager.

Reboot.

Re-Check Device Manager.

May need to reboot again as after the first reboot it will actually install the proper driver.

Anyone know how to fix the Nvidia issues? I checked Windows Update and there's nothing to do and when I try to manually install the new drivers it shows up as "Failed". I can't game at all because everything is stuttering so badly.

Do you have any optional Windows Updates that aren't installed? I believe you need to install certain ones to get the "Upgrade to Windows 10" icon on your task bar.

I had 12GB left before the installation (64bit)

It installed just fine without any errors or problems

Restarting fixed the Nvidia failing issue for a lot of people.

Any big incompatibilities with Steam or Steam games yet?

A new OS not out of the box being compatible with everything? Obviously lazy programming. /s

Its not perfect. Both of my systems had issues and they are very minimal installs. I noticed more issues in terms of performance once i fresh installed, upgraded installs were cluggish in comparison.

per system basis then. runs blazing fast with me by doing upgrade. SSD

Updated last night. The windows snapping and multiple desktops are worth upgrading alone. Haven't launched any games yet.

I have a few updates, but every time I try to install them they keep failing. Right now I have 5 failed updates on my windows update tab, so there might be something wrong with my computer.

As long as your machine is up to date (install optional updates too), you can use the force method and get Windows 10, even without the icon or a reservation.

Thank you, I'll keep that in mind after I'm done trying to get all updates installed.

Upgraded (not clean installed) my Windows 7 to Windows 10 just fine. Zero issues so far, just about everything is where it should be other than some minor things like certain apps not being pinned to the start menu like I had previously.

Tried Xbox One streaming via the Xbox app, stream test says everything was good, but once I actually tried it, it was laggy and unplayable. Will try again another time.

Wow what lazy programmers

People you need to give it more than 30 minutes...also you need to make sure it is pulling new drivers correctly so everything is properly upgraded

You upgraded to Windows 10 but didn't have a previous version or the correct edition of Windows installed (error 0xC004F061)

If you see error 0xC004F061 when you try to activate Windows 10, it means one of the following:

•You're using a product key to upgrade to Windows 10 but no previous version of Windows was installed on your PC. To update, you need to have Windows 8 or Windows 7 already on your PC.

If you formatted or replaced your hard drive, you won't be able to use a product key to update to Windows 10. You'll need to install your previous version of Windows, then reinstall Windows 10.

getting this code. the bolded part seems like a huge hassle. have support calling me tomorrow, hopefully can be sorted over the phone

That definitely does not seem to be typical behavior. I have Spotify, VLC, Photoshop CS6, as well as a few games and so far everything is rock solid and stable.

Some folks are going to experience problems that are likely unique to their setup. That doesn't make Windows 10 "crap."

That's not what I meant. I mean the errors were crap, not the whole OS. I actualy liked the new layout.

But I must also admit that I'm very inpatient with these things... I'll try again later.

I saved a screenshot in Solitaire, but I don't see it showing up on my Xbox One activity feed. An achievement did, however. Should screenshots/video captures from Windows 10 games be appearing for my friends to see on Xbox One?

Thanks.

quick bump.

So if i want to install Windows 10 on another SSD, i have to install Windows 7 there first and then upgrade ? Or would upgrading my current Windows 7 installation be enough to activate Windows 10 on the PC and then i would be able to get 10 on whatever disk i want on the PC.

Anyone got information on how it works if you are swapping hard drives on your PC regarding activations ?

Check "DVR" it's under that weirdly. You want to check the broadcast section.

As it is, Dirt Rally is supposed to run on 10 but I'm getting like 1-5 FPS on booting it. :|

I can't wait for the update to become available for me. I noticed that something was downloaded to my PC yesterday, so I guess I won't have to wait long.

Most everything seems fine here. Only PITA now is waiting until Sep for Creative Labs to update their software. My USB headphones lack any punch and sound tinny without being able to adjust all the levels.

Any Xbox One streaming impressions?

hoping it works smoothly on my crap 2006 PC, over a powerline network adapter wired connection...
I'm not sure what the issue could be but it works like crap on my PC. We just got a new router to so realistically that shouldn't be the issue, but there was a huge controls delay and video delay from my monitor to the TV.
