Upgrade to Windows 10?

It's fine. The only thing I really miss it's the "swipe to go back" from metro IE. I'll adjust eventually.

Do not adjust! Make them add that back in for tablet users. :)

Its pretty good except for that. Loving this OS in general. Amazing redesign from 8.

I'm about to start the update and I have a few questions.
  1. The SSD Disk where I have my Windows 7 based has about 24 gb free. Is that enough?
  2. Is there any content on my PC that will NOT be spared from the update? (ex. the stuff I have on desktop for some reason)
  3. I have lots of games installed. Do I have to re-install them?
  4. The licence opens up saying to read "If I'm based in the US". Does that mean that I don't have to read it?
  5. If it ends up and Windows 10 suck, can I easilly return to my Windows 7? (without the need to find my serial codes, formating or reinstalling).

What's the story on nVidia drivers? Are they supposed to install autoamtically? I'm stuck on 1024x768, and it doesn't detect my second monitor either. Looks like ass. Am I supposed to run GeForce experience, or is this supposed to be automatic through Windows Update?

I fixed mine by manually downloading the drivers for Windows 8.1 64-bit and reinstalling over and over. Finally worked. The GeForce Experience was installed before but would never complete the install of the drivers.

1) Use the current address and password to login to account.microsoft.com

2) Click on "Your Info" at the top

3) Click on "Manage your sign-in email or phone number"

4) You can click "Add Email Alias" to add additional email addresses to use for signing in

Once you have verified the accounts, you can switch one of them to your primary.

Thanks, will try this when I get home.

Finally decided to install Windows 10. As soon as i did, i got the "something happened" with the windows creation tool. I read up on it, and changing my region locale to en-us worked for some reason.

Aha, I'll try that out tonight. I was running into this issue on my laptop. Desktop was fine.

Stay away from Windows 10.

Windows 10 Solitaire requires a subscription to remove ads

I suspect they're doing this as an experiment, but I imagine that most, if not all of the critical OS components are going to go the DLC route.

Fuck that. I'm just gonna go to Apple or start to really look into Linux if this will be the future of Windows.

Oh no Microsoft released a game with DLC whatever shall we do windows is doomed. DOOMED I SAY

Looks like it's there for me:

I posted about this maybe 2-3 months back in the screenshot thread. Had the same problem with only my display showing up there when I used to have both. Now after the upgrade I only have GPU instead. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

At least I am stuck with the right option this time, no weird scaling where letters and stuff look really weird.

Your usage of windows 10 hinges on an app which has no impact on usage of said operating system?

K.

Finally, My PC allowed me to upgrade after troubleshooting for like two days.

I've reset my Windows 8.1 installation, add my Media Center key, let my PC download Windows 10 and BAM!
there it is,
got the message to start upgrading to Windows 10 with no stupid error codes or "something happened" messages and no "Windows 10 has failed installing" message boxes.

So now I've reset my Windows 10 installation and created a Windows System Image backup.

Phew...

Calm down. Solitaire was not included with Windows 8 when it released and became a MS-published App on their app store. Like many app-store casual games, they have gone with a freemium model. With W10, they are just pre-loading the app. (Are they?) This is not a sign of some new scheme. If anything, W10 being a free upgrade is more suspicious than this.

Huh, just realized I last had Windows 8 Pro Student, so the upgrade lead me to Windows 10 Pro. Weird since I'm pretty sure I selected Win10 Home when I was installing

It'd be more suspicious if you weren't able to purchase it at all or the deal wasn't finite.

A reboot didn't work for me. I went to the NVIDIA site and downloaded the drivers for my 640GTX. Oddly, after the install, I wasn't prompted for a reboot, but I went ahead and rebooted anyway then both monitors came up.
My second monitor is an older dell 4:3 which I use for mame, and have edited mame.ini to use that instead of my primary widescreen, which wasn't happening. mame -verbose was seeing my secondary display as \.\\DISPLAY3, which was odd. Another reboot got that straightened out.
Besides edge not supporting java plugins, bsnes (pre-higan, which supports command line launch) and few other misc. windows games not working, the update was smooth. No complaints here.

A bit dramatic, no? lol

The problem isn't that it's Solitaire -- I don't give two shits about it. If they're going to move to a subscription base where I have to pay for every component I want, then I'm bailing. Especially so when they start introducing ads, which as you can see if you follow the link I posted, they will not be small, unobtrusive ads.

I don't mind paying the license fee at all. However, moving to this system is just ridiculous.

Right, I don't mind if they remove it and decide to offer it as an optional component you can download. But this freemium bs doesn't sit well with me.

Anyone who has used Edge for a while now? I'd like to know if it's a viable replacement for Chrome.

Not a replacement yet. However have been a long time since I use 2 browsers alternatively: chrome and firefox (mainly chrome). Now I believe I can retire firefox and keep edge and chrome (mainly edge it feels like). If there happens to be a great add-on support in edge along with some more updates I may even consider retire Chrome aswell.

So my experience was that Geforce Experience wouldn't allow me to install the windows 10 driver for some reason... so what I did was go to task manager, end all nvidia apps and processes, then go back to Geforce Experience and install the latest Win 10 driver. For some reason this works.

But Solitaire ISN'T a Windows component any more. It's a game from their Appstore now, just like Minesweeper and Mahjong.

Right, I don't mind if they remove it and decide to offer it as an optional component you can download. But this freemium bs doesn't sit well with me.

So if they had continued their Win8 policy and not pre-installed Solitaire you would be fine? You can right-click and uninstall it almost instantly.

