Upgrade to Windows 10?

So I'd like to upgrade too. I guess it's pretty safe by now right? Anyway, I have a NVIDIA GPU and, concerning drivers, what would be best? First install the new drivers on W7 and then install W10? Or first install W10 and then get the new drivers?

I fresh installed 10 then downloaded Geforce Experience and it automatically grabbed the new Win10 drivers. Everything is flawless.

Should I upgrade straight to Windows 10 from my Windows 7 Home license? Or upgrade my windows 7 Home to Windows 8.1 Pro then to Windows 10? Question is can you upgrade from an upgrade and will it be Windows 10 Pro?

Yes to both. Upgrade to Win 8.1 Pro first and you will then get Win10 Pro when you upgrade.

I have a new problem with my apps: when I hit the start button on my desktop, the app bar opens on the top left for a split second and then vanishes. When I click it again, it opens like normal, but none of the apps will work. Some shut off immediately (like the Xbox app) and others say it can't connect to the internet (Twitter, Facebook). The Cortana bar (ask me anything) will also not work.

Please help me. I've tried Googling for a solution but nothing works.

Updated my main rig last night. Flawless. Latest AMD drivers installed fine. Videos and video games all seem to work the same. Kinda just feels like a service pack with UI goodies at this point. Start8 I had still works as is.

Can't complain, will do my other pcs now.

Is there a way to remove buttons from the Action Center? Like I and I'm sure most desktop/non-touch screen laptop users don't care about "tablet mode", any way we can remove or at least hide it?

Maybe I should ask this in the support topic...

I don't think you can remove any, but you can collapse it down to just 4 buttons and pick the 4 you care about.

Settings -> System -> Notifications & actions -> Choose your quick actions.

Then go to the notification center and click "Collapse".

'System' is eating up way too much memory on Windows 10, on both my desktop and laptop. My laptop is literally reporting 1.3GB of memory being used up. Apparently that can happen due to faulty drivers, malware and runtime broker, but none of those seem to be the case - I've done a malware scan, used poolmon to check memory (the memory use doesn't properly add up), and disabled runtime broker. Gah.

Ever since updating to Windows 10, I no longer have the option to change sound output. It only shows my display's HDMI and nothing else.

Before updating I had several other sound output (playback device) options. Specifically, my sound card that's connected to my receiver.

Any ideas?

I'm experiencing a similar issue with some applications. That is, memory leaking without it being possible to attribute it to any process. I've had 10 GB in use when all processes summed up only use 1.5 GB.

It's very annoying, and the only way I found to fix it is by a reboot.

IMHO, it can only be a bug in either the OS or a driver -- nothing else should be able to acquire memory without it being associated with a process.

Has anyone seen calc.exe starting by itself randomly ?

It is weird, it starts, does not appear on task bar and the window is not visible...but I can see it on second display fusioned taskbar so I see it started. Seen some reddit posts about this issue, but no solution or explanation.

Well, there is a tag in poolmon that is exponentially larger than everything else, which is 'CM31', but that's apparently a Windows thing, and command line isn't giving me results when I try to search for the specific tag.

Would you say overall that it's worth updating to win 10 as a main OS? Because that makes it sound like it needs more time in the oven.

I had a similar issue and found a thread on reddit blaming Killer LAN drivers for the memory consumption issues. Try latest Killer driver if you've got that hardware. Just a possibility...

Unless you really need to or want to do it right now, it's most certainly smarter to wait a few months.

I found that as well, but I have a bog-standard Intel NIC.

Still not sure if I should upgrade to W10 on my crappy PC with W7... It's very crappy but according to the pop-up window that appears on the desktop to upgrade, my PC is compatible with W10 anyways.

3 core amd processor, 4 gb of ram 500 hardrive... No GPU because the one I had literally burned.

Do you guys think W10 will run slow on a PC with those specs?

Just upgraded mine. I only use my PC as a media server. Now I can't delete folders and it won't read any of my external drives. Great. I'll be rolling it back

Should be fine. Biggest issue might be with the drivers for the integrated GPU (you may have to find/install them manually).

That's odd. All my drivers, and programs work fine. In fact, if it wasn't for the theme change, I wouldn't have even known I was running W10 instead of 7. Give it a longer shot, look up issues or ask here, upgrade drivers from the official sites and download all Windows updates. Everything should be fine.

I just rolled back to w7 so I could finish the Witcher 3 with my ds4 and I'm not really missing anything from w10. Maybe when some good dx12 stuff comes out.

