Upgrade to Windows 10?

Has anyone gotten the Telltale Sam & Max games to work on Windows 10? I want to finish playing Season 2 and hopefully move onto Season 3 but at least in Windows 10, none of the episodes seem to be working. I receive an error stating "SamMax204.exe has stopped working." I tried running as an Administrator and running in various Windows compatibility modes.

I asked in the Telltale Support Center and they advised that they do not support Windows 10 as of yet (which I can't really blame them for, considering), but they gave me advice from what other users have reported. Unfortunately, the advice did not work for me, but I will post it below in case is works for anyone else:

First, please install and run the DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer from the following link to ensure DirectX is updated to the latest version.

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=35

After it has finished running, launch the game and see if it loads as intended. If not, you may need to change the system’s resolution to better match the game’s resolution. Please try the steps in the following article to change your resolution to 1280x720:

http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/4910-screen-resolution-display-change-windows-10-a.html

If this still does not allow the game to launch, you can also try downloading older drivers for your graphics card. Here is what one user reported to us that allowed him to launch the game successfully:

“I decided to try installing some early Windows 8.1 Nvidia drivers (January) instead of any Windows 10 Nvidia drivers and the game seems to work. This would seem to indicate an issue with either the drivers or perhaps DirectX 12 (or perhaps a certain call from the game that DX 12 doesn't like).”

Is anyone else getting random stutters in games after upgrading to Windows 10? I've tried reinstalling my Nvidia drivers but that didn't help.

My friend says his racing games sometimes do that, he has GTX 780.
No idea how to fix them though but really interested if there is a way to fix it too.

DTS Connect/DDL is still not working, this is so fail.
Anyone using a gaming PC to HTR to comfy coach gets pwned.

I got it working on my Sound Blaster X-Fi using Creative's new drivers. The drivers are buggy as hell and I ended up having to reinstall them and reboot several times to get everything working but after that I installed the DDL/DTS add-on and it worked like a champ. I loaded Creative control panel and there the options were. I'm using DTS now.

Good luck.

Just had weird problem that after booting computer Windows/Nvidia didn't detect monitors native resolution (2560x1440), installing newest Nvidia drivers fixed it for now.
Any idea what could have caused that?

Monitor is hooked up with DP-MiniDP.

Whatever you do, don't judge the OS if you haven't done a clean install. It was SUPER laggy when I installed it. A clean install solved all and every issue I had with it.

Hi ! Quick question ;)

The way I understand it - upon upgrade, they have stored your hardware information in their servers and when you reinstall it will recheck and activate fine.

The license is not transferable though (to other hardware), so if you install somewhere else activation will fail.

Well, there are several issues which are still there like the strange rights management when an app requesting an admin privileges is silently booted out of memory or the Securom launcher incompatibility - spent half an hour setting up EfLC yesterday because of that.

My entire OS failed this weekend, bad system config error and when it tried to recover it got an IO error (I think it ended in cE). That error made me think my hard drive or RAM failed, but nope. Reinstalled windows 10 and everything was fine... except it didn't automatically activate using my hardware like it was SUPPOSED to, and as we all know you don't get a windows 10 key when you upgrade. So I called microsoft support, waited for two hours and had them remote control my computer, and they ended up running a program that literally just told me to call a different number to activate my computer now.

I'm downgrading as soon as I get time, fuck this shit.

My plan is to wait until the very last minute to upgrade.

I am perfectly fine with 7 and 8.1 on my 2 computers respectively.

I figure by next year all bugs will be worked out and there will be easy ways to get rid of/opt out of all that MS personal data sharing.

My exact reasoning before I just said "wth" and went for it. Couldn't be happier, everything is faster, smarter and snappier.

thanks microsoft!

I had a Windows 8 pro key and it didn't work when I tried to install Windows 10 directly, but I had no problem in updating it as it was instructed.

Does that mean that if I format my PC in the future I will be stuck on Windows 8? Considering the free update won't last forever...

No. You just use the windows 10 "reset" feature, which you should use again NOW anyway, to have a clean install.

If you've done the upgrade of your activated Win8 to Win10 then you can reinstall Win10 without any key on this PC as much times as you want. Your Win10 upgrade license is tied to your PC h/w configuration.

That's the theory anyway, in practice it can be a bit of pain, mine still hasn't reactivated from the weekend.

Question: i have a MSDNAA Win 7 on my PC and i want to upgrade to Win10 but with a clean install on a new HDD.

i no longer have the key and it's not saved in the registry. is there anything i can do?
if i create the windows 10 iso on my PC does it know that i'm good to go?

or are MSDNAA Win7 not allowed to upgrade?

If your Windows is activated (with a genuine license), you should be able to just upgrade to Windows 10 normally. You don't have to enter a key or anything. Your 'machine' will be registered during the upgrade and you can then do a clean install with a .iso on a USB/DVD.

I'm not 100%, but I'm pretty sure MSDNAA/Dreamspark users are entitled to the upgrade.

Ok, here's a question:

I have Windows 7 Home Premium, activated with a license from 2009. (I still have the activation code). It's eligible for the free Windows 10 upgrade.

At some point I will upgrade my motherboard and CPU and perform a fresh install of Windows, because that's something I do every few years. If I've used the "free upgrade" to Windows 10, will I be able to upgrade my motherboard and CPU and reinstall the free Windows 10 using my Win 7 license?

Just asking that makes me think the answer is "no".

The answer to that is probably no, since the license is tied to the MB & CPU id on Microsoft's side.

But I've heard stories already of the activation system accepting it anyway or reps being willing to move the license, so it might be okay?

I upgraded a windows 7 machine fine from the MSDNAA. But that license was from when the licensing basically said if you graduate you on it. Depending on when you graduated terms my vary. In fact I canged the parts and had to reactivate it.

There are tool to pull the product key if you don't have it like Belarc or ProduKey.

the key is not in the registry, otherwise i would've done that.

i wanted to install windows 10 on a new SSD and keep the old installation just in case / delete it after everything works in win 10.

It should work yes, but if it wouldn't you can just contact Microsoft Support and they will sort it out. You can transfer the upgrade license to a brand new computer if wanted to.

will do.
might just buy a new non student license, they aren't that expensive after all.

I understand I'm in the minority here, but I wouldn't "upgrade".
Too many security concerns and issues on opennes, for how I see it.

Edit: nevermind, didn't notice the date on the first post.

That's surprising as to stay activated I figured it'd need record of the key somewhere.

Also you could always clone the hdd to ssd. Upgrade then wipe and start over. That in turn also allows you to pull any old data needed off of the old hdd. It will add a few writes to SSD but nothing that should appreciably impact it's lifetime.

as with win 8, I think I'll skip win 10. I don't see a single compelling reason to upgrade from win 7.

You are going to be one of those people that we had to pry XP from their cold dead hands aren't you? :p

Like some others I've noticed, I upgraded to 10 but didn't really like it so went back to 7. The news about Quantum Break has me thinking about upgrading again but I'm not sure one game will make me do it. I just don't see any benefit to do so right now. I'm waiting for that killer app that makes me wish I had 10.

My subscription to Norton is expiring. Any good Free Antivirus compatible with Win 10?
So many to choose from.

AVG?
Avast?
Panda?

For me, Windows 10 has worked flawlessly. Some games I haven't able to play are now working. And all my music software works great too(DAW, trackers etc.)

Also sync with my Xbox one/Windows phone/Windows 10 OS works great. Too bad that I seem to be minority when reading through all forums.
