Upgrade to Windows 10?

Ack, anyone know how to fix the text? I was messing around with themes/cleartype and everything looks blurry/antialiased now. I don't know how to revert back to the way it looked before.

I've turned cleartype off, but everything still has that antialiased look, which I absolutely hate.

I just ordered a new SSD. My current SSD still has 8.1 Pro on it, because I haven't been prompted to upgrade to 10 yet.

What's the best way to get Win 10 to install to my new SSD? Do I need to fresh install 8.1 onto it, and then upgrade? Is it still possible to reserve the free Win 10 upgrade?

Install 8.1 on the new drive, then download the Media Creation Tool from MS and see if it gives you the "upgrade this PC" option. After you've done that you can make a USB installation stick or DVD and perform a clean install if you want.

gave the install a shot again today and it went through without a hitch

still getting the max res of 720p in ryse though. anyone else having this issue? gpu drivers are successfully installed (entire nvidia experience) and all other games ive tried are working as normal

So against my better judgment I'm installing w10. What boxes do I have to untick to prevent monitoring/advertising shit on my PC before I get to that point?

I think I'm done with Windows and going to switch to Linux for private use. The new level of monitoring and data gathering is something I don't want to tolerate.

It's definitely concerning. After 20+ years of DOS/Windows and zero experience with other operating systems, I've had the same thoughts.

Is there a way to stop it from auto logging in on whoever was logged in before shutdown? It's super annoying for the family because the the person using the computer next is almost always different than the one before.

Is there a way to get it to always show the account select screen without having to put a password on every account?

Enjoy trawling the web for terminal commands to perform things that should be available from the desktop and using software designed by engineers for engineers. I've had to use Linux desktops enough at work to say that they are awkward and buggy at best. Linux is great for servers and embedded systems but as a full blown desktop system no matter the window manager it just seems to be halfbaked.

Overall as a user experience OSX is still the one to beat but Windows has far superior gaming performance and of course catalog of games.

I think that image doing the rounds that collects lots of Win 10 privacy things out of context has a lot of stuff that is no different from what Apple or Google are doing. So if you use either company's operating system on your phone you most likely agreed to much of the same things Win10 does. But like every Windows version to date, it comes with poor defaults for some settings, in this case the privacy ones. MS has also been way too vague about what is being collected and how it's used.

That said, I'm installing Win10 soon.

I have 2 PCs and a laptop. The laptop was prompted to update to W10 on day 1. My 2 other PCs (one of which is my primary machine) still show that they aren't ready.

I know there is a work around but just curious as to why after nearly a week there are PCs that aren't getting the automated update notification. Is this normal for a lot of people?

Updated from 8.1 Pro to 10 on my Surface Pro 2. Seemed to have been flawless at first but I ran into a few problems that make me want to do a clean install:
1) My user directories are restricted so that programs cannot save files there (eg. Excel can't save to Documents but I can save elsewhere and then copy paste there).
2) When I put the tablet to sleep, it ALWAYS wakes up automatically after 10-60 seconds.
3) When I shutdown/restart, there's an error that pops up for LogonUI.exe.

Gonna clean install. Windows 10 itself seems pretty sweet so far, however.

EDIT: System reset which erases everything and reinstalls Windows took about 40 minutes and seems to have completely fixed all issues. I recommend that everyone doing the upgrade be prepared to do a system reset.

Did it prompt you to type a serial key?
Do you have an ms account or local?
Did it erase the whole partition/drive or just the windows specific folders?

If I've done a fresh install of win 8.1 (+drivers but no updates) and upgrade to win 10 is there any benefit to then doing a clean install?

(assuming I delete windows.old)

I ask because upgrading from my prev (and long running) win 8.1 resulted in all sorts of broken shit ): and a clean install said my cd key wasnt valid :|

Upgrading from Win7 didn't go quite smoothly for me. I tried several times before figuring out I had to disconnect all my other hard drives for the install to complete. I think it didn't like my Hackintosh SSD for some reason (why I have no idea, it's a completely separate drive from the one where Win7 is installed).