Upgraded a week ago. So far everything runs great except for one thing: The NVIDIA driver crashes sometimes and a message pops up "Driver has stopped working and has recovered". Newest W10 geforce driver. Hope they fix that soon. Never had that problem under W7.

Getting some weird Explorer.exe errors randomly when shutting down or rebooting. Googled a bit and these should have been fixed by now, but I guess not.
Hopefully they'll fix these in future updates.

Yeah I get this every now and then. Mostly when playing a somewhat-heavily modded Skyrim.

Fortunately, it does actually manage to recover without issue within about 15-30 seconds, but it still needs fixing as soon as possible.

I'd never had the issue with Windows 8.1.

If you delete Windows.old folder after upgrade and choose to keep nothing from the previous installation, is it considered as a clean install?

Interesting to see what is new Memory Management stuff is for Windows 10525. I wonder how new it is or if it has been sitting in the background of previous Windows 10 versions.

Have you OC'd your gpu? This is usually indicative of a too-demanding overclock.

Nope. It's a Windforce OC model but I didn't overclock it. And as I said: It's a W10 problem. Never had the crashes in 2 years with the card under W7.

Status report: Been using W10 on my upstairs PC (some gaming, mostly productivity stuff) and for the most part it's been working fine. Haven't had any of the Nvidia errors with the 770 in this machine. The only problems I'm having are:

1) Poor sound card support - This is Creative Labs fault, but it still works at least, though there is no surround and very little in the way of features. Had to force install the Win8 drivers.

2) Computer won't shut down all the way. When I shut it down, it spins down the drives and turns off the monitors, but it never actually powers down. I have to manually hold down the power button to turn it completely off. I've tried various BIOS setting related fixes I found online but nothing has worked. It's annoying but not a deal-breaker.

What kind of sound card? If it's Creative Sound Blaster series you may have to go find and download the latest Win8 drivers for it. It won't work well but it will work.

This is a permissions issue and can be fixed if you want to research how. You'll basically have to take possession of the drives and make your new W10 user the owner of the drives and files. It may be easier for you to just roll back if you don't want to bother, though.

Sucks seeing so many having problems with Windows 10. Got it running great on my main desktop and one of those intel sticks.

It's to be expected. The PC ecosystem is incredibly varied and complex with all the different hardware and software configurations. Honestly I'm surprised there haven't been more issues and public outcry. Besides, the people having problems are the ones that are going to post the most. As a general rule, if you don't enjoy tinkering with and fixing problems with your computer, it's best to avoid upgrading and just buy a new PC with W10 on it when you are due for your next upgrade.

dang, so I added an extra 8GB of memory to my computer and win 10 became invalidated. I thought only motherboard changes or main windows partition/HDD would revoke the key. :(

So I am back on windows 8.1 with classic shell installed, its not so bad. Just wonder if windows 8.1 will get some of the directx 12 updates?

Wait what? So any hardware changes can invalidate W10 just like that? What about even just GPU upgrades/additions?

IIRC, OEM volume keys like these can apparently get invalidated by RAM changes, but not GPU changes for some bizarre reason.

Wow, well, alright I didn't know that. What about any other hardware changes? I know some people seem to lose their activation too from BIOS upgrading/downgrading. Are there any other things like that that can kill your activation?

I've reverted back to W8.1.

10 was ok, nothing really was gained other than the amount of data tracking I was made aware of and how the notification center is trying to sell their products. Also some games popped up like xbox stuff with this recording thing that I wanted to disable but upon looking it up, you need to make an account, log in, and then you can disable it. I didn't really need it with Shadowplay. Update options are non existent... you can choose whether they warn you to reboot to install their forced installation of whatever they send you.

I can wait until games are forced on W10 with DX12.

what data tracking worries you?

I had the same issue and found out it is connected to Microsoft's so-called "hybrid startup/shutdown", which is on by default. I'm not on my PC right now, but IIRC you should uncheck the option named "enable/turn on fast startup" under power settings.

I've just built a new PC and installed Windows 10 Pro on a USB using Microsoft's creation tool. When I go to boot it up on my new PC, after "starting" the download, it tells me I need to install a media driver before continuing. Does anyone know what to do with this issue? It won't let me do anything else.

Does anyone know if I have Win8 and I install win 10, and then after the period for free win 10 expires, I format the computer, will I still have the option to upgrade on clean win 8 install?
