Upgrade to Windows 10?

Indeed, it's sad. I keep telling myself it's time to learn PowerShell. everyone who uses it says it's complete shit, and then after they use it for longer they say it's not so bad, and then after they use it for a while they say it's amazing. I know it sounds crazy, but I've heard this same sentiment expressed by hardcore Linux people.

But this is just the shell, not the console. The real killer was just how shitty the console has been all this time. Now that that's essentially fixed (there are useful keyboard editing shortcuts now if you click the o[ption under the one I highlighted), hopefully cmd can start to become useful. I'll have to play with it some more.

Powershell is god-tier. I use it everyday and have scripts to automate across different products from SQL Server to Nuget packages. It's probably the best thing MS has ever done imo.

Learn Powershell in a Month of Lunches is a great place to start if you want to dabble in it with minimal time investment initially. ISE is also nice because you get intellisense, which is handy versus just using the default terminal.

Also, use get-help (or man if that's your preference) religiously.

Sorry for the sale, but I just love Powershell.

Alright I'm just going to have to revert back to 8.1. Argh this stinks so bad. I was loving 10.

Quick question, though: am I still allowed to upgrade to Windows 10 again free in the future? Or did I just get this one opportunity to upgrade?

I would assume you can upgrade again later on since your Win10 license should be tied to your MS account AFAIK, but just in case, use that Microsoft media creation tool I linked to earlier to make a Win10 install disc before downgrading.

Uh. Downloaded the 64bit version and put on a disk, just says please insert the 64bit version of windows and install will restart.

I did download the 64bit one :/

Anyone had that?

Edit : Actually you know what, looking back through it every time you change an option it resets to 32bit when creating the ISO. So I must have changed an option the first time and not noticed it had changed back. Bleh.

So this is weird. I'm trying to reset the password on my microsoft account through the screen that you get when you click "Search the web and Windows" on the taskbar. It sends a code to my email, I enter it, and it asks me to type a new password. And as soon as I start typing it goes back to the other screen and cancels me out. So I can't reset my password.

Maybe I'm just dumb but is there a way now to assign a different desktop background to your multiple monitors? Or do I still have to use a 3rd party tool for that?

Had that happen to me, installed 32-bit by accident lol. Swore I set it to 64-bit

I will put up with the driver problems, compatibility issues, launch bugs, and all the other bullshit in the world for this right here.

Truly a dream come true.

This might actually make me do the same. I spend hour at time messing with command prompt and SSH Putty, would love to have a more modernized one.

What a mess so far. Easiest part was cloning my old SSD to the new one. Upgrading to Windows 10 first gave me the 'something happened' error so I got past that by changing my system language.

Made it all the way through and it bitched about my system partition and canceled the install. So I went in via suggested fix online and cleared out some language shit in there. Here's hoping it actually installs this time, though it seems it has to redownload everything all over again.

Should have just created some installation media instead.

Had a random problem with my display after installing Windows 10. I only had 3 resolution settings, only one monitor was detected, and none of my drivers would install correctly. So I rebooted to see if any updates would install and when it restarted it was completely fine lol.

Any Nvidia users having trouble finding the Nvidia Control Panel? I've got the latest drivers and G-Force experience, but when I right click on the desktop or start button, there's no way to get to the Nvidia Control Panel to make custom settings.

Win+S. Type nvidia. Click the first thing that comes up.

BTW, once you learn Win+S, you never have to use anything else again. You can use it to find anything on your entire computer in an instant. Think of it like googling your computer

Got 10 installed and I have to say, I'm impressed. Slick, snappy and no more tiles. I wish I could erase the memory of 8.1 from my mind, forever.

they will stay,

only issue i have had is two fold that happened tonight

first,,, the os recognized i have a naga mouse - a lefty naga mouse...and switched my left click/right click

second i hard locked and crashed my wow game, i couldn't close the window or use the mouse and ultimately had to reboot the computer.

third, this is just a general "looks" thing, i hate the settings window, its just too freaking bland.

fourth, microsoft edge brower, until i can move the hub, not using it.
i LIKE the idea of the hub, i DISLIKE WITH A PASSION where it is in the window, it is on the wrong side of the window, i NEED to be able to switch sides and have it on the left side, where it would remain open to favorites 100% of the time, and right now, i have no clue how to move it(i've looked, nothing comes up about being able to switch sides/be movable

Rolled back my video adapter driver to a previous version as a last resort before I reverted back to 8.1 (even though I thought I was on the previous one anyway before I updated the driver a few hours ago)...and my games run perfectly! Woohoo! I'm so glad.