It's stuck, I had that issue many, many times. Turn off Windows updates entirely, disconnect from the internet and then delete the entire hidden Windows BT folder and all files in that Download folder. After that reboot, turn automatic updates back on and then reconnect to the internet. Depending on how it got stuck you could probably skip some steps, but I had issues where if I just deleted the files and restarted the download it'd get stuck again, having a clean reboot with no files and no attempts from Windows to start the update again fixed it.
Well that didn't work. First, I can't get full ownership of the WindowsBT folder to be able to delete it. Keep getting access denied when trying to take ownership of it. UAC is fully disabled. I keep getting error code 80246010 when it attempts to download W10 and the status shows: Failed.

Downloaded a Windows Update fixer and it's downloading once again now but the size is smaller. It's only 2716MB whereas before it was like 5.5GB. We'll see how it goes. WindowsBT folder is also 140MB now instead of the 6.7GB it was prior.

Pretty sure I screwed it all up but I feel good about this update now...

Psst, you're still talking about Solitaire.

It's not a component, but that's not my point. It starts out with something like this, which is farily harmless. But it's pretty clear where they want to go with this.

Where was your outrage during Windows 8 and 8.1 when the same Solitaire program existed then?

Why make the assumptions because Windows 10 is free for 7 / 8 / 8.1 users it's also going to somehow use a subscription plan. Where is this even coming from?

...Clear?

Seriously, they did this two years ago. This is not new to Windows 10. Do you not think that when they did this "grand experiment" two years ago, that any such scheme would have surfaced in Windows 10?

I'm amazed at how you look at tiny ads in Solitaire that aren't even close to being front and center (seriously, open it up and see for yourself!) and then decide that the entire OS is doomed. The sky is truly falling.

No. This is just yet another free app on an app store that includes the option to pay to remove ads.

How do I initiate the upgrade? I'm in the UK if that matters.

Already registered via the taskbar thing that popped up months ago.

Curious, the files in Download certainly require permission to delete (and without a reboot will probably complain they are in use) but the BT folder had no kind of block for me. I definitely had to use a Windows Update Fixit tool as well, but that was because a prior update attempt crashed during install and caused some registry damage.

Using freemium models to pay for casual games? I'm afraid the boat has sailed on that one.

It's not even this.

Windows 8 Solitaire which is the SAME as Windows 10 Solitaire did not require one to pay to even play the game. OF course going by the other thread on this subject didn't prevent people pushing their faux outrage agenda.

Playing the basic Solitaire modes is the same as it's always been. It's only in the challenge modes is when adverts are shown.

This isn't even the appropriate thread for this anyways.

I hope a moderator cleans up this because this is supposed to be about Upgrading to Windows 10.

But the ads are only in the New challenge Mode added with win8, you can Play without ads when you Play without the New unnecessary challenges

So you Don't Need a subscribtion for playing a round of solitaire

Upgraded yesterday and have had zero problems so far. All in all it has been quite a painless experience for once.

It isn't though.

You can make the ads go away, but, as you may have guessed, it'll cost you, and not just once: The Microsoft Solitaire Collection Premium Edition is effectively a subscription service that goes for $1.50 a month, or $10 for a year. The Premium version of the game does away with ads, and also offers more coins for completing "Daily Challenges," and a boost when you play TriPeaks or Pyramid.

As PC World points out, this isn't exactly unprecedented. The Solitaire Premium Edition for Windows 8.1 is exactly the same, but it's offered as a separate app in the Microsoft Store, rather than being bundled with the OS. Minesweeper in Windows 10 is also ad-supported, although it remains a separate Microsoft Store download.

I mean, right now it's pretty tolerable, especially since it's, y'know, Solitaire. Don't get me wrong, I am really hoping that I'm just being one of those paranoid people that make a lot of fuzz over nothing. However, as it stands right now? I've loathed freemium systems like this and this kind of crap really turns me off from 10.

I hope a moderator cleans up this because this is supposed to be about Upgrading to Windows 10.

OP is specifically asking whether it's time to upgrade OS. I am simply stating that no, it isn't, and why that is.

I can confirm the error code in the Windows 10 Store where it hangs when acquiring licenses seems to be a server-side issue. The problem sorted itself out after trying a few times and leaving it in the background.

I uhh...intended of writing out the error code for the sake of this comment, but the problem fixed itself and you can't copy-paste the error text. Sorry about that.

To make the slippery slope argument, you have to provide proof that the slope is in fact slippery. What other convincing and substantive data points do we have to support this?

Not being a smartass, but genuinely asking. Maybe I missed something, but nothing else really grabbed my attention as some kind of proof that Windows will start having important existing chunks taken out of it and locked behind a paywall.

Do you use a phone or tablet? Because if this turns you off from 10 it should turn you off from iOS and Android as well. They have freemium apps just like solitaire as well. It's no different.

I tried getting Reader and a couple other apps updated many, many times last night and this morning and it never went through, hanging on acquiring license. Other apps would go through after a few tries but not those three. Were you able to update those as well?

Does anyone know if it is possible to keep Cortana from minimizing programs when you give her a task? For example, asking her to play a certain song or setting a reminder while playing a video game.

Run GeForce Experience and get the Windows 10 Driver. That's what fixed stuff for me. Can't speak for second monitors though.

how about we take those questions to PMs

this is a bigger response than I expected and I don't want to take the thread in a nasty direction.

OP is specifically asking whether it's time to upgrade OS. I am simply stating that no, it isn't, and why that is.

So an game with an option to remove ads that existed since OS version released nearly three years ago is your reason to avoid the current version of Windows 10 which still uses the same version of that game from that version of Windows of three years ago.

Yeah...okay, then.
