I actually know someone who is what I'd call "culturally" conservative, who is on the physically dominant / powerful side. The interesting thing is their mix of views and feelings:
- Wouldn't vote republican now, sees modern republicans as idiots
- Would support some socially liberal stances based on civil rights, like gay marriage
- Extremely economically conservative, lives by the "sweat of a man's brow" philosophy
- Thinks all wealth redistribution is evil and literally against human nature
Funny enough this individual rants about the poor and public assistance all the time, especially on the subject of food stamps. Hates that people can use foodstamps to buy food that is anything other than what he'd consider basic animal subsistence. Their reasoning: everything "good" in life must be justly earned with personal labor only. Happiness is your reward for being a winner and a leader in society. You don't deserve to live well or basically have fun if you didn't earn it within a capitalistic free market structure - which happens to be the most just and fair structure ever invented by man.

From what I recall, I remember him coming into the thread to brag about how he was finally on food stamps.
Again, it has been a while and I don't remember it exactly. There was nothing wrong with him using the food stamps but rather it was his attitude about it and how he presented himself. Just rubbed me the wrong way.
See? If you're on food stamps, you should FEEL BAD and BUY BAD FOOD because you know you're undeserving. It's pretty directly stated.

IMO Foodstamps should be relegated to only being able to be used on nutritionally sound food items and exempt from use on "luxury" goods. (FYI Steak is most definitely a luxury item, as is pizza)
That's purely my opinion though. Also, if you're gonna come into a thread bragging about using foodstamps to procure steak, you deserve the vitriol you get. Also, my humble opinion.
Food stamps should work more like WIC does, not like the "FFA" it is today.

You're mad at tax cheats(ultimately), but you take it out on the people the damned system was designed to help. You can't just let them do what they do, you have to have an opinion because your moral superiority gives you the authority to better know what's right, and that he's doing wrong.
And you have no incentive to re-examine any of that.

When did I say I was going to spend my money on steak? (Not that what I bought is that important) but please point this out. I'm pretty sure I just said I was going to buy meat. Meat which everyone in the thread said that I needed to be eating, and even got on my case when I said I couldn't afford it and was getting all my protein from milk.
I was fucked either way. Don't buy meat because funds are meager--get backlash about not eating right. Get subsidy to buy better food because i'm poor, a subsidy that helps the economy--get backlash too. And again, it's funny that no one was willing to talk about it in private, because then they couldn't get back pats from others. People cared about it only as far as it allowed them to assume a superior posture in front of others.

what you're missing is, his idea, was if more people used that available funding, it would go into local businesses and the economy would do better. The point isn't to save pennies. or "make more" whatever the fuck that means. If you're talking about exit strategies, fine. But what about the present situation? In the short and the long term, it's better if those funds are part of the economic cycle instead of being used as a governmental piggy bank. It's tax payer money, and god forbid you ever need to use it.

This is silly because if you buy a 4$ steak and 5$ jug of milk, or a 2$ steak, 5$ jug of milk, and a 2$ roll of turkey meat, the store still gets 9$ of money anyway. The money has been set aside to be spent already. But I don't expect much from people that have never been on food stamps to understand how food stamps work.
