Upgrade to Windows 10?

I have the update ready, but everything I've been reading today has made me skeptical, so I'm thinking about waiting it out. Besides the problematic stories here and something like Wifi sharing being enabled by default, which I find very sketchy protection wise, things like this concern me the most:

“If you open a file, we may collect information about the file, the application used to open the file, and how long it takes any use [of]it for purposes such as improving performance, or [if you]enter text, we may collect typed characters, we may collect typed characters and use them for purposes such as improving autocomplete and spell check features.”

I still haven't received the prompt to upgrade, I've been staring at that damn "Get Windows 10" icon in the notification area for like two months. If I was really antsy about upgrading I'd use on of the workarounds to force it but I think I'm still fine with holding off a week or three, if not longer.

You probably hit the corrupted download error. Force a check now in windows update, then update now, after it's done look in update history and you'll probably see a failure error. Refer to the OP for the fix, it's very easy

Think I'll wait at least a month before trying to install Windows 10. Good luck to everyone trying now and thanks for working out all the problems and bugs for me.

Pretty standard stuff. Wouldn't be surprised if all that is already in your Windows 7/8 agreement as well.

So I've upgraded to Windows 10 which is pretty sweet. But I'm running into a problem with grand theft auto V. When I log into rockstar social club it asks for my activation key again, entering it says (of course) that it's already in use. Weird.

So I did system restore.

It deleted everything and acted as if I had just installed windows 10.

There's no winning.

I should have expected stuff like this I guess

Ehh what's your issue? Last time I saw you in the thread you were all set up.
Experiencing no issues here and I transitionned nicely to Windows 10 only keeping user files as it wouldn't let me keep programs and apps due to languauge conflicts. In the end it worked out better cause the install was fresh, I just slapped the Nvidia drivers and a few utilities I need and was good to go.

Now if only Nvidia coud fix this high power usage while idle using 144hz in thier next drivers it would be golden.

Cortana is kinda useless though I gotta admit (at least she understands open Steam/Firefox) but Edge is lightning fast, feels so smooth compared to Firefox.

Installed Win10 and the only games that aren't working are Windows Minesweeper, Windows Mahjong, and Minecraft Windows 10 Edition lol.

All three crash as soon as the window opens.

Edit: I have a N version of Windows 10 and forgot to install the media pack.

If anyone else has a N version here's the download link.

Do I need to switch my DVI cable to my mobo in order to do this? Or will my video card still work with the drivers uninstalled? I'm assuming no.

No you do not need to switch your DVI hub on Win 7 or Win 8.1, the resolution won't be correct untill you reinstall the nvidia drivers. But this is not a big deal at all.

On Win 10. Who knows, you might even create a black hole or activate the secret second GPU on all XBOX Ones simultaneously, world wide ;)

just kidding, should work fine.

All three crash as soon as the window opens.

Because you now need a Xbox Live account to play them ;)

I don't know what made everything bad in the first place that made me want to restore. I reinstalled windows again and will be all set up again shortly.

I'm liking everything about windows 10. Aside from the forced update problems it's pretty damn good. Microsoft needs to stop sending out gpu updates pronto. Anyway enjoy.

Just go here and download the installer. It works 100% fine. It says it's just for making a USB drive or a disc but the installer immediately gives you the option to upgrade right then and there. I just did it and it worked perfectly.

Yeah, I've seen the failed updates since since Tuesday but I'm not super into jumping on W10 immediately so I'm cool with waiting a little longer. But I guess I'll see if I can get it started.

I´m using Windows 10 since the beginning of the WIN10 Insider program and I never had any bigger problems and I really thought this could be a working OS on the release day , so it´s kinda sad to read that it´s not working for some of you

I managed to upgrade from 7 to 10 last night. Including downloading time the entire process took just over 2.5 hours. I was expecting it to be quicker than that!

Haven't really played around with it much. Should i uninstall Windows Media Player? Is that pretty much defunct now?

Please remember everyone:

This upgrade, while nice, has it's negatives. Luckily they are easily remedied for the most part.

Take a look at your start menu and right click to uninstall all apps you do not want. This makes a noticeable impact on your network performance and CPU/memory performance. Also, unless absolutely mandatory, right click on the "live tile" apps and disable their "live tile" functionality. This helps keep anything unnecessary from running in the background.