So if any of you get a 0x20009 SAFE_OS phase error and rollback then try disconnecting any additional drives you have.

After the upgrade went thru it does work fine. I'm still considering doing a clean install just to get it properly clean. It would be nice to know how the upgrade process actually works since your old Windows version is still preserved in windows.old folder.

Keep getting issues like "problem with recording device" and "problem with playback device" when trying to use Skype on Windows 10. Worked fine on Windows 7.

Word of warning!

1) Media Creation Tool -> Upgrade to Windows 10.
Failed at 60% during the "installing devices and features" phase. Error upon reboot (and rollback to windows 8.1) was "Error during FIRST_BOOT during DATA_MIGRATION phase".

Too late now but I was getting similar issues. Tried what you done with Nvidia drivers, etc and nothing. Ended up following this and it worked. So anyone else having this issue might be worth trying.

  • Disable (preferrably uninstall) your Antivirus utility before attempting the upgrade.
  • Disable General USB Devices (example - Smart Card Reader).
  • Do a clean boot and try again.
  • If you are upgrading using the .ISO file, disconnect from the Internet during setup, if you are connected by LAN (Ethernet) or Wi-Fi, disable both and attempt setup again.
  • If you are updating through Windows Update, when the download reaches 100% disconnect from the Internet LAN (Ethernet) or Wi-Fi and proceed with the installation.
  • If that does not work, try using the .ISO file to upgrade if possible.
  • If you are connected to a domain, switch to a local account
  • If you have any external devices attached to the machine, disconnect them (example, USB keys, external hard disk, printers, non-essential devices).

Did the manual upgrade last week and it´s pretty good so far. My games are running as smooth as in 8.1 with a few being even better than before.

I would prefer a clean install, but for now that´ll do.

I've upgraded my old Asus N61jv laptop and the built-in webcam doesn't work anymore. Asus "recommends windows 10" but doesn't release appropriate drivers. Thanks, Asus.

Is anyone here with NV having trouble running HDMI 2.0 4K screens on the desktop (60hz)?

In game I have no performance problems, but in 2d desktop the mouse skips, things load visually slowly,etc...

Interestingly enough I notice that after leaving a game (power is presumably still running at full to all parts), that the mouse and desktop performs well. THen NOTICABLY worse after a few seconds.

There is also a ticking sound coming from my power supply with mouse movements. Crazyyyy.

This did not happen on Windows 7 through HDMI 2.0 Driving 60hz on the desktop.

I've just passed the point where I could count the issues I've had with Windows 10 since installing it a week ago on one hand.

Is nobody having issues creating custom resolutions for downsampling in windows 10? I could do fine in 8.1 but whenever I create one it doesnt save in the custom resolutions section. The screen pops up when you create one saying do you want to save but when you click save nothing happens. Cant just be me surely???

I'm running at 4K60 and I've noticed that on boot, my mouse skips around on the login screen. Not a big deal for me though, as it fixes itself as soon as I log in, and I have no other issues.

I still don't have the notification that I am ready to upgrade, and I don't want to force it because I assume there's a good reason Microsoft isn't wanting me to upgrade yet (i.e. driver/hardware incompatibility).

Could it be my processor? It's a desktop from 2007 with Intel Core2 processor Q6600(2.4Ghz 1066FSB) w/QuadCore Tech.

I read that any processor over 1Ghz should work, but I don't know what else could be preventing my upgrade.

Personally run into a few issues but nothing incredibly detrimental.

1. Backgrounds: There doesn't seem to be any option to pick and choose different pictures for your slideshow you just have to choose an entire folder.
a. Shuffle is no longer an option on slideshows I found a cmd command you can run to bring up an older version of the "customize" window with the option to enable shuffle though so that's a good thing.

2. Layout is taking some getting used to much preferred Windows 8.1 from a functionality standpoint but I'll relearn. The actual look of it I love it's very sleek and modern.