Anyone else with sound issues ? I can only hear sound from the left speaker of my headphones... A real deal breaker for me.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for the quick reply. Actually, I just noticed that Windows is showing a have a GTX 760 vs 760 Ti. In any case, after searching they should both be the same driver 353.62. Maybe that's what's wrong.

Are you still able to get to the Nvidia Control Panel from right clicking on the desktop?

Edit - Whoops. I guess I don't have the 760 Ti. Either way, I still can't get to the NCP.

Yes, it shows it for me. Open up GeForce Experience and try re-installing the driver I guess?

you don't need win+s, windows key alone will bring you to search

Ahh that must be new to Win 10. I'm accustomed to 8.1 where there's no search box on the metro start menu. In any case, I guess now Win+S opens Cortana or something? I guess for me it doesn't make a difference though.

In 8.1 you could also just start typing in Metro Start and the search bar would appear by itself. Same thing in Windows 10.

In windows 8 it works the same way... you can just hit windows key and start typing :)

if you do win+s it shows the 'popular now' page or whatever and if you just hit windows key it shows the start menu, but both leave focus in the search box (even if you have the search box hidden)

For anyone who has not got the update working, I used step 2 without deleting anything and then went to update from control panel and it worked.

Can hover over any window and scroll regardless of window order. Amazing. Anybody have a problem with clicking "Sign-in options" in account settings? When I click it, it just turns grey.

Mine doesn't feel sluggish. My boot time is slightly faster than it was with 7.

I'm using an SSD though. But my Windows 7 install was 3 years old and I had a ton of programs installed.

Same situation for me. SSD /Win 7 at least 4 years old and full of all kinds of programs. Performance increased in Win 10 for me. Well except for Chrome. Does Chrome seem particularly sluggish to anyone else?

Quick q.

We have a laptop setup next to the TV as a media box. We enjoying using it across HDMI onto the TV and view a range of file formats using VLC.

Does Windows 10 have any changes that may negatively effect our laptop media box?

If I'm going to be using my Windows desktop as a pure gaming device and really nothing else, would there be any advantage to using my Microsoft account as my main account, or should I just roll with a local one?

I don't have any other Microsoft products it would sync with (phone or laptop)

Ugh... Tried re-installing the Realtek drivers, and they keep uninstalling / resinstalling after every reboot.

Am I the only one with this problem ?

Hello from Windows 10 :)

I'm testing out some more games now.

Star Wars Battlefront 2 still works, but you still need to enable the Sound Mixer though or it will crash.

Once upgrading from legit Win7/8/8.1 to 10, is that licence stored on your MS account? So, for example, if I get a new laptop would I be able to do a clean install just using my login details?

So I upgraded using the tool. I heard that if I clean install in the future I won't need a key because Microsoft will detect that I'm an upgraded user. Is this true?

edit: Did some googling and found this answer from Microsoft forum moderator: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...-upgrade/578d0b7f-57e4-4893-b9d1-6cfac0d6290a

Q: After doing a free upgrade to Windows 10, how do I clean install Windows 10 subsequently?

You will be able to skip entering the product key during Windows 10 Setup. Windows 10 will activate online automatically on such devices. The skip option is only available when booting from media and launching setup

Cant seem to get Bluetooth working with DS3 scp driver. Went from win 7 to 10 and I could unplug the ds3 and it would seamlessly switch to wireless. Now it just does 4 blinking lights then nothing.
Tried uninstalling then reinstalling, running admin, turning off UAC but nothing works.

How can I stop Windows from turning on my PC at 2:30 in the night? (except shutting off the power supply)
I sleep in the same room as my PC is and this happened both nights since I have Windows 10 installed and I wake me up when I hear it.
I use the energy save mode instead of shutting the system down completely and don't want to change that.
