Upgrade to Windows 10?

I set up my start menu but idk. I liked the start menu, I actually liked the start screen, I kinda wish I had the option for both instead of jammed together. It was nice having all my icons and tickers spread out over a full screen.
You can make the live.tile part of the start menu much bigger - might be what you want?

Yeah, I put my OS and steam games on a 1TB samsung 850 EVO, did a fresh install of Windows 7 and I will simply never be able to go back. It's the single biggest performance increase I've ever had with a PC.

I've got another one coming for my PS4, we'll see how that goes.

It won't be as dramatic an improvement on PS4 because apparently the HDD is limited to SATA 2 or USB 3.0 speeds (getting conflicting info on which it is exactly).
Also you may wish to invest in a UPS if you don't already have one because SSDs don't take too kindly to sudden shutdowns compared to rotating HDDs.

Most likely patches.

The performance difference from Win7 -> Win8 -> Win10 is pretty small but it generally has slightly improved. Though, we're talking about <1ms difference so it's something you most likely won't notice unless you compare benchmark numbers before/after.

Only thing I could think is that if you were previously on Win7 and The Witcher takes advantage of DX 11.1 features (which were in Win8.1 and Win10) you may be seeing a boost from that.

But still, a decrease of 5ms on your frame times (taking reshade into account) is pretty good.

Depends on what you compare Win10 to. Compared to Win7 yeah there is a performance boost in some DX11 games - specifically those based on Frostbite3 engine as it is using some features of DX11.2 which is unavailable on Win7. Compared to Win8 - not much has changed in gaming performance of Win10.

Yeah, forgot to mention that my PC was on Win7 previously.
That's good to hear then. I'm planning to replay DA Inquisition soon, and ME Andromeda is coming up later.

That's mean.. I still don't have an SSD :(

You are missing out on something revolutionary. Everyone mentions how much faster they are, but the more important thing is how they make the OS way more responsive and snappy. On a SSD, as soon as you see the Windows desktop, you can start working, while on a HDD, you still have to wait for background loading. Click on your browser, opens instantly and start browsing. File explorer instantly. Photoshop instantly. And, etc. You get the picture.

Even more so when it's an M.2 SSD, but even a mediocre SATA 6Gbps SSD runs circles around the fastest HDD or SSHD.
I'm using a Sandisk Ultra II 480GB in my old Lenovo Brazos laptop and it really breathed new life into it.

Thanks, would either option ignore other partitions besides C? :) I want my stuff to remain ofc.

Yep, as long as you don't touch the other drives in installation process. If you want to be safe, you can just unplug them and plug them in again after the install.

Not sure the PS4 is all that good for SSD though. I've heard they can't properly utilise all the speed. Don't quote me though as I'm no expert.

SSD is one of my favourite upgrades ever. I can remember my old i5 750 build from 2009 was feeling pretty shabby until the day I put an SSD in it. It was like using a completely new computer. I never realised how slow mechanical drives are in comparison. Ever since then I've made sure all my friends and family are using an SSD for their boot drive. I'm actually putting an 850 Pro into my housemates laptop this weekend and when I build a new desktop PC, I will be looking at getting the 950 Pro or something like it.

Although faster speeds are great for SSDs, most people don't seem to realize the the most important thing about them are they provide almost zero seek times which makes everything, including the OS, so much more responsive and snappy.

As for increase SSD speeds, I went from a SSD raid 0 SATA2 setup => raid 0 SATA3 setup => M.2 and didn't notice much difference each time for my daily use because the seek times didn't really improve.

Yeah, it would make a big difference only if you read or write a lot of giant sequential transfers.
Also another thing is that 4 kilobyte reads and writes are much faster on a decent SSD relative to an HDD. Typical HDDs rarely get more than 1MB/sec, whereas SSDs are anywhere from 10 to 20x that.

The one GRIPE I have with W10 is with updates and SLEEP MODE...

Even you have it set so that your computer can NOT be waked by WAKE timers, the scheduled task called "REBOOT" under the 'update orchestrater' windows tasks will still REBOOT the fucking computer for updates while asleep.

I just delete that REBOOT schedule here and there and that seems to do the trick. I leave my computer on SLEEP most of the time when I'm not using it.

It's essentially their way of forcing a reboot on those people that postpone update reboots forever on windows 7. They give you 24 hours to reboot and if you don't they do it for you.

This is rather a Windows problem than an SSD benefit. You can gain performance by using a good defragmenter on a normal hdd on Windows.
Linux distros like Ubuntu do not need SSD that much as they are fast even on sata1 drives. They do not need defrag either. You can start working as soon as the desktop appears also. Notice that I've installed dozens of apps. Windows would have speed problems by then.
Currently the Windows XP partition is as fast as Linux due to lower sys req and less RAM needs.

I wonder if DS3 tool fo controllers and ps2 emulators work fine on Windows 10?

especially DS3 tool/motionjoy cause I never lay with keyboard/mouse.
Yes to both.

Note that DS3 Tool isn't recommended these days; it connects to a ton of webpages every time it runs which is shady and dangerous, and modding DS3 Tool to be fully offline is a pain.
The current DS3 driver these days is ScpToolkit.

I still use offline modded DS3 Tool but only because SCP doesn't support proper button remapping.

Just upgraded my laptop to Windows 10 to see if I like it before going whole hog on my gaming PC.