That's really about it. I haven't run into any major issues aside from that. I did have to re-install my graphics driver though (after a complete uninstall) in order to get some stuff working right.

Microsoft is doing a staggered rollout in order to 1. Give time to fix any major bugs that could potentially pop up and 2. Minimize strain on their servers.

Mine have only been GPU related so far (drivers not installing, screen corruption, etc...). But my most recent one comes up when I switch over to my TV instead of my monitor... Hrmmmmm.

Almost as if the screen is not using my GPU properly or something. I will try forcing 3d clocks on desktop etc.... among other things.

I asked this in the thread about the upcoming Xbox One controller chatpad, but it seems to have gotten buried.

In Windows 10, after just powering on the PC, can you log in and navigate the UI to start up a game solely by using an Xbox One controller?

That coupled with the chatpad would be huge for couch gaming.

Sort of, you can set Steam to open in Big Picture mode at startup and you wouldn't even need to use a keyboard or mouse then. But as far as using the Xbox app, I'm not sure.

What about for logging on at startup? I know you can set a passcode, but I don't know at what point the chatpad would be recognized and useable.

Haven't done it in W10, but I bought my Surface Pro 2 used and did the same reset to refresh it and it didn't ask for anything afair.

I get this for any resolution I try and make

I was able to make just about any resolution I wanted to at any refresh rate on Windows 8.1.

it's a driver issue, roll back to 353.30, make ur custom resolutions and save them, then update to the latest driver, it will keep the resolutions, they will work, but u wont be able to add new ones after you update.
i am also having problems with gedosato, the resolutions are detected ingame, but some games gives u the option to only change resolution through launcher, and it just doesn't work, resolutions wont appear on launcher, but ingame they will.

Recently upgraded to windows 10 from 8.1, very few problems, I've got it on my laptop as I was an insider but I've finally upgraded my main desktop.

Firstly, Never received the notification as such, I just kept clicking on the 'Get Windows 10' app to see if it would let me but it only ever gave the option of, 'Okay, notify me when ready' except! for yesterday when it gave me the option of 'Upgrade anyway (not recommended), I accidentally closed the app before clicking on the upgrade button and when I went to reopen the app, the upgrade button disappeared!

So I opened up Windows desktop update and there it was, asking me if I wanted to start the installation of Windows 10.

The whole installation process took just over an hour, I performed the upgrade while I was watching the MS Gamescom conference. Immediately noticed when it had finished that the display drivers weren't installed, running windows update found the drivers but failed on them, though after a restart the display drivers had actually been installed.

I went and decided to reset my system, got a lot of junk on it and that took about half hour, all in all a fairly painless process.

Anyone else not having the computer properly sleep monitors when idle? My power settings are correct but they just stay on, like W10 detects 'activity' differently than 8 did.

They really need to release dedicated XBox One drivers fro Windows 10 (the released drivers are basically 360 drivers) which will enable trigger impulse on PC. That feature alone made me buy the controller for PC, yet it doesn't work on it. I tweeted Major Nelson a long time ago about it and still no response.

I can't install it. I download the OS and it then goes to install it but when it restarts it begins to load and asks for a language. I pick US and all of a sudden it asks to either be reset or restore back to a previous version. I give up..

Do you have bitlocker on? Just wondering because I had a problem with that which also kept bringing me to that recovery boot menu

What error does it give you when it gets back into windows?

Windows 10 silently uses your bandwidth to send updates to others

WTH? Is this the payback of being free? A P2P bottleneck ? My internet providers already split my connection with otehr users because they can't provide enough brandwidth for every user and now we get this. Thank you.

Disable it or if you have multiple home devices only activate it for your network. It's a pretty neat feature for those without datacaps as we are helping others to get important updates faster.

There is far worse stuff included with W10 btw.

Still have that stupid "Thank You for Reserving" message. I read about manually forcing it, but as the posts above show, it can cause issues.

Still nothing. Office PC has apparently downloaded all files but update not triggering.
Home PC hasn't even shown me the icon to reserve.
Neither has wife's tablet (Asus t100)

Ah well.