Furthermore, remember to unpark your CPU cores. I'm sure some of you did that in the past, but the update will re-park them. I confirmed this earlier by performing an unpark before the upgrade and noticed it parked my cores after the upgrade. This will help significantly, especially in games.

To unpark cores, click to download this utility (no virus/spyware, it's legit and easy to use): Unpark CPU cores

EDIT:
Btw, before doing the above steps, I was sitting idle with a fluctuating 30-80% CPU usage. That was unacceptable (I'm currently running a Surface 3 at the moment). After doing all of the above I'm sitting comfy at 0-2% idle and I can run more internet tabs and programs like Visual Studio simultaneously without an issue.

Thanks. Just got into pc gaming and didn't realize that was an option. You are a Saint

You're welcome :D

Be warned though: Depending on what resolution you choose to downsample from it'll chew away at your resources mercilessly. Depending on your rig you'll have to do with 1440p for newer games (or not even that), but many games from ~2013 and just about any older game will run in 4K flawlessly even on mid-tier cards (GTX 770, for example) and get a huge boost in Image Quality.

Your gpu will work with drivers uninstalled.

I had the same issue as you. Go to windows update and check for updates a few times, reboot, try checking again. It fixed itself after that.

Is anyone having downsampling issues? My GPU is no longer an option in the Nvidia CP >>Adjust desktop size and position.

Looks like it's there for me:

Geez, some really scary stuff in this thread. Install went without a hitch for me I'm loving the OS so far, but a damn shame that not everyone had such a smooth experience.

Surely your CPU was active because it was busy doing updates?

I checked and it was well after updates (2 hours after I first signed into the new shiny OS).

The CPU on my particular device has an Atom processor. It's not meant for a ton of processes running in the background and is the compromise MS made to bring down the price of the Surface 3 (non-pro version). I got it for school and note taking, but I'm loving using it all the time for various purposes.

My results are exaggerated as a result, but I figured the information would help.

EDIT:
I don't remember the name of the process, but MS has a process that runs to constantly check for updates on apps and that helps feed the live tiles. It was basically bloat-ware for me at this point. It was hogging 40% of my poor CPU lol

So, I try to open Geforce Experience. The NVIDIA Installer opens, saying it failed. 2.5.12.11 is not installed.

I download the installer for it. Same thing.

I download driver 353.62 and try installing that. it tells me install failed again. Everything says not installed, except PhysX, which says a newer or same version is present. I'm running on a MSI 970 for reference.

I had the same issue with windows auto updater kinda messing up my nvidia drivers it seem (maybe the auto update nvidia driver was a bit bad or not ready). Anyway to fix the failed attempt at installing the newest driver you listed I used Display Driver Uninstaller to totally remove the nvidia drivers from my pc and just install that update after.

I got it working on the second attempt . The only thing I did was I uninstalled the nvidia graphics driver before upgrading . It went through without a hitch but interestingly did not install a graphics driver.

I downloaded the .63 beta driver from nvidia and all is working .

However , windows update is still trying to download an nvidia driver and keeps failing. And then re-trying . And failing!

Any ideas on how to stop this ?

ms has released a patch of sorts to bypass this and stop from happening. follow this guide

if by optical you mean integrated w/ a head phone jack, then ya

Did you check if the Realtek drivers were installed properly during the upgrade? Open device-manager and check if your sound chip is listed with a yellow symbol next to its name. If so go to realtek's website and download the drivers manually.

If it is listed correctly there's some other reason why you don't get sound.

Reading this thread I feel I must have got very luckily to have got Windows 10 installed on 3 machines with no problem!

No yellow problems, tells me VIA HD audio is installed. That is different then what is was with windows 7

Yeah I got it running on two Systems so far. It is running 'ok' in it's worst states so I won't start to complain. But there is one curiousity I'd like to know more about.

I tried to 'find/read' my new Win 10 Pro Keys on my systems after the upgrade with a tool like Magical Jelly Bean Key Finder (most trustworthy I was able to find).
And to my suprise the tool showed the exact same key for both of my systems.

Do you care to check if the same happend to your three Systems?

Just for Info: Both PCs were upgraded from Win 8.1 Pro to Win 10 Pro.

The terms in that first article are for the Technical Preview, which is understandable. I don't think the same clause is in the public release.