Has anyone had any issues with Steam Mover and Windows 10? Does everything work fine when you upgrade? I us an SSD and 2 HDDs and swap files between them all with whatever I'm currently playing.

Thanks.

This is a weird question. I have one of my machines running an insider preview a lot of the programs that I use no longer work because MS removed a bunch of SDK's in the latest 14267 build. I don't want to format and start fresh if I can avoid it. Is it possible to install Win10 RTM over a Insider build?

Steam Mover works fine here, but in the event that it shouldn't there are plenty of good alternatives.

Link Shell Extension is the superior way of creating symbolic links (directly via Windows Explorer).

So I had the free upgrade feature awhile back and I've ignored it. Today I was thinking of doing the upgrade only to find that it isn't there anymore. I've even tried downloading the manual upgrade from here but nothing happens when I run the .exe.

I guess I missed my 1yr availability period?

On laptop I picked the upgrade and in the Windows Update it gives me the option to upgrade to W10. I skip it and go with normal OS updates. It stays there forever so I can pick it anytime.

Do you mean the Windows-icon disappeared from your system tray?

Make sure to run the .exe with administrator privileges, and make sure your Windows is updated.

Another silly thing by Microsoft:

I had both Ubuntu, XP and 7 partition. Kept XP, upgraded 7 to 10.
Previously I could select booting into XP or 7 straight from the bootloader (Windows 7 in GRUB).

Now Windows 10 loads and gives me the option to select earlier version of Windows (XP).
But instead of continuing and launch XP, it fully restarts and launches the OS when I select Windows 10 from GRUB.
Could not they include the option straight from the bootloader, before Windows 10 loads?

Also I notice that if I shut down the PC from Windows 10, two of the external USB drives have issues mounting to Ubuntu. I have to launch W10, mount the drives from there, restart and only then will they be recognized in Ubuntu. Did not happen with XP or 7. So I have to shut down from Ubuntu instead.

I don't think you should of the 1 year period isn't up yet!

Try doing as the the above has mentioned hopefully that will work for you. You can also download the latest ISO and license it with your current Windows 7/8.1 key.

I've used it on W10 to move Fallout 4 from my HDD to SSD, no issues.

Switched from W7 to W10, and it was extremely 'choppy' ocasionally, so I returned to W7.

Is it necessary to do a fresh install to experience W10 in its full glory because honestly, I wasn't impressed.

Most notably my performance dropped in every single game.

There's always doubt in upgrades, no doubts involved with fresh. So I always go fresh install.

It's always wise to do a fresh install. I've done both and haven't had a issue with either method, but I always prefer fresh install. Choppy? Did you install the updates and give it a reboot?

The only thing that 'frightens' me when doing fresh install is that I won't be able to setup internet connection. I always feared that so I rarely reinstalled my windows unless really necessary. :(

Instead of a fresh install you can also create a new user account. Windows sets settings to default this way. You can then copy the old desktop folder to the new user folder so as to have the same icons and applications there.

Eg Windows Store worked only when I created a new account.

Download the LAN drivers for your motherboard before doing that. Or use the CD that came with it (if you still have a CD drive).

But I'm pretty sure you won't need it.

So overall would u guys recommend windows 10? I'm using 8.1 and I use my PC strictly for gaming. I'm very new to PC gaming and I also don't have allot of knowledge about PC in general, and I worry about running into issues with my gpu etc. so it's literally just a simple install?

OK, I've finally taken the plunge on my gaming PC. I don't think I'll use any of the new features, and shut off all of the dodgy info tracking stuff.

I missed most the jump lists, but you can enable them by modifying the registry.

Anyone else miss anything from 7/8?
Does anyone actually use any of 10's new features, like Cortana?

Mot of the really useful crap like reset and wifi direct printing are already in 8 but not 7.

Oh an enterprise Windows 10 has some really cool features but a lot of them require System center their overpriced management tool to use.

Oh you can control-v into command prompt now that's nice...

I miss being able to switch laptop power plans directly from the notification tray.

Scrolling inactive windows and multiple desktops are awesome to the point where it's much harder to use a Win7/8 computer these days. It's about time Windows got those features given that Linux had them for a really long time.

If I was to use the media creation tool to make a windows 10 ISO, does anyone know what version w10 would be at?

I'm asking because my tablet is just now doing the november update and it's taking forever. Of course it would be faster on my PC's ssd but it would be nice if the latest ISO has this included.

Looks like it will just be launch version of Windows 10 (Build 10240). You will need to use Windows Update to get Windows 10 Version 1511 (Build 10586).

"The November update was originally available via the MCT tool, but we've decided that future installs should be through Windows Update," says Microsoft. "People can still download Windows 10 using the MCT tool if they wish. The November update will be delivered via Windows Update."

I believe that it was reverted back again at some point once they've fixed whatever issue they've had with it previously. I've just downloaded the tool and it is showing 10.0.10586 as its version:

Ugghhhh I just had a Windows 10 pop up flick on my screen saying that Windows had errored and was going to shutdown in 1 minute. I tried 'cmd.exe' and then 'shutdown -a' but it just kept telling me that "a shut down is under way" or something like that. Motherfucker, one minute isn't enough to save my file. YOU CUNT.

Edit: This is nothing to do with gaming btw, this is just a Win10 thread I have in my subscriptions.

That...doesn't sound normal at all, and sounds more like a virus. What was the error?
edit: nvm I just remembered that's actually a rare but legitimate error.
