Upgrade to Windows 10?

Add me to the list of people who just got their W7 gaming setup working perfectly only to have W10 screw everything up.

It's been a headache for sure. But I've picked up a few tips and tricks while troubleshooting driver issues.

What error message are you getting?
THREAD STUCK IN DEVICE DRIVER?
Which was (or is) your problem?
And no error at all. It just froze suddenly and there was a buzz from the speakers the first and second time (not the rest). Right now it seems to be working, but I have barely anything installed…
I can only ask myself why I did upgrade my computer when everything was working smoothly.

Mostly video card errors. I own a laptop with a 7970m/Intel 4000 combo, and the driver situation is a mess right now. I've used Driver Verifier whenever things become too unstable. My device manger is picking a bunch of "unknown devices", some are fixable, the others just aren't compatible. Outside of video card driver issues, the fact that Radeonpro is all but useless now really burns. My card doesn't have (FRTC) support yet, so framerate and vsync are a problem again all of sudden. W10 has a lot of cool features (shutting down seems to be a better option than hibernate now) It feels snappier. I like it, but lot's of work to be done.

Yep, that is also my sentiment. W10 gave me really good vibes, but with this whole situation I have to go through I cannot recommend to install it if things are working fine on your current version. I will use Driver Verifier once I have everything I need installed, but I am not in the mood of suffering more errors to be honest. I need my dosis of The Witcher 3. :(

My computer is a R9 280x/FX 8350. I was specially worried about the temperatures but they seem to be fine, so I do not know what can be the cause of this mess.

I'd better wait and buy a new PC with Windows 10 pre-installed rather than upgrade

You could just do a fresh install after you upgrade, it would be same as buying a new PC with W10 installed.

Is it common that notebooks get much hotter after the update?

Also, when the screen turns itself off due to inactivity, there seem to be issues with the AMD drivers. Mentions they didn't respond and have been reinstalled or something like that.

Didn't actually measure my temp, but I didn't notice any kind of difference. Also battery life etc. seems to be the same. But I am not running an AMD APU/CPU/GPU.

My PC had some weird logonui.exe failure after upgrading from Windows 7, which then led to some boot failure, thus rendering my PC completely useless. I'm a bit nervous. While I was able to recover all data, I don't want to reinstall Windows every few days now.

On Windows 7 I had always issues with my energy settings when the PC switched between the two graphic cards. That's apparently being controlled by the AMD control center now.

Got the CPU issue (where it randomly goes to 90-100% for long periods of time) and after installing a few performance-fixing apps and taking some advice disabling a number of apps hidden in the background (thank you guys for sharing that :D!), I think things got better.

I do NOT want my laptops CPU to be fried due to Windows 10 bugging out, so thank you guys so much for the heads up on how to fix that issue :).

In case that somebody is interested, my issue was related to my SSD where the OS was installed.
The thing is that I do not know still what really happened. To be honest, I think there is something wrong with disk management because in windows 7 setup, it appeared only my two HDDs while in Windows 10 setup appeared those two plus a third one (which seemed to be my 1TB HDD but duplicated).
I cleaned them, format and such (it took me awhile!) so te culprit here is Windows 10 IMO. I decided then to restore Windows 7 and I am going to stay like this at least until next year. It is a pity, but I did have a bad time. :(

Word of warning!

I tried four times to ugprade my PC from Windows 8.1 Pro to Windows 10 Pro.

I had all Windows updates installed, everything was up to date and perfect going into the upgrade.

I had reserved my upgrade last week, but decided I couldn't wait.

So I did each of these three methods, with the exact same result:

1) Media Creation Tool -> Upgrade to Windows 10.
Failed at 60% during the "installing devices and features" phase. Error upon reboot (and rollback to windows 8.1) was "Error during FIRST_BOOT during DATA_MIGRATION phase".

2) Registry edit to allow for update to occur via windows update window.
Failed at 62%, same spot, same error on rollback.

3) Downloaded Windows 10 x64 ISO file, mounted, upgrade to windows 10.
Failed at 59%, same spot, same error on rollback.

Before trying the third option (ISO), I uninstalled my NVIDIA drivers and reinstalled the latest, as well as disconnected EVERY USB device save for my mouse and keyboard, all secondary SATA hard drives, and it still failed.

