US sends Poland extradition request for Roman Polanski

The Polish prosecutor-general’s office, responsible for overseeing law enforcement in the country, has received a request from the United States to extradite Roman Polanski.

It marks another attempt by the US to bring Polanski back to the country he fled from in 1978. The film director faced a jail term after he pleaded guilty to having unlawful sex with Samantha Gailey (now Geimer), then aged 13. His plea was part of a bargain that saw other more serious charges, including rape, dropped. Polanski absconded before the sentencing, however, and has lived in France ever since.

However, justice ministry spokesman Mateusz Martyniuk said that the Polish statute of limitations (preventing prosecutions in cases where a number of years have lapsed since the crime) “does not apply to US requests”, meaning that Polanski could yet be sent back to the US. Last year Martyniuk said that the director was free to travel as no extradition request had been made – the director could now potentially see that freedom curtailed. Regarding the new request, Martyniuk acknowledged: “Prosecutors will want to summon Polanski for questioning.”

Seems like the U.S is confident that this time it will be approved by a judge. Will have to wait and see.

Still can't believe someone so famous can rape a 13 year old and just up and bail and not face any charges. Pretty depressing seeing so many fantastic directors signing that petition for him

lets say we throw him in prison.

There is an international child-rape organization happening in our world. Hollywood, EU Parliament members, the church. As long as this starts getting rid of all these fucktards, GREAT.

But one dude, when he was allowed to be who he is by a systemic problem isn't much progress.

As much as he deserves it US prosecutors "being confident" is either act of supreme stupidity or attempt to fake such stupididy. It will never happen.

It's still better than nothing.

Unfortunately, it's likely that nothing will come of this.
Can't believe he's still free after all this time. How has he not been extradited from France? They do have an extradition treaty with the US after all, so why haven't they sent him back when asked?

Unfortunately, he is a French, and France doesn't extradite its own citizens.

how old is he now? I mean, he should pay for what he did and all but is there really a point to get him back for prison if he's like "a foot in the grave" old already? can't we just freeze his assets or something and give it to the victim/donate to those with need then spend money trying to get someone who might not last half a year in prison?

Considering he's been escaping justice for well over 30 years, complaining that you're too old for prison once you finally get caught simply does not fly.

Also, it's not like Polanski is on his death bed.

The guy is still directing films, going to awards ceremonies, festivals, etc.

I'm okay in certain instances with clemency for old age or bad health. In fact, I'm far from "hard on crime". But Polanski really doesn't deserve any leniency or respite. This could have been over decades ago if he didn't flee.

Always wondered, what would happen if some bounty hunters dragged his ass back.
Us judges don't care how someone got to them, so it would be doable, but for the whole ocean thing between the us and France. And they'd be international fugitives in the eu for kidnapping.

The CIA had a program back in the 60's for getting their people out of hot spots called Sky Hook. We could look into that.

Not for the US no. One could make an argument that if he hasn't reoffended then imprisoning him now is just unnecessary vengeance. Though again, not for the US.

Or, it sends the message that no matter when you committed such a heinous crime, you will eventually have to face justice and you will be forced to pay for your crimes.

It's a message that needs to sent, especially with all the historical abuse cases now coming to light.

Every day that he spends failing to pay for his crime is another offense.

Poland has been one of the biggest proponents of stationing US troops and equipment there and one of the most anti-Russian of the NATO states due to history and geographic proximity. It is not unknown for foreign and national security policy to affect extradition requests such as this. I'm not saying it will happen or that it would affect anything foreign policy wise but states in the past have certainly done such things in the past to increase or placate relations.

He's 81 years-old.

I think he's trying to look at the bigger picture. I agree that, he should face justice. Even if it's just ONE person, they should face it.

But he's just saying, there are plenty of molestation/rape cases, that are getting swept under the rug and aren't being dealt with (organizations that are being protected, or not being looked at). So bringing in ONE person, doesn't really do much for the larger problem.

That said, I also agree with the posters in this thread that, him being brought to justice isn't negated. That it shouldn't be ignored, simply because there are larger issues that need to be dealt with.

EDIT: Basically, I don't choose to look at this from the perspective, that it's a waste of time. It's good. It should happen.

the age of consent in Europe is 14 and 15 in a lot of places. you can see why some European countries might not feel sympathy.

I'm curious though. Did he rape her in a sense of actual rape, as in, forceful sex when she said no?

Or is it that he had sex with her, and she consented, but she was just 13?

Are you saying that there exists a group of people in high ranking positions who all work cross borders to rape children? And that this is an organized group, each helping one another?

He drugged her and then anally raped her, against her consent.

What is your point? That because Polanski wont solve child rape we shouldnt fucking bother? Or did you just invent people in your head that were saying getting Polanski solves the entire child rape problem?