I ended up doing a clean install, as much as I didn't really want to.. but it worked.

but if you're having the same issues via your upgrade, I wasn't able to figure out how to successfully upgrade my machine without a full install.

I am on a 128GB SSD, I don't know if that contributed to the issues or not, but I don't see why it would.

If you did a clean install without upgrading, how did you activate Windows 10?

If I use the disc I created with the media create tool. Can I upgrade other computers with that disc or will it perform a clean install?

Is there any way to check page encryption/certificates on Edge? A few sites on Firefox just show the exclamation mark in the triangle box for me now saying this website does not supply identity information.

I would assume it would. Just try running it in Windows and see if you get the upgrade option.

That is what worries me. It skipped over the what to keep options and didn't ask me to upgrade. I can still cancel it though. It is a older machine with update from 2013. I didn't want to update that machine just to put Windows 10 on it. If it helps I ran the disc within Windows 7 with SP1.

Edit: Screw it I'm gonna guinea pig a laptop instead of my customers PC. Too risky. Not in the mood to do data recovery. =P

After a lot of problems over the years with W8, my 10 install worked first time no problems and is getting on great, actually fixed some problems with the media keys on my Steelseries Apex and has yet to BSOD, when W8 would do it a few times a week. This never happens to me!!!

So my story is this.

I've been dual booting Windows 7 Home Premium and Elementary OS for about 30 days.

Well, during that entire time I had to suffer through some boot/system start up bs that would not let Elementary OS release my USB ports...unless I literally completely powered down the system (hold the power button down for 15 seconds or pull the power cord) . If I used EOS for 20 minutes (like I just did)...no mouse or keyboard on the Windows OS unless I pretty much killed the system.

I was just in Elementary OS for about 20 minutes...just selected reboot from the EOS desktop...

...glitch is gone. I was immediately able to type in my password to get to the Win10 desktop. I was shocked.

Going to test it out again, but for that reason alone upgrading to Win 10 was worth it.

Oh...Pinball Fx seems like it's running better with just my Intel 4600 cpu driving it. No slowdown at all.

You can use the ISO on other computers no problem. I used a USB stick on my laptop created from my desktop, no problems. It just copies over the files to the PC your upgrading basically.

If you did it on an un updated PC it may not have had an option to upgrade and might have skipped over that, but it should have said something.

I had a similar issue. My Windows 10 upgrade has finished, I could use the computer OK but when I install a new software... the Windows 10 on the next boot simply rolled back to Windows 7.
Then I´ve upgraded to Win10 again... I used the computer OK... installed a new software and... rolled back to Windows 7 again.
So I gave up. :P

I think he meant he didn't select the save my files/apps setting before the installation begins. Im still running into problems during my upgrade as well, uninstalled all running apps at startup, drivers etc and I still fail at 32%/6% at the features and drivers part. From what i've read of ppl stuck at that same phase they did not save their files/apps before the installation and it worked. I haven't bothered to try that because I don't really want 10 now lol

Yup. Weird as fu... It's fixed.

Now I'm hoping my 970 fixes my Freespace 2 Open issue. If it does, this upgrade gets an A- in my book. Even without there being any DX 12 games on my system.

Think I need to revert back to 8.1 which was crazy stable, just a bit too buggy for me at the moment, will check back in a couple of months or after that August update.

I upgraded my laptop from 8.1 to 10 and then decided to do a clean install form within window 10. When my laptop rebooted. I get an error after it boots up saying that Windows 10 ran into a problem wit the error being inaccessible_boot_device. And Windows restarts the laptop, which boots into the same problem and just continuously loops. Anything I can do?

I fixed this, I simply had to use the Media Creation Tool on a USB and create a Windows 10 Installation. Installed from USB and it worked fine.

I just booted up Hearthstone for the first time after upgrading and I get greeted with the option to record in-game? What's the catch? Is there a catch? There's gotta be a catch.

Slight performance drop while recording, much like what you get with Shadowplay.

I tried the upgrade but there was some corrupted windows files that was preventing me from opening settings and other windows stuff, though installing software was fine.
So I downloaded the iso and put it on a usb stick and installed. I skipped all of the "activate windows with key" and just installed it. Now when I go to activate windows, it says it is activated O_o

anyone know what is going on with that? Just want to know if I am safe or is it in a sort of 30-day demo mode. Hate to not be able to back up my files if it is time bombed.
also anyone having issues with certain apps not closing? they just seem to reappear in the taskbar on my second window after closing them. The apps are calculator, xbox app, settings, movie player and I think that is all.

The key in the Registry isn't worth that much anymore. The one unique to you is tied to your account. As soon as it connected, it could get it and activate.

surprisingly enough windows 10 fixed some issues i had with my pc on 8 and 8.1
after installing the nvidia drivers some stuttering issues i had with videos is gone so thats a pleasant surprise

My Dualshock 3 isn't working anymore. I managed to get it working for a minute by forcing SCPdriver to install, but after a while my PC crashed and since then it's not taking. Anyone?

this upgrade was completely fucked for me

i5 4690k, 970, gigabyte z97x gaming-5

install went super smooth then hard locked during "setting up apps, this will only take a moment". power button didnt even work. took 3 more reboots to get to a desktop and the start menu didnt work, and i had no graphics driver so there was crazy overscan

download nvidia driver which fixed that and had to run a powershell command to fix the start menu, not bad i thought! go to try starting a game and the highest res available is 720p in anything.

restart computer and failed about 3 times. getting to the desktop, the mouse would work for about 15 seconds then i could move the cursor but not click on anything. tried a different mouse in case of bluetooth issues but old school wired usb mouse had same problem

eventually rolled back to windows 7. will delete all win 10 stuff and try again in the future

Just one question guys, I already updated my Windows 7 Ultimate (retail version) to Windows 10 Pro and everything it's ok, it was activated, so my question is, if I want to make a clean install, do I need to log in into my MS account or I can just make a clean install and Windows 10 will be activated automatically without installing Windows 7 and upgrading again?

Thank you in advance!

Hi can you please post what cpu tweaks you applied and apps you disabled?
Thanks

According to my experience, I was able to clean install (from iso), skipped both prompts to type in a serial number, logged in with my Microsoft Account and Windows 10 Pro automatically activated for me.

I did do an upgrade first from 8.1 Pro to 10 Pro, then I performed the clean install (I really despise upgrades).

Things had been going far too smoothly for it to last.

I ran MalwareBytes yesterday afternoon which picked up on a potential risk in the WOW64 folder. To cut a long story short it wasn't anything dodgy but I had been advised by MalwareBytes support to run some FRST program with an associated fixlist.txt file. I think it does something to the registry. This completely ballsed up my PC; Windows would restart, try and log into an account, fail, restart. This occurred over-and-over.

I had to run a system restore using USB recovery. This has seemingly introduced login problems.

  • I have 3 non-passworded Windows accounts
  • If I sign out of an account it will *now* automatically sign it back in again
  • I have to put password protection on the accounts to stop this happening so that when I do sign out it returns to the lock screen / user login screen

Prior to the system restore we were able to sign out of a non-protected account and return to the lock screen / login screen.

I have asked on the MS site with no current answer. I was just wondering what happens on others' systems.

I think I'm done with Windows and going to switch to Linux for private use. The new level of monitoring and data gathering is something I don't want to tolerate.

Okay, ever since I've upgraded to Windows 10, whenever I boot up my laptop for the first time every day, it does a hard shut down after a few minutes, then starts itself back up, and then it's fine for the rest of the day. Anyone else getting something like that, it's really weird.

I think it's installing new drivers and what not.
Sounds suspscious
IIRC, Windows 10 is reading keys stored in the BIOS, so it's not that suspicious.

I had to go to Advanced Startup and select the option number 7 (something about enabling unknown drivers to be installed) and then MotionInJoy was able to install de DS3 driver and I tested it out on PCSX2. Working great now.

Just follow this steps: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5z9S5CthLU

Great. Went to log into my work laptop with windows 10 on it, enter password, then it immediately says signing out, and puts me back on the login screen.

So against my better judgment I'm installing w10. What boxes do I have to untick to prevent monitoring/advertising shit on my PC before I get to that point?
